benrmatthews··on Ask HN: Anyone a social entrepreneur, i.e. placing social impact above profit?
I’ve been working for, running and volunteering for social enterprises for 12 years now.

I find that “social enterprise” as a term isn’t really known by anyone outside of the social enterprise bubble, e.g. those running, funding or volunteering for a social enterprise.

The funding structures available to social enterprises seems to be an issue - you can be anything from a private limited company through to a registered charity or anything in between (and don’t get me started on CICs...).

I know a fully for-profit company who claims they are a social enterprise just because their main client base is registered charities.

I also think that the B Corp movement (https://bcorporation.net/) is building a much better brand than the social enterprise movement - and the whole process to becoming a registered B Corp is much more stringent than become a social enterprise, and has the added benefit of helping improve the social impact of organisations that apply to become B Corp registered.

I’m currently building a database of social good organisations in the UK and beyond here: https://goodhere.org/

Would love to see more projects and funders submitted. Email is in profile if you’re interested in discussing more.

Quick and easy to set up and integrate with our site [1]

The floating tab doesn't seem to float though. It sticks to the original screen on load but doesn't move when scrolling down the page - see link for details.

benrmatthews··on Show HN: Pep – Turn Your Website into a Progressive Web App
Kudos for making it so easy. If PWA is the way forward, then services like this will help accelerate adoption.

Will be good to see how this affects / slows down site performance.

On a separate note, how many users know about or bother to “Add to screen”? Can the number of users launching from the home screen be tracked?

benrmatthews··on Life in a City Without Water: Anxious, Exhausting and Sweaty
The Arab Spring and the Syrian war arguably started due to climate change. Crops fail due to extreme weather conditions and farmers migrate to cities. Not enough work or supplies leads to civil unrest. Civil unrest leads to war, which leads to migration to countries with jobs available and more temperate climates. The article doesn’t mention it, but how many of the 5 million living in Chennai have moved to find places that are easier to live in? When will millions start to move out of Chennai if the situation carries on like this?
benrmatthews··on Amazon to employees: Quit your job, we’ll help you start a delivery business
This is known as IR35 in the UK and is currently being implemented in the public sector. Will be enforced in the private sector too shortly, especially if companies like Amazon try to pull of things like this.
benrmatthews··on Ask HN: What are your “brain hacks” that help you manage everyday situations?
Just start. Even spending a few minutes on a problem you've been avoiding will help make the issue clearer, plus you're more likely to keep going once you've started (see also: pomodoro technique).
benrmatthews··on Ask HN: What does your ideal home office look like?
That’s your ideal working environment? Sounds dark and bad for your posture, but whatever works for you.
benrmatthews··on Ask HN: What does your ideal home office look like?
Never thought about a treadmill. Do you use one at the moment? If so, for how long at one time?
benrmatthews··on Ask HN: What does your ideal home office look like?
Thanks - have a “normal” monitor on order but will swap it for a widescreen. Will definitely be trying not to watch movies in the home office, as that could lead to bad habits...
benrmatthews··on Ask HN: What does your ideal home office look like?
I run my own business, so this question wouldn’t be relevant as I can choose what I like (after I’ve spoken to my accountant about what I can and cannot expense).

benrmatthews··on Twitter Soars After Surprise Sales Gain, First Real Profit
Expect it is access to tweet data via the API, e.g. social media listening tools that monitor for trends across Twitter and other platforms.
benrmatthews··on We all think our jobs are safe from automation
There are lots of tools out there that already have automation elements built in (e.g. social media scheduling, programmatic ads). This will only increase as AI gets integrated into the plethora of adtech and martech products.

What will likely happen is that individual marketers will be able to do more with less, so marketing teams may well slim down to individuals who simply coordinate the tech involved.

There are still parts through that need a human touch - such as creative work and translating data into insights/analysis for various stakeholders.

benrmatthews··on We all think our jobs are safe from automation
I work in digital marketing and really think my job will go in the next 10 years due to automation (if not in the next 5 years).

I'm trying to stay a step ahead and work "above the algorithm" - learning skills that will always be needed and can't be automated (creativity, team management, translating analytics into actionable insight).

It's difficult to tell how quickly the need to adapt is and the best way to adapt to automation.

benrmatthews··on How about we stop building apps for refugees and top up their phones instead?
UNHCR already give cash directly to registered refugees:

"For the individual refugee, it also empowers them by giving them the choice over how to meet their most immediate needs. Freed from having to queue or travel to receive one-size-fits-all aid, people can buy their own food, fuel, clothes, medicine or pay the rent based on their personal priorities. In this way, refugees contribute directly to local economies and foster positive relations with host communities."

Thanks, Ben - have emailed.

P.S. Thanks for the bonus cat pic.

benrmatthews··on Show HN: Who Cares? – Professions in the NHS
Search seems to be the biggest issue, so we're going to upgrade that today. Have fixed "radiologist" and "vascular surgeon" for now, but aware there will be plenty of others.

Another comment mentions the short profile of an actual person. It's an interesting idea and one we'll consider adding.

Mapping is coming soon in the form of a care journey / pathway. We have this built in the back end already, but need to spend time doing the mapping before making that public.

Thanks for the feedback, excited to keep working on it!

Patient Opinion has been looking at care experiences for a few years now and does it well: https://www.patientopinion.org.uk/

Who Cares is more focussed on clear and simple explanations of care systems that patients can quickly and easily understand.

benrmatthews··on Show HN: Who Cares? – Professions in the NHS
Thanks - have updated.

We're still adding to and refining the data, but wanted to get the project out there for feedback while we work away in the background.

benrmatthews··on Show HN: Who Cares? – Professions in the NHS
Thanks for the feedback, appreciate it.

Routes into each role is a good idea. We have "pathways" planned, which shows how you might interact with each profession through your care journey (we're focussing on patients for now).

Good catch on the misspelling detection - will look to add in now.
