bengunnink··on SecureCRT
I mean, it _is_ a really nice SSH/&c client.
bengunnink··on 1874 kid's game is shockingly racist. I Googled – it's legit
"It boggles my mind to think this game even exists"

Does it, though? Remember that this was only a couple of decades after half the country was willing to kill the other half or die trying to keep black people enslaved.

Underestimating the viciousness and stupidity of people will always leave you surprised and disappointed.

bengunnink··on 'Don't Weigh Me' cards aim to reduce stress at the doctor's office
Or... maybe don't tell your doctor how to do his or her job.
bengunnink··on Multivitamin, mineral supplement linked to less-severe illness symptoms
Surprise! An institute named after a megadose vitamin-C whackadoodle is pushing the idea that large doses vitamin C reduces illness duration. I'm shocked.

I mean, it's possible, but what a junk study.

bengunnink··on Ask HN: Why Netflix still using AWS when Amazon is their biggest competitor?
The answer to your question is "Because it makes business sense to do so". Whether you can understand their reasons or not, the best indicator that Netflix has good reasons to use AWS is that it continues to do so. And that will be true until the (possible) day that it doesn't anymore.

> I think the answer is Yes.

So what you're saying is that (1) Netflix is already secretly planning to move away from AWS, in which case your question is moot, or (2) everyone involved in platform decisions at Netflix is an idiot that can't do math.

bengunnink··on Adam Andrzejewski – The Depth of the Swamp
The wastefulness of large bureaucracies has been a running joke for decades now, whether fair or not. That being said, I don't think you're going to find that Hacker News is a good forum for espousing your fiscal conservatism--especially when its couched in some particularly divisive contemporary tropes (e.g., "swamp"). Perhaps you're looking for https://reddit.com/politics ?
bengunnink··on Ask HN: Why is mithril.js not popular?
Rephrase the question: "Why should mithril.js be popular?"
bengunnink··on “long term dating/marriage/having kids with men ‘isn’t worth it’”
Any idea whose premise begins with "[Group] is the enemy" is pretty much guaranteed to be stupid at best, dangerous at worst (I say this more about the comments than the initial tweet).
bengunnink··on Ask HN: I think I want a divorce
A marriage counselor is someone who is trained in dealing with your particular problem.

Would you walk into, say, a car dealership and ask for programming advice? Or would you talk to someone who programs for a living?

bengunnink··on Ask HN: I think I want a divorce
Don't ask the peanut gallery. Go see a marriage counselor.
bengunnink··on Does this kind of design have a name?()
They remind me of Material: https://material.io/design/
bengunnink··on Ask HN: Should Rust be displacing Java and C# in enterprise domain?
Why would it?
bengunnink··on Oracle removed JRE 10.0.2 download and released a broken Java 10.0.99 update
https://adoptopenjdk.net/releases.html#x64_mac

https://jdk.java.net/11/

Don't bother with Oracle's builds anymore.

bengunnink··on Could KGB Archiver Be the Best Compression Tool Available? Or Just the Slowest?
A 5-year-old article about program that's been abandoned for over a decade.

The only resource you need for compression comparison is http://mattmahoney.net/dc/text.html

The author of that website, incidentally, started the PAQ algorithm that KGB archiver uses.

bengunnink··on Men, Please Brush Your Teeth
Is this really a thing? How do these people find partners?
bengunnink··on Ask HN: Primary key based on high-resolution timestamp
The only problem is it's guaranteed to fail for any non-trivial workload.
bengunnink··on Will Speech Syntax Markup Language (SSML) Become the New HTML?
So, an XML-like language is the future of XML-like HTML?
bengunnink··on Evolving the Dropbox Brand
Is godawful rainbow design the new thing now? First Mozilla, and now Dropbox?
bengunnink··on Ask HN: Why isn't there an AES512 or AES1024
https://crypto.stackexchange.com/questions/20253/why-we-cant...
bengunnink··on Ask HN: Why can't I write a int literal like 2,333?
Recent Java versions did something similar, allowing underscore characters, e.g., 7_000_000.
bengunnink··on Amazon Prime’s latest perk is a new Rewards Visa Card with 5% back
It's not really an annual fee, though. You're paying for a product with Amazon prime -- besides free movies, photos, shipping, etc, you can now get a special card with no annual fee _just for having it_.
bengunnink··on Ask HN: Ramen Profitable?
Many noodles used in ramen are simply made of wheat, which is a simple carbohydrate. Beans/legumes are a good source of protein (among other things).

If you use real yakisoba noodles that are made from buckwheat flour, it has the advantage of decent fiber and protein (a complete protein, like soy), but not as many vitamins as beans.

bengunnink··on Ask HN: Ramen Profitable?
Real ramen is good (e.g., https://imgur.com/gallery/KkLvG). The packaged stuff you buy from the store is pretty much guaranteed to be awful for you.
bengunnink··on Chrome has removed the “Simplify Page” print option
Companies make products to make money. As the saying goes, if you're not paying them, you're the product.
bengunnink··on Ask HN: Why is Google so bad at UI Design?
Why are you assuming that everyone agrees with you? Maybe we reject your premise.
bengunnink··on ACH File Parser
Parser? Or viewer? http://sourceforge.net/projects/achviewer/
bengunnink··on Alain Badiou Is Making a Movie About Plato with Brad Pitt and Sean Connery
Um, no, he's not. He's writing a screenplay and dreaming about a cast that will never happen.
bengunnink··on GitHub now using Helvetica Neue. But why?
Preferred Sans-Serif font of the guys who did Bootstrap, who are now working for Github (or at least Mark Dotto is).
bengunnink··on Ask HN: Cloudfare, why use it?
Strictly speaking, size and distribution. You only mentioned DNS, but it's worth noting that CloudFlare isn't just a DNS provider; it's also basically a big CDN, or actually more like a great big proxy server.

(Note: I've never actually used CF, so this is all simply my understanding).

bengunnink··on Some commits from OpenBSD's OpenSSL rampage
CVS? Really?
