I own a DK2 and have demoed Crescent Bay several times this year and have a hard time believing this. Which demos were screen door-y to you on the CB? i.e. which specific scenes... please be specific.
benawabe896··on Teaching Is Not a Business
I loved school because I enjoyed learning and was the top of the class. I had a compulsion to finish every test first, and have the highest score. IMO, I was born to learn, and would have succeeded in almost any type of educational system.
benawabe896··on Can I work at Facebook with a family?
Awesome! Thanks for the comment.
benawabe896··on Can I work at Facebook with a family?
This is an awesome response, thank you very much!
benawabe896··on Announcing TypeScript 1.0
Yep, voted down for no reason. I have actual real world experience with teams trying to use this technology. Is there an actual MS army trying to keep these threads pro MS?
benawabe896··on Announcing TypeScript 1.0
I always get voted down for this, but I still feel that typescript is an answer to a question that nobody is asking. (I'm also very suspect of all of the positive comments. Is HN really this pro-MS for JavaScript?) In my company, we literally have a typescript counterpart team doing the same projects. Our code is cleaner, better architected, and our team is able to consistently produce 2 to 3 times more features. In my experience, the teams that choose typescript are usually windows devs that cannot wean themselves off of visual studio due to their dependence upon auto completion and IDE tools. I'm not hating, I just don't understand why any js dev would add code to their code.
benawabe896··on TypeScript included with Visual Studio 2013 Update 2
I still don't quite understand why anyone would use TS... especially without an IDE.
benawabe896··on SICP in Clojure
Could we stop posting this please? It is a fantastic idea, but is incomplete and not worked on much at all.

benawabe896··on Ask HN: What do you wish you knew when you were 25?
This is extremely important to know for many reasons. For emphasis... HR is not your friend! Their loyalty is to the company, and that is all.
benawabe896··on Form letter response for engineering recruiting emails
I definitely understand the sentiment in this comment, but if 60k annual is a good salary, think about 120k annually for just being a parasitic worm recruiter. Most folks at that "30 buck" rate have no idea that the employers would pay then much higher directly, and merely assume that the recruiter just took a flat fee. When it's understood that the recruiter took a percentage of the income, and that said percentage equates to double what the employee is actually getting paid... that's when the hatred starts.
benawabe896··on Form letter response for engineering recruiting emails
Why is there not some way to disrupt this industry??? It is maddening that these people even exist. How is normal to take 35% of someone's salary for 6 months because you got to them first at the right time? How is it ethical to whittle a starry eyed junior down to 30 bucks an hour so you can take 60 or 70 plus? There has to be a way simpler way to connect folks to jobs in this day and age. </rant> ...Sorry, it just gets to me every once in a while.

Also, loved the letter, it's great.

benawabe896··on Texas becomes first state to require warrant for e-mail snooping
It's refreshing to see some glimmer of decency from any political entity.
benawabe896··on Pick the right metric to incentivize the behavior you want
Bummer, I thought this was going to be an article talking about a person's own behavior. Personal analytics are fascinating to me, and if someone was to figure out some cool metrics to help incentivize personal behavior, that would be really interesting.
benawabe896··on PayPal denies teenager reward for finding website bug
Looks like PayPal is trying hard to take EA's crown.
benawabe896··on Lying Microsoft Advertising
It seems to me as though most of Microsoft's advertising lately feels a tad deceitful/disingenuous. Whether it's trying to convince that Bing really is better than Google (really it is I promise), or that Windows 8 just blows people away with it's ease of use, I feel as though the campaigns are trying to convince me that I am the problem. Maybe I'm being unfair... not sure, it's just how it hits me.
benawabe896··on Baby's life saved with 3-D printed device that restored his breathing
What a truly wonderful technology this is.
benawabe896··on New Technology Is Making Us More Like the Amish
I downgraded to a basic phone around 4 weeks ago, and am very happy with my decision. If I find it really necessary to look something up or answer an email while at the dinner table, I make the trek up my stairs to do so. I didn't realize quite how often I was on my phone checking texts/emails/facebook. If I didn't feel a buzz for a couple of minutes, I found myself checking my pocket to make sure my phone was still there. Now I can leave my phone upstairs or on the counter without thinking twice. My wife is now considering the change herself. Now that I'm not on it so much, she finds herself being the one distracted from our conversations and doesn't like it.
benawabe896··on GoDaddy forbids account deletion
This seems like a more public representation of what is probably being done on most sites anyway, with the exception of the login credentials being invalidated. That being said, it is more than a little unnerving to know that my account will always be accessible in one form or another. As a member of the "internet" I felt that there were certain understood "rights" that were available to me... account suicide being one of them. I guess that type of thinking is more hopeful than realistic nowadays.
benawabe896··on How to move to data science?
Very cool. I'm currently going through O'Reilly's "Python for Data analysis", and can speak to it's quality as well.
benawabe896··on How to move to data science?
Thanks for the reply demian. Did you or someone you know make this type of career switch?
benawabe896··on How to move to data science?
I just hope more people see the question.
benawabe896··on Ask HN: Can I learn to be a programmer/developer without going to university?
I would agree with this only to a point. Sometimes there is a wall that you run into that you can't make over by yourself. The little hint, nudge, or push in the right direction can open up understanding that maybe wasn't attainable alone.

benawabe896··on Ask HN: I'm not confident in my startups ability to execute
The part that would make me pause is that it sounds like you don't buy in to the product. If it is truly just the limitations of the skillset, I say press forward. If it's just a weak idea that is just wanting to die, let it.
benawabe896··on Show HN: Hacking recruiting - Coder's Coffee
Good stuff, and I'm currently looking. Was hoping for more than a sign-up.
benawabe896··on USPS gets into the SPAM business

benawabe896··on Khan Academy on 60 Minutes
This has been a very helpful site to me personally for brushing up on some rusty concepts, and I am thankful for it.
benawabe896··on I Want to Work for Khan
A bit of friendly feedback. When I view the site in Firefox or Chrome (width of 1100px), the paragraph that starts "Last year" is covered up by the photo "Pitching MassChallenge". It only shows if my browser width is at least 1185px. Great stuff btw!
benawabe896··on Jon Stewart Talks SOPA, at Last
I don't want to play down the clip as it was humorous, but the actual sopa content was from :17 - :35. Out of a 6 minute clip, I was thinking that there would be more.
benawabe896··on Internet Explorer has a PR problem.
For me, as has been mentioned before, the problem is not necessarily with the browser, but with the extraordinarily long support that Microsoft has with previous versions. Instead of just hacking for IE6, I have to accommodate for all of the versions that have a acceptable usage rate.

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy with the direction, but IE has caused a lot of pain for a number of years, and I anticipate for a number of years still to come. No amount of PR is going to fix that IMHO
