I struggle with the math on how this is running your typical fridge for even 16 hours
beezle··on A $100 DIY muon tomographer
Memory has faded as it was in the last millenia... junior year physics lab one of the experiments was muon counting. It used two large NaI scintillators covered in foil attached to PMTs with a potential > 10kV. I don't recall exactly how we separated them, probably just some type of stand.
beezle··on Math Academy, part 1: My eigenvector embarassment
I was a double major, one in physics, in the 80s. After the three semester engineering physics classes, intro QM was taught spring sophomore year. We used Liboff. In addition, it was required for all physics, chem and engineering majors to take math 20(5?) which was linear algebra.

And given that most of basic QM was formalized by 1930 and relies upon eigenvectors, hard to see any physics course taught since that time not having it.

beezle··on YouTube Ads Made an Absurd Amount of Money in 2024
Its one thing to have 5 minutes of ads per 60 as it was back in the days of just OTA TV. Quite another when you are hit with 30 or more seconds of ads on a 2 or 3 minute video.
beezle··on Eggs US – Price – Chart
I got two dozen eggs at Costco yesterday for $6.69 (the run of the mill white eggs).
beezle··on Hacking Subaru: Tracking and controlling cars via the admin panel
Slightly off topic: How are recent Mazda's in regard to all of this stuff? They were not included in that Mozilla privacy expose and I have a CX on my short list for this spring.
beezle··on Hacking Subaru: Tracking and controlling cars via the admin panel
The cops could only act if the car was on the street without getting a warrant first and they would not even consider that unless he went to the area in question and made the car do something distinctive enough.

We all know that even if the cops would file for the warrant, it would not happen quickly and the car would be chopped and gone long before.

So basically, yes this was a useless feature. Perhaps if it happened in a small town/remote area the outcome might have been different. Major city? I doubt the result would be much different than NYC.

beezle··on Hacking Subaru: Tracking and controlling cars via the admin panel
Just as an aside - a friend had their car nicked in NYC this winter. He was able to tell the cops the car location from some Toyota find my car type thing. The cops said they saw nothing on the street so unless he could come and make the horn beep infront of a garage - and then get a warrant - there was nothing more to do.

He now has a new vehicle.

beezle··on Ross Ulbricht granted a full pardon
If you drive the get away car in a bank robbery and someone inside is murdered, guess what? You get to be charged as well.
beezle··on Stargate Project: SoftBank, OpenAI, Oracle, MGX to build data centers
hundreds of thousands of jobs? I'll wait for the postmortem on that prediction. Sounds a lot like Foxconn in Wisconsin but with more players.
beezle··on Ross Ulbricht granted a full pardon
Wonder if he can be charged with that now? Was there anything in the pardon related to this? AFAIK there is no time limit on bringing charges related to murder?
beezle··on Ross Ulbricht granted a full pardon
It is also the case that prosecutors need to decide both the probability of conviction, the effort needed to do so and whether likely conviction on other serious charges are sufficient for the people to feel that justice has been done.
beezle··on Ross Ulbricht granted a full pardon
What a travesty. Maybe life was too long a sentence but this was far too short.

beezle··on Sci-fi books that you may never have heard of, but definitely should read
Was about to say so many of these "you've never heard of" lists are books within the past decade but there are just so many older ones. Asimov alone wrote many book outside of the robot and foundation series.

One that only the older set may know is Cities in Flight by James Blish (technically a trilogy but primarily sold as the single combined novel).

beezle··on Sci-fi books that you may never have heard of, but definitely should read
I just finished Hail Mary this past week. Not as big a fan of it as most seem to be. I found the narrative style to get tedious about half way through the book. A few issues too with events late in the story. 7.5-8/10 by me, above average but not elite.
beezle··on The richest people borrow against their stock (2021)
Once the amounts get lumpy there needs to be complete assessment of counterparty risk (you). IB can't assume that you are only borrowing from them and that the collateral in your account won't first be liened by another party, etc.
beezle··on The richest people borrow against their stock (2021)
For many things, IB is great. Certainly if you are a futures trader it is very good, same for most equity/option trading. But for bond trading, expect a complete nightmare at tax time. Their "tax department" has no clue how to properly and consistently amortize bond premiums and quite honestly (personal experience) does not give a rats.
beezle··on The richest people borrow against their stock (2021)
Keep in mind that the bench mark rate is almost always something akin to bills so is a very short time horizon. That may be great or not so great compared to what rate you might get on say a 5/10/15 yr collaterlized loan.

beezle··on UCLA professor says he's homeless due to low pay
Per smartasset.com:

70K salary in Los Angeles - Gross $5,833/mo, filing single, including federal, state, fica, state disability gives a monthly take home of $4,447

So find it hard to believe he is "homeless", seems to be more by choice. And if the take home after paying rent is still too high, do like most others do - get a roommate to share expenses.

beezle··on The ACF plugin on the WordPress directory has been taken over by WordPress.org
A fan blog that can get a lot of comments over a short span of time.

Any alternative must have a hosted option, I'm not playing admin for something that already takes up a lot of my time, as I said out of the goodness of my heart and wallet.

The best I can say for wordpress is that myself, other contributors and our commenters tolerate it, though quite often it leans towards hate it. I've yet to hear anyone say they love it hence the ask.

beezle··on The ACF plugin on the WordPress directory has been taken over by WordPress.org
What's a good alternative to say the Wordpress personal plan? (note: its a goodness of heart type thing for others so low cost is important)

When done on my Xperia cell phone, even a small shift in screen orientation made the green leaners into obviously blue. Might be worthwhile capturing phone position if you can.
