benbristow··on Taco Bell is going all in on artificial intelligence
I would hope AI would advise me to avoid Taco Bell. At least the UK franchises, it's god awful.
benbristow··on Indian police pinpoint seat of movie camming pirate by analyzing the film angle
They can spend the time figuring this out but do barely anything to stop the prevalence of scam call centres in the country. Money talks.
benbristow··on Ente Auth: open-source Authy alternative for 2FA
1Password accounts have a password and a security key/token you need to login.
benbristow··on Ente Auth: open-source Authy alternative for 2FA
You'd need ID to get one. And you'd need the security key also.

I guess there has to be a vulnerability _somewhere_ to make it possible to get back in again in an emergency.

benbristow··on Ente Auth: open-source Authy alternative for 2FA
I've been using Authy as a backup for 1Password (previously BitWarden/LastPass)'s 2FA since in a worst-case scenario I can get a replacement SIM card from my phone network's store and get back into my 1Password account via recovery. This has had to be tested once when my phone got pickpocketed in Amsterdam.

Is there a better alternative? Authy is fine for this use, the rest of my 2FA tokens are in 1Password itself.

benbristow··on Why Vivaldi won't follow the current AI trend?
> If every company and their dog started churning out their own LLM as a business or revenue model, one can easily see the supply overwhelming demand here apart from many other problems.

This certainly seems the case on the iOS/Play stores. Primary AI apps from the big hitters (OpenAI/Gemini/Copilot etc.) but then loads of knock-off ones from those riding the AI hype train. All the knockoffs being basically wrappers around APIs from the big hitters with ads/in-app purchases.

benbristow··on Why Vivaldi won't follow the current AI trend?
On Android
benbristow··on Why Vivaldi won't follow the current AI trend?
It's different though, isn't it? Social media walls are the social media sites giving you what they want to show you. AI tools are (mostly) you asking for what you want - albeit you're at the mercy of whatever the AI gives you back, but usually it's what you ask for.
benbristow··on Why Vivaldi won't follow the current AI trend?
Was using Vivaldi on Android, quite a solid browser.

Unfortunately, the lack of AI functionality has made Edge a more attractive browser. Very useful to let AI summarise a large wall of text when browsing Hacker News for example. If only they'd add a 'close all tabs but this one' feature.

Running web software without updates from some unknown source doesn't sound like a very good idea. Lots of stories out there of communities using "nulled" software which got hacked because of a backdoor left in.
benbristow··on Outlook/Hotmail is no longer blocking my mail server
Ah yes, a government owned email service, what could go wrong?
benbristow··on McDonald's ice cream machine hackers say they found 'smoking gun'
Don't need to touch those unless you need to use chip and pin. 99% of card machines in the UK take contactless and mobile payments.
benbristow··on McDonald's ice cream machine hackers say they found 'smoking gun'
Those things never seem to work properly, at least in the UK. Receipt printers are always broken. Also was a study a few years back pre-COVID about them being covered in faeces particles.

I do prefer them to ordering at the counter due to pretty bad eyesight and having more time and I usually pay by card anyway but they're not the best things.

benbristow··on Gemini "duck" demo was not done in realtime or with voice
Funny, I asked Google Bard to guess what the actual product name was from the comment.

"It was probably Office Web Apps. It was a web-based office suite that was introduced in 2008. It included Word Web App, Excel Web App, Powerpoint Web App, and OneNote Web App. It was not SharePoint, but it was based on SharePoint technology."

benbristow··on Omegle 2009-2023
Obviously has a vote of confidence. The companies using it are making money. Just like those using PHP and WordPress.

You can run .NET MVC on Linux/Docker/K8S nowadays natively very easily as a first-class customer.

benbristow··on A secret deal let Spotify bypass Android's app store fees
Microsoft seem to be pushing Linux in Azure quite heavily nowadays. Surprised about the Windows thing. Especially for game servers where Linux is in it's element.
benbristow··on Adobe Creative Suite 2 ESR (2005)
Let's say the 'replacement' dll file isn't very good at verification.
benbristow··on Adobe Creative Suite 2 ESR (2005)
Surprising as those copies are quite easily 'available' with a copy + paste of a certain version of amtlib.dll
benbristow··on Microsoft lays hands on login data: Beware of the new Outlook
It 'just works'.

I've got Office 365 for Business for my personal email. Comes with OneDrive for Business (built on SharePoint) with 1TB storage, all the Office apps, Bing Chat(GPT) for Enterprise, Outlook app on Android/iOS etc. etc. Integrates perfectly on Windows.

The email service is great, works as expected and emails don't go undelivered with great spam filtering.

Can't think of a better provider. I used to be with Google Workspace but after transferring my Google account it's irreversible and can't go back to a 'personal' account while losing access to many Google services like (I know it's dead now) Stadia. Had to create a new 'personal' Google account and transfer everything over manually after doing a takeout - lost a few things like my old YouTube account and Google Play purchases.

benbristow··on Omegle 2009-2023

benbristow··on Omegle 2009-2023

What's wrong with ASP.NET? (MVC, not the travesty that is WebForms)
benbristow··on Microsoft is retiring Visual Studio for Mac in 2024
Indeed. To use the new C# devkit in Visual Studio Code you need a Visual Studio/MSDN subscription too.

JetBrains Rider's a bigger competitor but even then (at least at my org.) most devs have a Visual Studio Professional/Enterprise subscription as a backup.
