bennysonething··on Ask HN: Which HN post (or comment) changed your life (or career)
Hi, can you link to John carmack article. I've tried googling and can't find it :)
bennysonething··on Resources for Beginning Graphics Programming
I know nothing about grapgics programming, but this is on my list of things to work through:

bennysonething··on 3dfx: So powerful it’s kind of ridiculous
This wasn't my experience. I bought a voodoo 3 , playing quake 1 and quake 2 was just disappointing, at the time it just felt like Goldeneye was next gen compared to those flagship pc games. I desperately wanted it to be a step up. It didn't feel like it. Also it's sort of odd to me that quake two is seen as revolutionary. In my opinion Goldeneye blows it out of the water and it was released in the same year.

Edit, obviously this is all subjective, and it's about fond memories! :)

bennysonething··on The EU's new Cyber Resilience Act is about to tell us how to code
And who gets to say what these good practices are? Until recently everyone thought Clean Code was a wonderful book full of great coding advice, now we see that it's full of really crap examples.

Does all public code on GitHub need to be audited?

bennysonething··on Nokia launches DIY repairable budget Android phone
How would this compare to a pixel 6a?
bennysonething··on How I learned to program a Commodore 64 in BASIC and compiled C (2020) [video]
https://www.retrogamedev.com/

This guy's book on c64 game Dev is good. I bought it, but I never gave it the time required.

I think he is/was going to do a nes one too.

bennysonething··on U.S. corn-based ethanol worse for the climate than gasoline, study finds
I still don't understand why we're still doing bio fuels. We've known for decades that they are a disaster. Am I missing something, is there evidence to the contrary?

For now I can't see how we can just stop fossil fuels without starving half the world (as we need them for fertilizer production). Never mind cement, plastics and steel.

bennysonething··on Tell HN: Do not store any funds in PayPal or use them for anything critical
Happened to me in 2007, they took 750 GBP from my back account. I complained, it was never explained what happened. They paid the money back to me over a period of about 4 months. It was utterly ridiculous.
bennysonething··on My class required AI
But surely the point of essay writing is to learn how to structure your thoughts into a coherent argument? If students aren't doing this, how will they learn this skill?
bennysonething··on Doom the Way It Was Meant to Be Played – v1.1 Multi-Monitor [video]
Thanks
bennysonething··on Doom the Way It Was Meant to Be Played – v1.1 Multi-Monitor [video]
One other question, if a dos game used TCP/ip, would the developer have to write their own ip stack? Presumably dos didn't provide any of this?
bennysonething··on Doom the Way It Was Meant to Be Played – v1.1 Multi-Monitor [video]
Great response, thank you :)

Googled tsr, terminate and stay resident if anyone else is reading this.

bennysonething··on Sweet Home 3D is a free interior design application
I came here to say the same thing. It's sort of survival horror by capcom, so same lineage as resident evil in a way. Only seven years before it, the jump in technology is mind boggling to me.
bennysonething··on Doom the Way It Was Meant to Be Played – v1.1 Multi-Monitor [video]
Why wasn't the networking in doom just done as TCP/ip (or UDP/IP)?
bennysonething··on Millennials who buy less are happier
True. However on the TV I spent about 300 percent higher than I originally set out to! Probably the only very high end thing I've ever bought though.
bennysonething··on Millennials who buy less are happier
Last time I bought speakers before this was 2007! Last TV was 2013. Previously I'd managed to run a pc made of second hand parts from 2008 to 2017 with no upgrades.

I think you are correct in a way. I do like the TV and sound bar. But also I'm wary of the addictiveness of reading reviews, upselling myself to higher specs and higher price than I'd originally intended. There does seem to be some sort of dopamine hit with researching options.

bennysonething··on Millennials who buy less are happier
You've just described what has been happening to me since becoming a parent. Suddenly consumer electronics matter to me because I'm stuck in the house a lot more. I regret my purchases. But if you can only watch movies in the house then a good TV and sound bar are nice.
bennysonething··on Millennials who buy less are happier
This is exactly what happened to me last year. I used to be pretty frugal. Rarely replaced computers or other consumer electronics. Then I ended up buying a mid range sound bar. A very good oled TV. And a graphics card. Really stupid. It cost me more than mone, it was all the time researching, reading endless reviews. Configuring it all.
bennysonething··on PC CPU Shipments See Steepest Decline in 30 Years
I remember buying a voodoo 3 for 130 GBP. That was pretty high end at the time. Who's the target market for 1k+ cards?!

At one point you could get a decent gaming pc for about 500 or 600 GBP. I doubt that's possible now. And madness compared to the hardware in a Xbox series X. Yes I know it's hardware is subsidized.

bennysonething··on John Carmack goes off about online-only games being abandoned
"The default today may be a distributed mess of spaghetti, but that is a choice."

I'd like to hear more of his thoughts on this. The distributed and service orientated the stuff I work in gets, the less we ship. It's glacial.

bennysonething··on Meta to ask many managers to become individual contributors or leave
I want my career path as a developer to never be anything but individual contributor. I like teaching newer Devs but I don't want to manage them. Maybe I'm being naive?
bennysonething··on Google won't release an AI that can generate music from text descriptions
"won't release it fearing risks". Much further down they explain why: because it can end up reusing samples from sources it was trained on.
bennysonething··on Tell HN: MS forcing Edge shortcut on desktop
I tried switching to ltsc, all was fine for a few months, then I hit an issue with a game (actually I think it was several games). After a long time googling I discovered it wasn't fixable in ltsc. I can't recall exactly what it was, but it was enough for me to switch back to pro (I have a msdn license at work so I have access to whatever windows iso and licenses I want).
bennysonething··on An unexpected benefit of unit tests
The book A philosophy of software design https://www.amazon.co.uk/Philosophy-Software-Design-John-Ous... Points out that TDD can inadvertently lead to tactical design rather than strategic design. In my experience, this can be true. I'd never noticed until it was pointed out.

Im on a team that is currently attempting shift left. One part of this has been an argument that testers should review unit tests. I think this is not a good idea. Unit tests tend not to focus on the behaviour of system as a whole.

bennysonething··on Ask HN: Why aren't there any cars in Nineteen Eighty-Four?
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Soviet-Passport-History-Internal-Ru...

I haven't read it yet, but what you are saying made me think of this. I don't think the travel restrictions within the soviet union are that well known.

bennysonething··on Boris Yeltsin's visit to a suburban Houston supermarket in 1989 (2016)
Would boycotting bananas help or make it worse for people in those countries?
bennysonething··on Boris Yeltsin's visit to a suburban Houston supermarket in 1989 (2016)
You think Americans buying bananas from poorer countries makes those countries poorer?
bennysonething··on There was nothing “wasted” about my youth spent clubbing on ecstasy (2021)
After the first time trying it all I could think about was doing it again. I remember walking home with my friend who was doing it for first time and both of us agreed it was the best thing we'd ever done. We did it again shortly after.
bennysonething··on There was nothing “wasted” about my youth spent clubbing on ecstasy (2021)
David nutt is brilliant. I loved his book drink. However I think that horse riding Vs mdma point is a bit limited. I think there are dangers worth facing as the overall experience probably helps you grow as person, so horse riding has the dangers, the skills, the discipline and the responsibilities that go with it. In my mdma taking years I don't think I met anyone who benefited from it. In fact I know of quite the opposite.

Edit: btw I think all drugs should be decriminalised.

bennysonething··on There was nothing “wasted” about my youth spent clubbing on ecstasy (2021)
Thankfully that effect has been temporary. Yes I remember 5 htp. I used to take it
