benbristow··on WiFi without internet on a Southwest flight
I've done something similar on trains in the UK before, specifically LNER (was Virgin Trains East Coast at the time but don't think the Wi-Fi solution has changed) trains. The icomera captive portal has an endpoint which returns the GPS coordinates of the train along with the speed. And some other endpoints for next stops etc.

Once made a little React app that showed the train on a Leaflet map. Was a good waste of a few hours.

benbristow··on Paint on Windows is getting layers and transparency support
Using an almost 12 year old piece of networking software doesn't seem very secure to me.
benbristow··on Paint on Windows is getting layers and transparency support
I use Teams on a daily basis. End up closing it to save some RAM as it's eating up around 800MB of RAM for a chat app.

23MB for a modern calculator in this day & age when many apps are written in Electron/EdgeHTML/web technologies is pretty good

Do people even use uTorrent anymore after the advertisements were brought in? I use qBittorrent when I need some Linux ISOs and in an idle state it's using 20MB which isn't bad either.

benbristow··on Paint on Windows is getting layers and transparency support
Usually to save them somewhere for later (in memory)
benbristow··on Paint on Windows is getting layers and transparency support
Is it? Just opened it on Windows 10 and it opens instantly and uses 23MB of RAM which is rather low for a modern application. Calculator is also fully open source now.

benbristow··on Paint on Windows is getting layers and transparency support
For as basic a program it is, it's rather useful.

My work only currently only give machines with 16GB RAM which gets eaten up by Edge/Teams/Outlook, security applications incl. Defender and then any dev tools on top of that. Trying to campaign for 32GB machines but bureaucracy takes its time in the public sector. The IT team have also just removed Paint 3D for some reason via InTune.

Just opened Paint right now on my Windows 10 desktop and it's using 13MB of RAM for a blank canvas.

For pasting a screenshot and putting some rectangles/arrows on it, it works a charm.

Something to be said about Paint!

benbristow··on WinRAR sold 5,449 licenses in a day
Doesn't support compression though, only decompression. Something to do with RAR licencing I believe.
benbristow··on Simple PowerShell things allowing you to dig a bit deeper than usual
With functions

  function Get-Something {
    Param (
      [Parameter(Mandatory=$true, Position=0)]
      [string] $Name,
      [Parameter(Mandatory=$true, Position=1)]
      [int] $Id
    )
    # Write the output to the console
    Write-Output "Name: $Name, Id: $Id"
  }

  Get-Something "Alice" 42
If you were to call

  Get-Something("Alice", 42)
It would pass "Alice", 42 to the first parameter.

You can use named parameters to get round this, e.g.

  Get-Something -Name "Alice" -Id 42
Still a bit of a gotcha!
benbristow··on Simple PowerShell things allowing you to dig a bit deeper than usual
I've often gotten caught out using commas to separate arguments like most other scripting languages ever. One of those things you need to remember when writing Powershell scripts!
benbristow··on Upcoming .com and .xyz domain price increase
It is a monopoly. - .com domains have the brand-recognition and trust behind them. Other TLDs still feel 'knock-off' especially for lesser technically aware people.

Would you trust myshop.com or myshop.xyz more?

benbristow··on AI bots are now better than humans at decoding CAPTCHAs
wait(random(sensiblerange));

Even maybe add a

For good measure

benbristow··on Petition to stop France from forcing browsers like Firefox to censor websites
I don't get how this would ever work, apart from preinstalled/precompiled or proprietary browsers? Just grab a copy from another country, or someone can create a script to download the source code, patch out the offending censor code and then compile the browser from source - it's not like it's hard to install dev tools anymore. Or even just distribute the uncensored binaries. Chromium and Firefox are both open-source.
benbristow··on Free Public WiFi
In the UK it's the other way round.

Our big two 'budget' (haha) hotel chains, Premier Inn and Travelodge both charge for barely usable Wi-Fi. The former offering an unlimited free service but restricted to about 500kbps and a paid 'ultimate' service which runs at about 10mbps. The latter giving you 30 mins free and then you have to pay, unless you're in one of their premium rooms where its included. Total racket supplied by Virgin WiFi for both. Thankfully don't often need it with better 4G/5G signal but sometimes the rooms can be Faraday cages.

