beepboopbeep··on 70TB of Parler users’ messages, videos, and posts leaked by security researchers
It's not unreasonable for a person instigating something through negative posts to receive negative reactions in return. That seems self evident.
beepboopbeep··on The demographic and cultural roots of the midlife crisis
This is a great perspective on it, thank you! I'll be sending this around to a few folks
beepboopbeep··on The demographic and cultural roots of the midlife crisis
I have a personal theory that we enter into a "crisis" of some sort roughly every 5 years. Essentially 1-2 years of definition/growth/change, 2 years-ish of normalcy post change, 1-2 years of redefinition as things become old and others become new/interesting.

A perpetual cycle of shifting identity as we change internally and externally. I think it's a good thing to have and understand, but can be overwhelming as well.

I have zero evidence of this, it's just kind of based on my own observations. It's helped me to not be so hard on my self though when I find my tastes, interests, and identity changing over time.

beepboopbeep··on Should There Be Limits on Persuasive Technologies?
I think there's a clear case for limiting the tactics currently employed by social media. They are using a clear strategy and deploying it to millions/billions through the use of algos. There are multiple ways to attack that and I encourage it before the world collectively loses its mind.
beepboopbeep··on The science of addiction: Do you always like the things you want?
This, in my opinion, overlays very well with doom scrolling partisan entertainment on facebook/instagram. No one enjoys it, but the intensity drives them back.
beepboopbeep··on YouTube to remove content that alleges widespread election fraud
There's nothing wrong with this. I'm glad they're doing it. I've seen too many people go feral and insane over misinformation. Good riddance.
beepboopbeep··on Agents raid home of fired Florida data scientist who built Covid-19 dashboard
They drew guns on her and her kids.

I'd say we should be outraged, but we're awash in outrage because the rule of law has become a one sided bludgeoning instrument for the government to suppress dissent.

I can't wait to get out of here. To hell with this place any more.

beepboopbeep··on EU pushes for 'right to disconnect' from work at home
What a stark contrast to America. A country of "Personal freedom" that utterly entraps you to work and shames you as a socialist for asking for support from your government. Ironically, the cut throat work environment that has trained me to always keep an eye out for a better deal is drawing me to immigrating away from this country to the EU.

(This is a throw away comment to vent my personal frustrations. I'm quite afraid of the terrible responses this will draw from my fellow Americans so pardon me if I skip out form here.)

beepboopbeep··on The Most Common Errors in Undergraduate Mathematics (2009)
This right here was such an infuriating discovery for me. Math never made sense to me until I had a kindly old teacher who insisted she watch me write out every step of a problem (in community college). She pointed out that the logic was fine, I was just being sloppy with my notes which led to errors.

It was like a dam broke over night. Everything clicked and I was so pissed off that it took so long to find such a stupid issue. Better late than never I suppose...

beepboopbeep··on ‘Extremely aggressive’ internet censorship spreads in the world’s democracies
Abandon this thread, all ye who enter.
beepboopbeep··on New study finds psilocybin greatly and quickly relieves depression
Here's my issue with that:

Who are the service providers of the treatment and what training have they taken to do so? There is some available through folks who did original research (eg: John Hopkins) and now do talk and demo circuits but otherwise it's all largely undefined.

I'm paranoid of what this might lead to without strong community standards and ethics. A good first step, but lets hope it doesn't ruin it for others.

beepboopbeep··on New study finds psilocybin greatly and quickly relieves depression
+ With (exceptionally) long term, positive effects when coupled with therapy before, during, and after strong psychedelic trips.

