benbristow··on Sshfs Is Orphaned
Used sshfs a lot at a previous workplace that had us do all development on a remote (very out of date) Debian box as there was no way of running the codebase locally. Don't even ask.

Great tool though, Sublime Text worked great alongside it and allowed me to be somewhat productive.

benbristow··on Japan's NTT to begin remote work as norm for 30k employees
> forced participation in dangerous binge drinking

In the UK we just voluntarily participate in dangerous binge drinking

benbristow··on Despite best efforts .NET is still not an open platform
SOAP isn't actually that bad if you use it with a typed language like C#. It's hell trying to use it with something like Ruby/Python though - I remember struggling to talk to a SOAP API with Ruby and getting into headaches that my data was being rejected until I realised that the XML properties had to be in the exact order unlike JSON which doesn't care usually.

Import a WSDL into Visual Studio and you've got your client code automatically generated & documented (if the API was written properly), works pretty nicely to be fair. Even easier than using something like Nswag to generate JSON clients from Swagger/OpenAPI specs.

benbristow··on Ask HN: Simple video editor for instructional videos
OBS doesn't really do editing, it's designed for live streaming/events (hence Open Broadcaster Software (OBS)) but also handles 'VOD' (video on-demand) recording. You can do cuts on the fly as you record by configuring different scenes and using hotkeys but there's no timeline feature or post-editing features.

Camtasia is basically a NLE (Non-linear (video) editor) which has a screen recorder/A/V external capture function bundled though and can be used for splicing audio/video, adding basic effects/transitions and titles etc.

I suggested OBS if using OpenShot (which is also a NLE) as it's good for capturing screen/external video (capture card/webcam etc.)/audio content which then can be post-edited using OpenShot.

benbristow··on Ask HN: Simple video editor for instructional videos
If you're okay with a paid solution Camtasia is probably the gold standard for tutorial/instructional videos, especially screencasts.

For something free, I've had success with OpenShot and used it for show & tells at work on a work machine that I didn't have a licence to use anything more 'professional' with but be prepared to finnick about with it, but for your simple use case it should do the trick. You can use OBS (https://obsproject.com/) or ShareX (https://getsharex.com/) as free tools to capture the screen and/or your webcam.

benbristow··on Netflix cracks down on password sharing, but early efforts in Peru are a mess
Same. I usually watch Netflix on my computer anyway so I can watch any big exclusives via ‘alternative’ means if I wish.

It’s my parents that get value out of the TV apps.

Only other useful feature is being able to save shows on my phone to watch when travelling when there’s limited WiFi/Data but even that isn’t much of a problem anymore.

benbristow··on Rustdesk – Remote desktop software, an open source TeamViewer alternative
Looks neat.

The cynical side of me wonders when the scammers are going to set-up their own servers for this though and start using it instead of AnyDe(x/sk)/TeamViewer. No way of being reported then other than the IP to the server host themselves.

benbristow··on Effective altruism and the current funding situation
Especially as they've just lost the FIFA licence, renaming the next football (soccer) games to "EA FC" as FIFA were asking for a billion for the licence to use their name.

benbristow··on Feeling uncomfortable when leaving phone at home shouldn't be normal
I was on holiday once with my friends in Amsterdam. After a few too many drinks and committing a sin and having a wee in the canal (sorry! When a man's gotta go he's gotta go - as an aside what's it with bars, clubs & fast food chains there etc. charging to use the toilet?!) a guy came up to me and started talking to me, can't really remember what he said to me, all I remember is checking my pocket and my new OnePlus 3t phone had disappeared. Karma I suppose.

We had another leg of the holiday in Finland (Helsinki) and then back to Amsterdam again for another day before returning to the UK. It was painful where all my friends had their phones and could take pictures etc. and I couldn't.

I couldn't even borrow a friend's phone to check emails/Facebook etc. as I'm security conscious and have 2FA enabled on all my accounts, and use a password manager with generated passwords also. My less technically inclined friends called me an idiot.

Thankfully when I got back to the UK I was able to get a replacement SIM card the next day from the network provider's store and I had an older Android phone to use for the time being and was able to go through the Authy SMS recovery process to get my 2FA codes back.

benbristow··on Web scraping via JavaScript runtime heap snapshots
Exactly my thoughts - the author is using it 'in production' - speaking out loud to a forum where Facebook/Meta employees (and other Silicon Valley folk) are definitely observing is a rookie mistake
benbristow··on Show HN: Caddy v2.5.0
Not a secret now haha!