Most of the more posh hotels I've been to have free unlimited decent WiFi.

benbristow··on Windows 11 calls a zip file a 'postcode file' in UK English
Argos is great. Like Amazon but you can walk in (at least before they started closing loads of their stores and merging them into Sainsbury's)

Same day delivery online before Amazon started doing it with Prime Now too.

Their app update release notes used to be hilarious too but they've stopped doing them, I think the person responsible left. https://thecircular.org/argoss-hilarious-app-updates/

benbristow··on Htmx Is the Future
It was/is quite popular with .NET developers due to TypeScript being very similar to C# and implementing similar patterns like dependency injection (I know dependency injection/IOC isn't .NET specific).
benbristow··on Why I’m using a keyboard phone in 2023
Steve Ballmer on the release of the first iPhone:

“And it doesn't appeal to business customers because it doesn't have a keyboard. Which makes it not a very good email machine.”

benbristow··on TIL: You Can Stop Updating Copyright Attribution Years (2021)
You can update the fallback manually but at least you're somewhat covered until you do so.
benbristow··on TIL: You Can Stop Updating Copyright Attribution Years (2021)

  &copy; <span id="js-copyright-year">2023</span> My Product
  <script>document.getElementById('js-copyright-year').innerHTML = new Date().getFullYear();</script>
Job's a good'un - if the user has JS disabled then they'll just see the year published as a fallback, otherwise it'll show 2024 when the new year rolls in.

If using a templating engine or some SPA framework/library like React then just dynamically substitute there instead or similar in server-side rendered code.

benbristow··on Tax raids at BBC offices in India enter second day
So the Indian government have got all the time in the world to raid offices over tax but don't do anything over scam call centres scamming innocent victims all over the world.
benbristow··on Ask HN: Why are so many PHP projects moving to Node?
Is Babel even needed anymore? Only for the more experimental features like decorators etc.

Now IE is dead most people are using Chrome/WebKit based browsers like Edge/Google Chrome/Opera/Safari or other standards-compliant browsers like Firefox.

benbristow··on Last.fm turns 20
Still use Last.fm. Great service and a nice API to boot if you're wanting to make anything music-y. Integrates nicely into Spotify for playback statistics.

Shame it's pretty much on life-support now and any new features seem to behind a paywall.

benbristow··on Ask HN: How do I build a website as a backend engineer?
It’s rather unavoidable nowadays to build webapps without a build pipeline of sorts.

Certainly you can achieve it but I’d argue it’s more work to avoid build tools than to adopt one.

benbristow··on Ask HN: How do I build a website as a backend engineer?
Last commit was the end of last year - it's pretty much all but dead.

I'd recommend Vue or Svelte if looking for something similar.

benbristow··on Rage Against The Machine’s explosive debut album changed everything
I’m sorry about the people you knew, truly.

But I disagree with the argument you gave afterwards about “anyone who cares about other humans get vaccinated” because the vaccine does barely anything to stop the spread.

Even Pfizer themselves admitted they never even tested that statement before they rolled out the jabs.

https://www.news.com.au/technology/science/human-body/pfizer...

benbristow··on Rage Against The Machine’s explosive debut album changed everything
Rage Against The Machine... the group that said "f*** you I won't do what they tell you", but then played shows that required you to show a government mandated vaccine passport to go to their shows.

Hard to take them seriously afterwards.

benbristow··on UK Government scans all web servers hosted in the UK for vulnerabilities
Got something similar here in the UK also. I once had a Linux server box running on my DMZ, got a few physical letters from my residential ISP (Virgin Media UK) saying they detected some open port that was recommended to be closed (Think it was NetBIOS port).

Might have been part of this scheme.

Don't have that box anymore (was around 5 years ago) or a PC on the DMZ so haven't received any since.
