beervirus··on Capturing and Archiving MiniDV Tapes on macOS
Is HEVC really the best option for a long term format that will still be readable in a decade or three? Something more open and standardized seems preferable.
beervirus··on My friends and I are buying 1 of the 11 surviving copies of the US Constitution
What does any NFT “ownership” mean?
beervirus··on Learning how dictionaries work
The article maybe just hints at another issue that’s at least as important. Dictionaries are mostly descriptivist rather than prescriptivist.

Adding “deplatform” or whatever to the dictionary isn’t a statement about how proper it is as a word. It’s a statement that it’s a word in use, and so if you come across it, here’s what it means.

beervirus··on Doing Fraud on Securities Fraud
We’re one big crash away from a return to value investing. This is fun while it lasts though.
beervirus··on Tuvalu looking at legal ways to be a state if it is submerged
I mean I think AGW is obviously a thing. I’m just not so convinced that “the world is burning” or that the direst projections are anything but… theater.

And when people take things that were not caused by climate change, point at them and scream “LOOK, CLIMATE CHANGE,” they’re not doing any favors for the rationality cause.

beervirus··on Tuvalu looking at legal ways to be a state if it is submerged
“We’re faking the world burning and you’re nitpicking about the fakery…”
beervirus··on Rivian valued at over $100B after biggest IPO of 2021
It’s what’s trendy to invest in. It makes as much sense as GME and NFTs.
beervirus··on Rivian valued at over $100B after biggest IPO of 2021
Tesla, on the other hand, screws things up in novel and exciting ways.
beervirus··on Tuvalu looking at legal ways to be a state if it is submerged
When the sea levels rise a significant amount, sure. How much additional coastal erosion does IPCC think we’re getting now, with sea levels up like 4 inches?

My point is that there’s no reason to think that the land Tuvalu has lost has anything to do with climate change. Pretending otherwise is pure theater.

beervirus··on Evergrande teeters on edge of default as $148M payment falls due
Yes, the CCP changing the rules is “the free market.”
beervirus··on Tuvalu looking at legal ways to be a state if it is submerged
Your math is off by an order of magnitude. Sea levels are up by more like 0.1 meter since 1993.

beervirus··on Tuvalu looking at legal ways to be a state if it is submerged
Pure theater.

> Kofe said he delivered the video address, scheduled to be aired at COP26 on Tuesday, in a place that used to be dry land, adding that Tuvalu was seeing a lot of coastal erosion.

Coastal erosion, not climate change, not rising sea levels.

Yes, there was a higher level comment from someone else. But it wasn’t the one you replied to.

I’m guessing you didn’t click like I suggested.
beervirus··on Why nuclear fusion yields more energy than fission
Good explanation, but it kind of buried the lede. The answer is way down at the bottom:

> Fission releases the energy of the electromagnetic force when positively charged parts of the nucleus fly away from one another. Fusion releases the energy of the strong force (much stronger at short distances than the EM force) when the small pieces are captured and held into one nucleus.

beervirus··on After months of delay, the House passes infrastructure bill
It’s not really about infrastructure like roads and stuff. It’s about “infrastructure.”

That seems impossibly ambitious.

That’s true, but it isn’t a claim I made.

New Jersey has some of the absolute worst gun laws in the country.
beervirus··on Can helium be mixed with hydrogen to form a non-explosive mix? (2003)
Helium diffusion is a good point though. If you’re right at the edge of non-flammability and you lose some helium over time…
beervirus··on Can helium be mixed with hydrogen to form a non-explosive mix? (2003)
Diatomic hydrogen is bigger than helium, less prone to diffusing through a membrane.
beervirus··on US Series I Savings Bonds Now Yielding 7.12%
Land, maybe. Hoarding toilet paper and beanie babies probably won’t get you great returns.
beervirus··on US Series I Savings Bonds Now Yielding 7.12%
I certainly wouldn’t put all my money into these bonds. But as an inflation hedge, it seems fine to toss in $10k per year (which is the maximum a person can easily buy anyway).
beervirus··on US Series I Savings Bonds Now Yielding 7.12%
Not true for I bonds.

Buy some VOO every month. Keep doing it. Don’t look at prices for the next few decades.
