benjamta··on Amazon to deliver by drone? Don't believe the hype
Which does make me wonder how much better this plan would be than using, say, motorcycle couriers.

If the story had been - 'Amazon to deploy motor bikes to deliver packages within 10 miles of their distribution centre' it'd have received a lot less attention.

Packages are routinely delivered quickly, accurately, securely and cheaply in urban areas. I do think Amazon are solving a problem that doesn't exist. Nice bit of PR though.

benjamta··on Heirloom Chemistry Set
Wow - I love this, love both the aims of this project and the look of the finished product. Fantastic stuff!

Can't wait to see one of these recreated next:

benjamta··on TuProlog: Making Prolog Ubiquitous
We use Prolog extensively at RainBird - I could definitely be considered a fan!

As always it's about using the right tool for the job. Prolog is a great choice for many symbolic type problems. We use it as the basis of our knowledge representation and inference platform.

Prolog is often considered too slow for production use. Again this depends on how you're using it, use it for solving the right kind of problems and it's quick. Very quick. Using multithreaded SWI-Prolog and it's C++ foreign language interface we're able to reason over large data sets with hundreds of thousands of concepts very quickly indeed.

Another common misconception is that you need to be a logician with a background in formal logic to work with Prolog. You don't. You need to get your head round declarative programming, which can take a while if you're not used to it. It's worth the effort though, even just so you've got a new technique for your toolbox.

benjamta··on Mavericks – power use / service battery
Since I upgraded to Mavericks I've been watching battery life (hoping for an improvement) and it does feel like it's draining quicker now.

But in reality I'm sure this is just because I'm watching it more closely than I ever did before. I have no quantitive measure of how battery life has changed for me.

I suspect this is a common problem when you announce that an upgrade improves something like battery life. All of a sudden users start looking when they didn't really look before and report issues based on feelings.

Of course this doesn't apply so much for users who're now reporting 'service battery' warnings on new batteries...

benjamta··on Here's how I deal with users who steal
Really like this approach - fascinated to know how this works out over time.
benjamta··on Why don't more developers use LaTeX?
Agreed - Sphinx is great, especially if you're working in Python. Markdown's perfect for lots of situations too, especially for collaborative document authoring on wikis etc.

I still see lots of developers writing documentation in things like Google Docs, especially business or customer focused documents - places where longer structured documentation is required.

There always seems to be more time than is necessary spent on style and layout when using these tools. Google docs doesn't even support creation of table of contents with page numbers.

benjamta··on The shittiest project I ever worked on
So true. Before leaving to focus on more interesting things I've spent a chunk of my career working developing software services for some big insurers. This tale from 1995 could easily be a story of the challenges we faced in 2012/13.

Data managed in spreadsheets, layer upon layer of disconnected management, no engagement with users, very little willingness to understand software development. More spreadsheets...

benjamta··on Avatars.io
Absolutely agree - that Gravatar now requires a Wordpress account is a really shame. avatar.io should be capitalising on this, focusing on why a user would want use their service, not just developers.
benjamta··on Go Pro on a soaring eagle [video]
Fantastic - quite some speed it's got there.
benjamta··on GitHub announces 3D File Diffs
No sure really - thinking off the top of my head something along the lines of the Tilt FireFox extension could be cool.

Not sure how this would work in practise, or even if it'd be useful to be honest...

benjamta··on GitHub announces 3D File Diffs
me too. so whoes up for implementing a funky 3D tool for normal file diffs ;-)
benjamta··on Startup Pitch Competitions have tricked Founders into sharing all their secrets.
Quite agree - it's all about execution.

Other people want to come and do what we're doing? Well that's just great, it validates our market. We just need to make sure we're doing it better than you.

benjamta··on On Lisp: Happy 20th Birthday
Goodness, that makes me feel old. I remember On Lisp very fondly.
benjamta··on Online LaTex editor
We use LaTeX a lot for all kinds of documentation. I've used sharelatex.com on and off for a while now.

I think they'll be onto a winner when they've got their up coming Git access feature sorted out.

benjamta··on Anxiety over the new Gmail Compose
I do quite like the new compose - I get a bit annoyed by the in line editor when you reply though. Feels a little inconsistent.