I used to use this https://github.com/nginx-proxy/nginx-proxy (used to be under jwilder's GitHub account) which was also a good tool, and then used behind CloudFlare for free SSL certificates, but the Caddy container with automatic LetsEncrypt is fantastic also.

benbristow··on Show HN: Caddy v2.5.0
I've been using this Docker image in a Docker Compose configuration to run some apps on a VPS

https://github.com/lucaslorentz/caddy-docker-proxy

Pretty nice, handles routing to your containers and manages LetsEncrypt for you. Response times are super fast too (<= 100ms for an ASP Web API application which uses Postgres via Entity Framework).

benbristow··on Hackers claim to have breached Okta systems
A surprising amount of people, probably.
benbristow··on Speed boost achievement unlocked on Docker Desktop 4.6 for Mac
The bait-and-switch, providing it for free then suddenly taking it away.
benbristow··on Speed boost achievement unlocked on Docker Desktop 4.6 for Mac
I don't know to be honest. Wasn't my decision (in-fact I campaigned against it). Probably just to say "we're using Docker" on the job spec.
benbristow··on Speed boost achievement unlocked on Docker Desktop 4.6 for Mac
Shame you started charging for commercial entities. We've all uninstalled Docker Desktop (Windows) now in our team and just gone to using the software (mainly SQL server) natively on our machines instead.
benbristow··on Microsoft is testing ads in the Windows 11 File Explorer
I don't know, and tbh I don't care. Doesn't seem like Microsoft care either.
benbristow··on Microsoft is testing ads in the Windows 11 File Explorer
> I can’t imagine Enterprise versions of Windows will have this enabled.

Free Windows licences through MSDN (if you work at a .NET/Microsoft shop) ftw. Running Enterprise on my personal machine.

benbristow··on Vanced has been discontinued
I signed up for it via an Indian VPN. Well worth the (£1.30) $1.70 a month - in the UK directly it's a bit of a rip-off IMHO.
benbristow··on Ask HN: Which VPN provider should one use from Russia?
Slow though for the most parts. And you wouldn't want to be congesting the TOR network for the likes of media consumption (e.g. YouTube) as it may be required for other people in more need.
benbristow··on Ask HN: Which VPN provider should one use from Russia?
Perhaps on a Lightsail instance, an EC2 instance would potentially be pretty pricey. That or DigitalOcean/Linode/Hetzner or an independent VPS provider listed on the likes of lowendbox.com
benbristow··on A lock with many keys: Spoofing DNSSEC-signed domains in 8.8.8.8
1.1.1.1 is good but it has a bit of an annoying issue where it won't resolve archive.is/archive.today names.

It's been discussed before

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=19828317

I use that site quite often so it makes it a bit of a no-go.

benbristow··on Convert curl commands to code in several languages
Something a bit different but I'm a huge fan of NSwag recently.

https://github.com/RicoSuter/NSwag

We use it on a project at work in C# and I've also been using it personally on pet projects with TypeScript.

Allows you to automatically generate REST API clients based on Swagger/OpenAPI specs and is very customizable.

Really nice if building out microservices and you're wanting to communicate between each other or building web apps and want to communicate with APIs. Saves a lot of time writing code to make requests and handle different status codes etc. Automatically generates all the classes/interfaces with sane naming schemes etc.

Even has a GUI application to generate the configs also if you wish.

benbristow··on Windows Defender is enough, if you harden it
One problem with Windows Defender I believe is that if you were a malware author the first AV you'd want to try and bypass is Windows Defender as it's the default which is used on most Windows PCs for your 'MVP'.

Bypassing other AVs would really be a 'nice to have'

benbristow··on 43 km line of sight with USB WiFi stick (2005)
That must be fun over SSH/Telnet. 43 hours between every key press

Joking, but thanks for the interesting info (and Frost1x also).

benbristow··on 43 km line of sight with USB WiFi stick (2005)
I wonder what the ping/latency is...
benbristow··on Nvidia DLSS Source Code Leaked
Sure but the WINE folk don’t really know either way if a contributor who contributes has seen it, unless they do some background checks or their email literally ends with @microsoft.com (even then they could be in another Microsoft team away from Windows)
benbristow··on Nvidia DLSS Source Code Leaked
What about projects like WINE - now in use by corporations like Valve? Surely someone who's worked on the project must have seen Microsoft/Windows source code.
benbristow··on How I learned French in 12 months (2020)
Tres bon!
benbristow··on Ask HN: Why is there no small Android phone?
Don't know why you're being downvoted here. Maybe Mark Zuckerberg is lurking around here. It's a valid point. Less screen real estate = less space for ads.
