beervirus··on New York City bans natural gas in new buildings
Power plants are more efficient at generating electricity, mechanical work, etc. than small generators. They are certainly not more efficient at generating heat than just burning the gas is.
beervirus··on New York City bans natural gas in new buildings
Shhhhhh. Something must be done, and this is something. Therefore it must be done.
beervirus··on Shrooms: What You Need to Know
Ask your shadiest friend who his shadiest friend is.
beervirus··on Microsoft forked MIT licensed repo and changed the copyright [fixed]
I mean yeah. But for a few years there, they were at least not as obviously horrible as they used to be, or as some other companies were.
beervirus··on Microsoft forked MIT licensed repo and changed the copyright [fixed]
Y’all are not entitled to the benefit of the doubt any more than obviously-evil companies like Facebook are.
beervirus··on Omicron variant was 73% of U.S. covid cases last week
Nobody’s impugning their honesty. Just pointing out that this is a model, not data.
beervirus··on Tesla remotely unlocks Model 3 car, uses smart summon to help repo agent
“Deserve” is maybe a little too normative. Certainly they shouldn’t act all surprised pikachu when it happens though.
beervirus··on Apple added an orange dot that’s a showstopper for live visuals
>showstopper

That’s a funny word for “extremely minor visual artifact.”

beervirus··on Retailers say thefts are at crisis level. The numbers say otherwise
Sure, but people understand negative numbers. The pony is that if my profit margins are slim, then a smallish loss in theft can be a big deal. Comparing theft loss to gross sales just obscures the reality.
beervirus··on Retailers say thefts are at crisis level. The numbers say otherwise
Article: thisisfine.jpg

But if the retailers are closing up shop, it is not fine. They wouldn’t forego the profits this article assumes exist just to make a political point.

beervirus··on Retailers say thefts are at crisis level. The numbers say otherwise
Loss as a percentage of sales is an odd way of quantifying it. Loss as a percentage of net profit seems like a better figure of merit.
beervirus··on Tesla remotely unlocks Model 3 car, uses smart summon to help repo agent
Not at all. But getting run over is certainly the reasonably foreseeable consequence of your actions. It’s not victim-blaming to suggest that people are ultimately responsible for their own safety, and they ought to take precautions.
beervirus··on Tesla remotely unlocks Model 3 car, uses smart summon to help repo agent
I mean I already bring my phone with me on those errands. My location isn’t exactly a secret.

It sucks, and I hate it. But the car isn’t any additional problem.

beervirus··on Moderna booster increased neutralizing antibody levels against Omicron ~37-fold
Why? We get a flu booster every year, and that’s fine. I’m happy to get a shot every so often if it means I can go about my life like normal.
beervirus··on Moderna booster increased neutralizing antibody levels against Omicron ~37-fold
> When asked to grade the severity of symptoms on a scale from 1 (no symptoms) to 5 (significant symptoms), 42% (33/79) reported level 3 symptoms, whereas 11% (9/79) reported level 4 symptoms. None of the cases required hospitalisation up to 13 December 2021.

I am extremely optimistic.

beervirus··on I was part of a human subject research study without my consent
It’s a survey question.
beervirus··on I was part of a human subject research study without my consent
A human research study? Give me a fucking break.

>someone asked me a question and it scared me

beervirus··on Defrag Like It's 1993
DOS defrag goes back a lot farther than that. It even predates FAT32, let alone NTFS.
beervirus··on President Daniels responds to Chinese student's harassment
> We can already see having consequentialist ethics that don't care about your freedom do a lot better at fighting pandemics

Can we? I have no idea how many people in China have died from covid, and neither do you. All we have to go on is what the state-run media says.

beervirus··on Ask HN: What's the easiest way to make a living with $600k in cash?
>I mean, it can.

>Not minutes

So… it can’t?

beervirus··on Defrag Like It's 1993
Power cycling during a defrag seems like a good way to lose data.
beervirus··on Ask HN: What's the easiest way to make a living with $600k in cash?
Money doesn’t fluctuate in value 50% on a timescale of minutes.
beervirus··on Ask HN: What's the easiest way to make a living with $600k in cash?
Bitcoin isn’t money. It’s a gambling token.

beervirus··on Tell HN: If you use Verizon, opt out of “Custom Experience”
That’s cool but I hope you like automatically being opted in to have your data slurped up since you won’t click on links or investigate whether they’re real.
beervirus··on Verizon overrides users’ opt-out preferences in push to collect browsing history
GDPR is good in its intent, but not great in its implementation. We can do better.
beervirus··on Tell HN: If you use Verizon, opt out of “Custom Experience”
I mean of course there are.

beervirus··on Saule Omarova says banks sank her chance to become a key regulator
> Most senators condemned her because Omarova has proposed nationalizing the American financial system, empowering the Federal Reserve to take over consumer deposits, and “effectively end[ing] banking, as we know it.” It is Omarova who proposed a “National Investment Authority,” a nomenklatura that would redistribute your money into a “big and bold” climate agenda. This, after she recommended that states bankrupt private energy companies so we can “basically get rid of these carbon financiers” by “starv[ing] them of their source of capital.” The woman wrote a paper titled “The People’s Ledger” last year. Then, there is Omarova’s pernicious defense of the USSR’s lack of “a gender pay gap.”

>Omarova is free to kick around theories with her “Marxist Analysis and Policy” Facebook group, but she’s not afforded any special dispensation allowing her to avoid answering for her positions and past comments. Senator John Kennedy brought up her memberships and academic work in the Soviet Union to argue that she hadn’t changed her position today, not that she is bonded to them forever. If you don’t want your nominees to be referred to as “comrade,” don’t nominate socialists who praise the Soviet Union.
