benmcnelly··on E-ink wifi display project
I understand your frustration, I too just want access to decently priced, and various sizes of e-ink displays. From my time playing with the little adafruit displays, I also get where Visonect is coming from as a whole stack (hardware, controller, api, software) that makes it easier to just get up and going sounds pretty dang great.

I think what it comes down to for me, is I am not buying a dev kit to get hooked into an ecosystem that I don't have really clear pricing on. Which is really to bad. I think if you had a cheaper wifi only 6" model that people could afford to throw away money on just to test ideas out, then you would get way more people interested.

benmcnelly··on ASCII art diagrams
This is really cool, makes me want to make some sort of spin off that takes emoji art and makes story boards out of it.

Also, here is a cool tool for generating ASCII art diagrams: http://asciiflow.com/

benmcnelly··on Should I continue to work for a company that MITM all my web traffic
I feel like this is on track for most places, an above board explanation of how safe your personal data is. If they are going to assume no personal web access on their systems, or not give that access privacy then you have to evaluate if that is the right environment for you.
benmcnelly··on Ask HN: Buy new Apple hardware given none was announced at WWDC?
I am afraid I am net an expert in AI and OpenCV, but I do know how to build a custom desktop. I would research what hardware other people are finding effective, and then just double check Ubuntu/Debian will have the driver support (its pretty good nowadays) for what you want. Building a rig is a great experience and quite fun too!
benmcnelly··on Ask HN: Why is this shady actor building a JavaScript botnet?
So front.to doesn't see to be changing the JS you upload (yet) but the js file at cookie-consent.org is interesting ( //cdn.front.to/libs/cookieconsent.min.js ) got google analytics in there, and of course could be changed to run whatever at any time... Maybe someone could use that to identify more about this shady actor?

benmcnelly··on E-ink wifi display project
I really want to get my hands on some flexible Color ePaper displays whenever those come out :D
benmcnelly··on Video streaming for all
I would not download and run this software.
benmcnelly··on Did Google Manipulate Search for Hillary? [video]
Who knows, maybe they got cleared because someone was trolling the suggestion engine, just because there is heavy logical correlation that suggest higher rated search terms should be suggested, that doesn't mean there are not other factors that outweigh it. We don't really know how it works.

I am not being defensive of them, in fact it wouldn't surprise me if it was true, just that they got caught. It is actually pretty fascinating and scary how entangled the Google universe and the Government are, and right or wrong, they are seem to be more invested in their vision of the future more than financial* gains.

benmcnelly··on Introducing Nearby: A new way to discover the things around you
"I knew I was missing something in life, turns out it was more notifications."

Constant tracking, the physical web and augmented reality are so interesting yet so not what we really need. Not trying to burst any bubbles, just saying that if anyone is looking to this for inspiration, sure it may be the future of advertising and AI giving us what we need when we "need" it, but is it the future we really want?

benmcnelly··on US Cellular Now a Part of Project Fi's Network
This is great news, as we have quite a bit of coverage by them here (Midwest). I feel like I see a lot of people mention issues with Fi on the web, I must be one of the lucky few that have not only had no issues, but stellar performance all around.
benmcnelly··on Watch_Dogs 2 Launch Page Broken by Same Origin Policy
In other news, the reveal itself was pretty interesting, so thank you for the link, even though that wasn't the intended purpose, I had no idea about it :)
benmcnelly··on “During the investigation we noticed that you placed a shell into our web root”
His argument makes sense to me as to why that was needed, however if they want to take that stance, thats understandable, as is people being less likely to run things down for them.
benmcnelly··on RIAA to .ORG Registry: Take down ThePirateBay
I should have put a winky face beside it indicate I was being coy not serious. I think all comments are interpreted to be super serious. I almost made a comment about just saying something like that putting you on their "list", but I am sure that's silly, they probably don't have lists.

;-)

benmcnelly··on RIAA to .ORG Registry: Take down ThePirateBay
That's a terrible plan, or at the least something you shouldn't post online.
benmcnelly··on RIAA to .ORG Registry: Take down ThePirateBay
Hey did you know that you can go to pirate bay website and find links to content that may not be legal?

^ Am I obviously infringing as well?

benmcnelly··on RIAA to .ORG Registry: Take down ThePirateBay
Anyone else get a cool little "A privacy reminder from Google" link at the top?
benmcnelly··on RIAA to .ORG Registry: Take down ThePirateBay
The argument here as indicated above is much more important than copyright issues.

semi-convoluted analogy time!

I want to start off with a statement of empathy and understanding for people who have their name slandered online when someone reviews their shop/eatery. Now lets say someone comes onto that shops site, and leaves a bitter unsightly comment, I don't think anyone would argue that they are within their right to delete that from their site, as much as they could leave it up and respond to it at their discretion.

Now lets say, that someone comes onto your site, and leaves a comment about this persons shop. your site could be a review site, or just a general discussion site. Either way, when the shop owner comes to you and asks you to remove the comment, you have every right to do so, or to decide not to.

If I see someone come along and FORCE someone (you) to take down a review or comment, I would be very upset about that. I mean, its not my site, but when I see your rights get trampled on, even though I empathize with the trampler, I have to take your side on this.

All this to say, people who take obvious black and white issues and use those to further their agenda do not reserve the right to be unchallenged in process.

We all agree that killing people is terrible, but we don't all agree that abortion is wrong. We all agree that giving to people is great, but we don't all buy into a universal basic income. We all agree copyright protection is there for the artist, and that stealing things is bad, but some people think that the argument of what constitutes data you can control and can't has farther reaching consequences than piracy.

benmcnelly··on Owncloud has been forked into Nextcloud
Yep, if your backup software doesn't have historical snapshots where you can jump back to a certain day, you are just going to write bad data as your backup and only have bad data to restore.
