ben-gy··on Ask HN: Finding an idea of your own to work on as a programmer
The question itself is flawed - would recommend rewriting (and adjusting your mindset for this to) “Finding a problem of your own....” - this mindset change should (hopefully) set you on a path of solving problems you experience daily, weekly, or monthly - IMHO solutions you build from this POV will be much more personally rewarding and open up entrepreneurial pathways should you want to follow that route.
ben-gy··on Lisbon’s startup scene rises as Portugal gears up
I’ve had some great success finding affordable, senior Rails developers in Portugal on Upwork
ben-gy··on Show HN: Vantage – An alternative AWS console focused on developer experience
Great product - sorely needed for AWS - that said Heroku is an interesting choice... I’ve been using it for almost 10 years now and I’m not sure how much more room for improvement there is - maybe I’ve got blinkers on - what are the Heroku UI/UX pain points you’re seeking to solve?
ben-gy··on Bot (91.241.19.84) from Russia has tried to hack my site every day
I need to look into this further - because I have set the firewall rules in Cloudflare to block Russia but then Sqreen is still picking up these IPs - I suspect there is some sort of spoofing going on to get through the Cloudflare firewall so I’m not sure how genuinely effective this strategy is...
ben-gy··on Bot (91.241.19.84) from Russia has tried to hack my site every day
I already done this - but just seems a bit archaic given where technology is as it in terms of what else could be done...

That’s a great point regarding a false positive / compromised server acting maliciously.

One problem is that even when using a security setup like the one I’ve implemented, it’s still a one-to-one relationship.

Do you know if there’s a shared data / collective approach so for example, you and I could connect our traffic data to a shared fail2ban implementation for example?

ben-gy··on Several Apple Services Down
You should read the terms and conditions for your updates more thoroughly. They are mor liable for you losing your phone. The Find My app is an added bonus to help you find it but not a legal obligation for doing so.
ben-gy··on People expect technology to suck because it sucks
I couldn’t agree more - for better or worse, the expectation for a perfect “it just works” solution (of course, being relative to the exact use case) is at an all time high ( in my opinion anyway) - I’m very interested to how incumbents respond (or don’t respond) to this dynamic in the coming few years...
ben-gy··on Ask HN: What kind of specialist do I need for help pricing a SaaS product?
please ignore the typos - not having a good phone/keyboard day today
ben-gy··on Ask HN: What kind of specialist do I need for help pricing a SaaS product?
Talk to your customers - find out how much they pay to solve the problem you’re currently solving (or the opportunity cost of not solving it) - as a founder you shouldn’t outsource this skill - if you don’t have it, develop it by talking to your customer and testing prices in the market and taking to other founders
ben-gy··on Ask HN: Has anyone built a SaaS for local municipalities?
Municipalities are my biggest client base for https://covidcomply.org - I’ve been doing a spray and pray sales approach for this that has been going very well - governments like to make things complicated but what I’ve found is most of the time the person on the other side is sick of the long complex processes as well which makes relationship based sales work well - this in references to Australian culture though - this might not translate to wherever you are based
ben-gy··on Ask HN: One person SaaS founder, any tips for someone wanting to get in?
I post asking for feedback in Facebook forums for restaurants and cafes
ben-gy··on Ask HN: One person SaaS founder, any tips for someone wanting to get in?
My recommendation, think short term, ask what your customers want, make money from day one. Every journey is different, but if you're willing to talk to customers, build what they need as fast as possible, and make money from day one then you have a chance.

In terms of ideas, I would recommend exploring solutions you take for granted in you current country, that don't exist (or could be improved) in the country you're moving to. That's usually a good place to start.

In March I lost my 1.1m seed round for a startup I was starting in the event sector. Whilst carefully watching what was changing as a result of COVID-19 I founded https://covidcomply.org - first version was built in 6 days, 44 days of development later I can't keep up with customer requests now.

Take away; Chase daily revenue (small), daily product improvements (small), daily customer feedback (as much as possible).

That's my 2 cents - hope it helps ;)

In Victoria, Australia the government announced a mandate for capturing contact details for all customers entering a variety of businesses reopening on June 1.

There weren’t any solutions that made the user experience for everyone involved simple and a “just works” type experience so I spent a couple of weeks pulling this solution together.

I’d be keen to get feedback and ideas from the HN community about it, particularly for its applicability in other countries as I’ve not heard much about similar rules elsewhere except in New Zealand.

ben-gy··on Ask HN: Got a YC S14 batch interview?
Applied with http://astute.io and http://regular.io, got help from YC alums in our application and it was pretty solid, weakest parts of the application were we hadn't launched yet and didn't have a demo, users, or traction. We've quit our jobs and finish up soon to go all out on http://astute.io regardless. Fun times ahead, so excited :)
ben-gy··on Ask HN: Someone is offering to buy my side project
Hmmm. This sounds a little too good to be true. My gut feel is that they are looking to get a peek at your source code, and they'll want that before they give you any money. Keep in mind what PG says about deals, assume that it's not going to happen and just keep doing what you're doing.

That said, this is a great, low cost way to experiment with this type of interaction. If I were you, I'd set some strict goals as if it's a genuine offer (e.g. minimum sale price, not showing any source code pre-receiving money, etc), and then see how it plays out.

I've been in similar situations to yours before, and It's been really valuable to learn and make mistakes at small scale. As soon as it becomes a pain and your not getting much out of the experience, just finish it up on your own terms. The important part being that you should know what you want if it was real, and what you want out of the experience. Then either way you have nothing to lose.

ben-gy··on Ask HN: Quit our jobs, applied to YC, booked flights to SF. Who should we meet?
We arrive on the 22nd. Maybe let's do Skype? I'll shoot you an email :)
ben-gy··on Ask HN: Quit our jobs, applied to YC, booked flights to SF. Who should we meet?
We haven't received an invite to interviews yet. But coming from Australia means we had to book early or else our flights would cost $2k+ each.

Haha :)
