benfrancom··on Ask HN: Tools you have made for yourself?
A window sill-desk/laptop stand. I could place my laptop on this and look out the window at the same time whilst working. At the place I used to work we had some awesome views of the mountains, especially on the upper floors. I couldn’t stand staring at cubicle walls, so I would take breaks to walk around and see the amazing views. Eventually, I made the sweet desk. I could have my laptop on top with a wireless keyboard, or put the laptop below. I cut it to the dimensions of my height and where I like to rest my hands. There were some silicone strips/bumpers underneath to keep it from slipping or sliding or scratching the wall. Pics: https://photos.app.goo.gl/VJLQqUhzHjPt4uCB8

benfrancom··on Ask HN: What diagrams do you use in software development?
Architecture and Data flow diagrams. Usually I sketch it out on paper and transcribe it to Lucidchart. Recently, I had to troubleshoot connectivity issues in Amazon RDS in a private subnet with AWS Data Migration Service. This was a regulated environment with heightened isolation. I was only able to figure out the problem once it was on paper and could see it visually with the various Security Groups described.

Fat tire bikes work great in the snow.
benfrancom··on Apple is sued for telling you that you're “buying” movies
If you bought Apple's MP3's when they had DRM, you can't get them without it. (Maybe if you re-purchase it?). At least I can't access DRM free music that I purchased initially with DRM.
benfrancom··on I hope work from home continues
Interesting...I'm not a fan of read receipts and typing indicators for messaging applications for reasons like this. If I need to craft a lengthy reply, it could take a day depending on the schedule. If someone never replies though when it is the de-facto-company messaging platform, that is highly problematic. A coworker even mentioned how anxiety-inducing typing a lengthy reply is that involves some lengthier research.

Thanks for the tool! Will it be integrated into ScoutSuite or remain a stand-alone tool?
benfrancom··on I, Backpack
I had a similar issue with Kelty. My old one from the late 90s lasted 20 years and had amazing craftsmanship. I use my backpack every day for commuting on bike in all sorts of weather. The old one was amazing, with thick nylon and robust zippers and straps.

The same model from 2016 only lasted me a few years before it failed. It was super thin with these weenie zippers, and obnoxious doodads.

I bought a new Vertx backpack a few months ago, and the craftsmanship looks great and is working well so far.

benfrancom··on E-bikes could be the electric revolution cities need
Agree...I've been regular-biking year round in SLC for about 9 years. Rain isn't a problem with good gear, and fenders. Snow gets removed or melts quickly. It's the air quality on days with inversions that are the issue for me. I've biked in single digits, and you are quite warm when you push it.

You could also use a regular bike by moving closer to work. I've been biking for nearly 9 years to work, church, dentist, and the dr's office. They are all within a 3 mile radius. It's highly addictive, and a great form of exercise.

It's my understanding that the toxins produced from mining the minerals for batteries, and recycling them isn't great for the environment.

I'm still interested in an e-bike though, or adding a motor to a bike for the days where everyone else's pollution causes an inversion, and I can't breathe too well.

benfrancom··on Why the Amazon Basics Keyboard Is My Favorite Keyboard
I had rsi as well, so bad I couldn't shake anyone's hand. I thought my wrist was broken. What fixed it for me was to drop the keyboard down onto my lap using a lapdesk. It took me forever to find this out, and there is research behind the ergonomics:

In my opionion, it's worth a good read-through. I also switched to an Evoluent vertical mouse and a Goldtouch split/angled keyboard w/o the numeric pad to minimize back-and-forth. Now I use lapdesk+apple magic keyboard+Evoluent vertical mouse, and don't really have any problems.
