benjohnson··on U.S. to give ransomware hacks similar priority as terrorism, official says
Backups are no longer sufficient - as the hackers now threaten to disclose stolen data to the public.
benjohnson··on Daily Mail Published Nude Photos of Katie Hill. Now She Has to Pay Them $100k
Generally - heterosexual men are attached to the female form. This attraction could very well have a biological component in that a species needs children to continue.

Given these predicates, it's natural to expect that heterosexual men are more likely to be attracted to two females (twice the female forms) and not two men (no female forms).

benjohnson··on Toyota launches groundbreaking 10-year warranty (in UK)
It's fair to say GM did copy it well in the Saturn experiment, but failed to bring it fully to the whole company. VW can't help themselves from making complicated things. Honda is onboard, but Nissan still thinks in terms of supply side and will churn out garbage to meet next quarter targets.

That being said, Tesla went back to early Ford for the full top-down flow system - and it's working for them. So while I love the TPS system and use it in my company, I'm willing to keep on learning.

benjohnson··on Toyota launches groundbreaking 10-year warranty (in UK)
I kid you not - Porsche copied Toyota and the Toyota Production System for good effect.

benjohnson··on What a Wuhan lab leak would mean
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/search/research-news/9563/

Frankly, it was probably good research. If it did escape, it's not a particular China problem - viruses have escaped labs over and over all over the world.

I know of one lab here in the US that has a onsite fourteen day quarantine every time you leave the work area - you can imagine that it's not a popular place to work.

benjohnson··on What a Wuhan lab leak would mean
Nothing.

Because we Americans funded the lab. So the combined propaganda power of both the CCP and the USA will make this a non-issue.

Everybody is also going to think I'm nuts - but we should be very very thankful that the first airplane tranported pandemic was so mild.

It's prepared us for something that could be vastly worse.

benjohnson··on Educated voters’ leftward shift is surprisingly old and international
Das Capital should be read by everybody - after they turn 40 and have some experience.

In my opinion, it's a dangerous read, because it will turn you into a fire breathing totalitarian if you don't see the subtle flaws in it.

benjohnson··on A look behind the “White Men as Full Diversity Partners” re-education program
Perhaps 'pride' isn't a long-term useful label. I have chosen 'appreciation' for my ancestors that worked hard and contributed to our civilization.

Once viewed though that lens, you being to see kindred spirits in a lot of other races and cultures. For me, it came to a growing realization that as a white male, I often have much more in common with a new immigrant than I do with a trust-fund white kid that burning the downtown.

benjohnson··on Vietnam War images from the North Vietnamese side
Yes, Vietnam is awesome - and there's a lot of capitalism going on even if it's not official.

But it's also no South Korea or Taiwan as far as development.

The Vietnamese people are smart, clever, hard-working, and I really do appreciate them and I hope their government gets out of their way so they can shine.

benjohnson··on How Well Can You Hear Audio Quality? (2015)
As I understand it from the context - if you make yourself able to find flaws, you'll constantly find them, or think you have found them.

If it's something you love, it may make it your enjoyment a bit less.

For me, it's why I don't watch my wife pop zits in the bathroom. It's nice to not know about those flaws. :)

benjohnson··on Cheese photo leads to Liverpool drug dealer's downfall
As I understand it, the Bill of Rights was considered redundant by many people - and some thought that enumerating the rights line by line was dangerously limiting them.
benjohnson··on Tosh: Changing your SSH server's listen address every 30 seconds based on TOTP
It's another layer of security. There have been exploits of OpenSSH in past so this may be prudent.
benjohnson··on San Francisco’s Shoplifting Surge
It's happening here where I live - we have a locally owned grocery store has had to reduce hours, post a guard, and now is considering closing because of rampant shoplifting.
benjohnson··on China increases spending 500% to influence America
It's been going on for a long time however - 1996 is a good example of the CCP influencing American politics.

benjohnson··on Few realistic scenarios left to limit global warming to 1.5°C
There's a lot of room for hope - I don't really care* global warming, and I'm getting solar on the house in five years because it's disturbingly cheap and will be driving an electric car because they're less maintenance.

There's going to be a lot of moving away from oil - because refining sludge from the ground and transporting is expensive compared to the competition.

Also... there's a heck of a lot of Nuclear Fusion research going on where I live. I wish them well!

*I do care, but it's in the abstract. I kinda like not living in an ice-age. Normally, the land where my house sits is under 1.5 miles of ice.

benjohnson··on Texas lawmakers approve bill banning 'meat' & 'beef' on plant-based food labels
And to add a bit of history - meat is also used for nut-meat.
benjohnson··on By eating them, hyenas gathered 9 Neanderthal skeletons in one cave
Weird bit: Hyenas are genetically felines, but behave more like dogs than the cats we're used to.
benjohnson··on Texas lawmakers approve bill banning 'meat' & 'beef' on plant-based food labels
For culinary use, Tomatoes are a fruit. That may differ from the biological definition but that's ok.
benjohnson··on The Oncoming Ransomware Storm
6. Put and end to our data hording. Turns out I don't need to keep all the data we have because it's now a liability.
benjohnson··on The global chip shortage is starting to have consequences
The same reasons usually apply to large BMW and Mercedes SUVs. The correct people own those so they don't attract the same Attention.
benjohnson··on New technology has enabled cyber-crime on an industrial scale
Used to be. Now they grab a copy of the data and threaten you with divulging it. That can be a huge problem.
benjohnson··on Restaurant menu tricks (2020)
Agreed! This quote from Noel Coward springs to mind:

"I'll go through life either first class or third, but never in second."

benjohnson··on Over 96% of Apple Users Have Blocked Facebook from Tracking Them
I have ideas that were considered mainstream ten years ago, but are now verboten and only shared in private.
benjohnson··on The Byte Order Fiasco
With a bonus of some being EBCDIC too.
benjohnson··on Warren Buffett is right, inflation is running rampant
There is some weird inflation going on over the last decade here in the US. The price of the "basket of goods and services" in total has remained relatively constant - but the university student that needs housing and has heart attack would do well to search out a time-machine.
benjohnson··on Ask HN: How to deal with managers who set a hard time-limit on fixing a bug?
As a manager - I've had to do crap like this now and then to light a fire under people. It can be done to indicate extreme urgency. There also are real-world implications to some delays - for example not being able to run payroll is a legal nightmare and an ethical nightmare for hurting your employees.

Generally, when I've had to do this, it's been my fault for not manangeing properly.

benjohnson··on How Basecamp Blew Up
A few hundred-thousand dead Kulaks is a good example. Killed because they were just above the peasantry.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dekulakization

benjohnson··on How Basecamp Blew Up
Thankfully it doesn't happen at all or we have a genocide for every comedian.
benjohnson··on Why is India having a Covid-19 surge?
Thank you for reiterating and expounding on the details of the problem of a open border when it comes to pandemics.
benjohnson··on Why is India having a Covid-19 surge?
Either way - an open border is rotten for pandemic containment.
