beervirus··on Analogue Pocket Hate Story
I didn't really see anything that unreasonable. What did you find "beyond damning"?
beervirus··on Analogue Pocket Hate Story
$10,000 was for moonlighting, not a full-time job.
beervirus··on Toyota owners have to pay $8/month to keep using their key fob for remote start
The marginal amount of gas used by idling the car for a minute before driving it around rounds to zero.
beervirus··on What a progressive utopia does to outdoor dining
Ahh, I thought this was going to be about the “people experiencing homelessness” making it miserable to dine outdoors. Turns out there’s a whole other problem too!

Is Texas an extreme environment? Not particularly, but still, it’s nice to get the air conditioner going a minute or two before getting into a car in August.
beervirus··on Bitcoin Failed in El Salvador. The President Says the Answer Is More Bitcoin
>It’s not about the remittance per se

Exactly my point.

beervirus··on PSA: uBlock/AdBlocks on Chrome to lose function thanks to Manifestv3
Color me shocked.

Why does anyone use Chrome anymore? Firefox is better in every way, and it isn’t tied to the biggest data harvester the world has ever known.

beervirus··on Bitcoin Failed in El Salvador. The President Says the Answer Is More Bitcoin
I’m looking at this:

beervirus··on Bitcoin Failed in El Salvador. The President Says the Answer Is More Bitcoin
$15 is right in line with current btc transaction fees. Maybe a tiny bit higher, but not much.
beervirus··on Bitcoin Failed in El Salvador. The President Says the Answer Is More Bitcoin
1. Remittance payments were already feasible and happening before they adopted btc officially.

2. They’re not cheaper than other methods. They’re more expensive.

beervirus··on Pfizer and Biontech provide update on Omicron variant
VAERS vastly over reports. Stuff like, I took the vaccine last week and now I have a broken leg (because I got hit by a car).
beervirus··on Pfizer and Biontech provide update on Omicron variant
That’s… fine? I don’t care if I have to get a jab every 6 months. I don’t care if Pfizer and Moderna make a ton of money off this—they deserve it.
beervirus··on Pfizer and Biontech provide update on Omicron variant
I find it encouraging. A virus that’s endemic and doesn’t kill people who are vaccinated is not a big deal. Like yeah it would be great if we eradicated it, but this is really fine.

beervirus··on BuzzFeed to go public, after shareholders approve SPAC deal
Plenty of SPACs announce a merger and the stock price goes up. You don’t see much/any redemption in a case like that—why redeem a share for $10 when I can just sell it for $30?
beervirus··on BuzzFeed to go public, after shareholders approve SPAC deal
> Details: BuzzFeed said in an SEC filing following the vote, “the transaction is expected to raise at least $166.2 million," with about $150 million coming from convertible debt financing and $16.2 million from investor cash.

>That $16.2 million of investor cash is 94% less than the $287.5 million the SPAC raised in its IPO in January.

Big oof. The SPAC investors hate the deal and mostly pulled their money out of it.

beervirus··on Bumble claims IP rights on employee's open-source libs
> I will need to fork repos to continue my work.

Uhhhh… if the employer owns it, it presumably isn’t going to be licensed as open source.

beervirus··on Bitcoin Price Tumbles After Wall Street Selloff
Bitcoin is a gambling token. Nothing more.
beervirus··on Reality has a surprising amount of detail (2017)
Cutting stringers instead of using brackets would implicate pretty much exactly the same set of details and problems.
beervirus··on US Should Create Strategy by End of '22 to Reduce Increasing Ocean Plastic Waste
Yes, the US really needs to step in and solve this OVERWHELMINGLY ASIAN problem.

beervirus··on Pixel sent to Google for replacement. They used it to post wife's nudes online
I didn’t say otherwise. It’s obviously the bad actor’s fault, not the owner of the phone.

But still. Come on.

beervirus··on Pixel sent to Google for replacement. They used it to post wife's nudes online
Prudence shouldn’t be recommended? Lol what nonsense is this?
beervirus··on Pixel sent to Google for replacement. They used it to post wife's nudes online
It’s not the victim’s fault. But still… it’s only prudent to take precautions.
beervirus··on FBI's ability to legally access secure messaging app content and metadata [pdf]

beervirus··on Raspberry Pi Trading plans £370m+ stock market IPO
That doesn’t sound like trading.
beervirus··on Raspberry Pi Trading plans £370m+ stock market IPO
> The Raspberry Pi Foundation, formed in 2009, is a registered charity with a goal of putting “the power of computing and digital making into the hands of people all over the world.” The famous eponymous SBC was designed to be affordable and champion programming in schools, hoping to repeat the home computer boom of the 1980s. Raspberry Pi Trading Ltd is a wholly-owned subsidiary responsible for the engineering and trading operations of the foundation.

Why even is there a trading company? Seems random. Why not the Raspberry Pi Coffee Growers Association, or the Raspberry Pi Law Firm?

beervirus··on A $5B hoard of aluminum
Fire is a type (fast) of oxidation. That doesn’t mean that oxidation is a type of fire.
beervirus··on More Cash Invested in Stock in 2021 Than Two Decades Combined
The headline is talking about fund flows. Market cap is for context.
beervirus··on More Cash Invested in Stock in 2021 Than Two Decades Combined
> Investors have poured almost $900 billion into equity exchange-traded and long-only funds in 2021

For context, the total market cap of the companies in the S&P 500 is around $39 trillion. So this is a decent sized inflow, but not as crazy as the headline makes it sound.
