ben336··on Dead Code Should Be Buried – Why I Didn't Contribute to NLTK
I hate this genre of post that basically follows the line: "I went to <established project> and attempted to educate them. When they didn't listen I went and built something better. Now its clear they should have listened to me, and you should all abandon their software"

Almost always the scope of the new project is much smaller, different or much less mature than the project being bashed. Open source projects are not required to make changes to please any arbitrary user that wants to make changes, even if it's to bring technical improevements.

In NLTK's case, they have a whole book written around their project. Presumably significant changes to project structure and function would mean heavy documentation/writing work, and might not fit the goals of their project. Bashing them as a result just shows a complete lack of understanding of how/why people write and maintain software.

ben336··on How to avoid the software salary ceiling
> And as I stated, a manager should not necessarily make more money than the people they manage.

"Should not" is very different than "does not". In reality, managers almost always make more

ben336··on Atom 1.0
You can call CoffeeScript functions from JavaScript and vice versa. There's no reason that you can't use the UI library from code written in JS. The fact that its written in CoffeeScript is an implementation detail
ben336··on Why I Defaulted on My Student Loans
As somebody who is currently struggling with a huge amount of student debt, this strikes me as quite... self-righteous?

I can understand the idea that the government should give free education, or that they should support education with grants instead of loans, or that college tuition should be cheaper. I'm all for people advocating for those causes.

But if you take a loan, you've entered a contract. Breaking that contract isn't something to be proud of. Saying that his options were boring career with debt and soul crushing career without debt is disingenuous. If you took $60k (or whatever) of somebody elses money, be willing to put in the work to pay it off, then you get to do what you want. If you aren't willing to do that, then find a way to subvert the system that doesn't involve you taking large amounts of other peoples money, or at least admit that you made a poor decision.

ben336··on Brunch: Replace gulp, grunt and increase your dev speed
If you're doing the whole thing every time, that would be your biggest problem, regardless of tools. It sounds like Brunch does incremental builds out of the box, which would definitely help you, but you can setup Grunt or gulp to do the same thing. It just takes a little work.

We do that with gulp, and after the initial file runs (~8-10 seconds), updates are instant every time.

ben336··on Underscore and Lodash Merge Thread
Heres a breakdown of the differences between the two : http://benmccormick.org/2014/11/12/underscore-vs-lodash/

A few months old but should still be reasonably accurate

ben336··on We have a problem with promises
Logging errors to the console can be helpful to find them during debugging/development (as opposed to having them fail silently).

The goal isn't to leave errors in, its to expose them when something changes to make them happen so that you can do the 2 things above.

ben336··on PyPy.js: A fast, compliant Python implementation for the web
The other issue with Python in the browser is that the significant whitespace requirement prevents minification, which would bloat download size.

ben336··on React Native: Initial Thoughts
I have. Not uncommon in Backbone development for instance to keep templates in separate files from the views. If the templates are short you can inline them, but sometimes its easier to just be consistent and give every template its own file. It definitely does add friction compared to React though.

ben336··on Google Fiber is coming to Atlanta, Charlotte, Nashville and Raleigh-Durham
I had a chance to hear a discussion with the Durham City Manager about this last year. Basically the cities that are most willing to work with Google (favorable laws/willingness to guarantee removing construction red tape/etc) have a huge leg up. There are strategic reasons too, but Google wants to come in, lay down a bunch of cables and move on to the next.

They have the leverage to ask cities to actively pull down barriers that other ISPs would face, and the cities willing to do that are the ones who get consideration.

ben336··on Lodash v3.0.0
Interestingly, in practice lo-dash actually doesn't proxy through to the native implementation for things like map and forEach. Just using loops ends up being more performant because of some edge cases in the ES5 spec for those methods that lo-dash and underscore don't follow.

ben336··on Stack Exchange Raises $40M Led by A16Z to Boost Its Programmer Forums
That is actually (surprisingly) not made super prominent on a users profile page. There is a place to list questions/answers that you felt were good representations of your skill/knowledge
ben336··on The problem with Angular
> If the user views 100 pages

Most sites are not going to have users viewing 100 pages within a single session / before the cache expires. If you can reuse a template that many times then SPAs make sense certainly. But for many sites (especially content focused ones) the math is harder than that.

ben336··on The problem with Angular
I can't really verify the authors thesis that most people using Angular are backend developers, but it does seem to have become the first thing everybody tries to learn after JS/jQuery. I've been interviewing a lot of entry level candidates lately, and "I've also started playing with Angular" has practically been a theme song.
ben336··on A new Microsoft browser?
Eh? IE9 isn't the latest version available for any version of Windows.

8 is the latest for XP/Vista

11 is the latest for 7/8/8.1

9 is still popular because not everybody upgrades browsers, but giving users who don't upgrade browsers a new option is unlikely to be helpful.

Communicating to them that IE is going away and that they should upgrade to a modern browser, "Spartan" or otherwise, would possibly help this situation, as the author suggests.

ben336··on Real-World JavaScript Anti-Patterns
That's becoming less of an issue these days in general. But many of the examples use underscore/lodash, which do in fact support old IEs.
