benjymo··on Finland will seek NATO membership immediately
Hungary would be the only I can think of that might veto but they already said they wouldn't.
benjymo··on iPhone factory workers say they haven’t been paid, cause millions in damages
But you can use your existing charging cable.

But apples cables are notorious for breaking easily.

But I have been using the same cable since X years and it's working fine.

benjymo··on Sweden Says Controversial Covid-19 Strategy Is Proving Effective
The strategy isn't even that different from e.g. Germany or Austria (I use these countries because I've been following them more closely).

Yes Germany and Austria closed more shops at the beginning to stop exponential growth. Now they start to slowly open stores again with the goal to not overwhelm the health care system.

I think almost no country tries to go for zero infections, only to spread the infections out over a longer period. No infections would also seems a bit unrealistic for most countries.

benjymo··on Apple changes default MacBook charging behavior to improve battery health
iOs warns if the battery is at 20% and at 10% with a button to enable low power mode.
benjymo··on Pollution from tire wear is worse than exhaust emissions?
I don't think the argument was to remove all car lanes and replace them with bike lanes.
benjymo··on Banning facial recognition is missing the point
In Austria it's illegal to wear a face mask if it's not cold enough or for special cultural activities that are "tradition" thanks to the last right wing - far right government.
benjymo··on 16-inch MacBook Pro
Yes you can have buttons to change volume and brightness. In fact the icons next to the slider are buttons you can tap to lower/increase volume/brightness. Or you can configure them to always show up as buttons without slider.
benjymo··on 16-inch MacBook Pro
"Keys" on the touch bar are more dynamic. Buttons can have different width, you can show text, sliders for e.g. volume. It's not a 1-to-1 mapping.
benjymo··on 16-inch MacBook Pro
I may be in the minorty and like the touch bar.

Intellij, Outlook and Apple's own programs integrate it very well.

Phyisical keys are great but 12 buttons labelled F1 to F12 with different functions depending on the program also isn't he pinnacle of UX.

benjymo··on Mac OS Catalina: more trouble than it’s worth
I don't use it often but on Linux I found https://www.darktable.org/ great. They also have a Mac Version. Maybe something worth looking into.
benjymo··on Dear Email Industry, We’ve Got a GDPR Problem
At least Thunderbird and Outlook on Mac block images by default and you can whitelist people from your address book.
benjymo··on Ask HN: Best ways to spend money towards climate efforts
I've recently heard about The Generation Forest[1]. They plant trees for harvesting in a sustainable way. Different trees that produce wood in 20 to 100 years and you get some returns when they are harvested.

benjymo··on ESA satellite dodges 'mega constellation'
According to the other article I read about it (https://www.forbes.com/sites/jonathanocallaghan/2019/09/02/s...) they knew about it earlier but Starlink refused to move their satelite.
benjymo··on Cost of owning a BMW i3
Do people in the US really drive to through the country that often? I guess people drive maybe 2000-3000 km a year for holidays, e.g. to skiing resorts in winter or to Italy in summer, but even that isn't average.

I'd say most of the drives are commutes to work and shopping.

benjymo··on North American versus European distribution systems (2011)
For my relatively cheap Ikea stove, each cooking plate of my induction stove uses around 1.5 to 2 kW with "Booster" to 2.5 and 3.5 kW. It's connected to three phases and ground through three separate fuses.

The oven is separate and connected with a standard plug though.

benjymo··on Amazon fires: Record number burning in Brazil rainforest
Co2
benjymo··on Apple expected to adopt keyboard with scissor mechanism for 16-inch MacBook Pro
I'm a programmer and I like the touch bar. Intellij integrates it quite nicely, I can add terminal commands if I'm in the terminal, switching between email and calendar in Outlook also works well.

Sure it also has downsides but generic "F1" to "F12" buttons also isn't the pinnacle of UX.

benjymo··on Berkeley first city in California to ban natural gas in new buildings
AFAIK it's not ideal but possible to use existing radiators.

My parents recently added an air heatpump to their existing (wood) heating system without changing radiators. They Installed a new boiler (water tank, not sure about the translation) where the top half is heated by the heat pump and they can optionally heat the whole tank using the old wood heater.

benjymo··on Which has more sales: a single long checkout form or a multi-step one?
Amazon was particularity bad for my location.

For Austria they use the German shop, but Germany has different VAT and a lot of sellers don't ship to Austria.

When ordering it didn't show how much it cost and if shipping is possible at all.

benjymo··on Slack Is Going Public at a $16B Valuation
I know people like that but they also write emails and then come over to tell me that they've send me and email.
benjymo··on Ireland to ban new petrol and diesel vehicles from 2030
Around here, quite a few employers also provide charging stations at work.
benjymo··on I rode all the e-scooters, and most of them are awful except two
Yes, in Germany e-scooters are legal to drive on bike paths and streets this week. You have to have insurance though, there is a max. speed of 20km/h and it needs lights and everything.

But if these scooters fit the requirements, they seem similar enough to bikes to allow them to drive on bike paths and streets.

benjymo··on Google AMP Issue: Links to visit the site currently not working
Unfortunately, Google can rank by whatever criteria they want and we are forced to implement it. And it isn't always in the best interest of the end user.

E.g. at a company we had to add "useless" content on our shop pages, otherwise google ranked the pages lower due to having not enough content.

benjymo··on U.S. blacklists Huawei
I have the same experience. The hardware is nice for the price but it's loaded with crappy apps.

Some of them are badly translated, updates to a simple calender app suddenly requires ridiculous permissions.

And worst of all, enabling USB debugging test apps through Android Studio requires a Mi Account. Maybe I'm paranoid but I can't think of a reason other than corporate espionage.

benjymo··on CO2 in the atmosphere just exceeded 415ppm for the first time in human history
I have dominion over my flat but that doesn't mean I'll just shit into the corner. Quite the opposite actually.
benjymo··on Kotlin is now Google’s preferred language for Android app development
I don't think they should be rewritten in Kotlin. That would force everyone to use Kotlin with minimal benefits for Kotlin users.
benjymo··on New Skype for Web is live for Edge and Chrome browsers
On Chromium, Skype loads but clicking "Join call" does nothing.