Ultimately, the research results (and anecdotal evidence) for psilocybin are too great to ignore. The next question is - How does it get legalized (which we're seeing the stirrings of) and who gets access to it and how when it is?

beepboopbeep··on U.S. Senate tech hearing becomes political tussle
Cruz was putting on a disingenuous show for right wing audiences. This was a waste of time and further demeans the procedure, and congress.
beepboopbeep··on ACLU sues Palo Alto over ‘unconstitutional’ restrictions at residents-only park
1,400 acres none the less. The ACLU is right to sue, this seems absurd.
beepboopbeep··on SoftBank unmasked as ‘Nasdaq whale’ that stoked tech rally
I feel like that's fishing for quarters in a sewage tank now.
beepboopbeep··on A broken cable smashed a hole 100 feet wide in the Arecibo Observatory
wow, I feel like "Smashed a hole" isn't quite doing that carnage justice. Good luck to them on the repairs :(
beepboopbeep··on The Clean Network – United States Department of State
This particular administration has gone out of its way to gaslight everyone and thing it possibly can. It is to the point that everything they do is consider suspicious and/or a lie at face value. That they have the gall to name this "The Clean Network" and encourage the allies they have been bludgeoning for the past 4 years to join it is both laughable and insulting.
beepboopbeep··on Georgia School Reopening Photo Even Worse Than It Appears
1. There are only bad options on the table because there is no coordination at the federal level. Just denial.

2. There is no other option. You quarantine, or you don't. It's a binary thing. If you don't quarantine, you continue to spread the virus and prolong the issues.

I don't know why you're talking about TB

beepboopbeep··on Georgia School Reopening Photo Even Worse Than It Appears
There is no reason to send kids to school in a hot zone. None.
beepboopbeep··on Georgia School Reopening Photo Even Worse Than It Appears
> Ideology
beepboopbeep··on Georgia School Reopening Photo Even Worse Than It Appears
None of this is rational or remotely within the realm of objective reality. The people making these decisions should be liable for gross negligence and manslaughter should it come to it. There is no excuse for sending kids to school during a pandemic. Absolutely absurd.
beepboopbeep··on Google discontinues the Pixel 4, nine months after release
This was my main regret of getting a pixel 4 and it still bothers me to this day. I was definitely more satisfied with my 3 :(
beepboopbeep··on A Poetic, Mind-Bending Tour of the Fungal World
I am happy to see that this isn't another Stamets hand waving woo generator article on fungi. This is well written and interesting.

>Our lives take place in the space that decomposition leaves behind.

Great quote

beepboopbeep··on Facebook launches its TikTok rival, Instagram Reels
I can't help but feel that zuckerberg has unduly influenced the president to ban tiktok in order for them to further corner the social media market.

This feels wrong.

beepboopbeep··on License Zero: Comments on “The Truth Is Paywalled but the Lies Are Free”
Well said.
beepboopbeep··on Amazon gets priority while mail gets delayed, say US letter carriers
The post office has been unduly laden with nonsense financial restrictions by the GOP in two presidencies now (Bush and Trump). Put another way, they've purposefully sabotaged one of the oldest institutions in America in order to crater it on behalf of private businesses.

Are there things that can be changed at USPS? Certainly, but they are not the primary cause of distress for this institution. See also: The current assault against the NHS in the U.K.

beepboopbeep··on The Billionaire Behind Efforts to Kill the U.S. Postal Service [pdf]
The market can be effective, and it can be especially effective for people with money.

However, it should be noted that some people, possibly even MANY people...do not have money or have limited money that must be allocated to stop death in one form or another. The market does not have a solution for them because they are not participants in the market. Yet they exist as a rather defined part of objective reality.

Privatization is charming and all, but it is not an end all, be all to the ills of mankind.

beepboopbeep··on The Billionaire Behind Efforts to Kill the U.S. Postal Service [pdf]
Yes but ideological means tt's a systemic crippling of government pillars in order to collapse the federal government or otherwise render it inept.
beepboopbeep··on Teachers are ready to quit rather than put their lives at risk
There is no excuse for this behavior from politicians and the public at large. This is selfish ignorance of the utmost degree.

It is, at face value, ridiculous to even think of re-opening schools. The real story is the total and complete abdication of their duties by elected politicians. Faced with a tough choice, they'd rather let people die and systems collapse then take responsibility. Despite watching this unfold in the news and social media for months, these people chose to ignore it and shrug or, as we've seen with kemp, purposefully stop other governments from enacting policies, and now thousands will die.

Why these politicians haven't been dragged out into the street is beyond me. We are going to soar clean over 200,000 people dead in no time-- many of which were preventable.

Just imagine-- if a contractor's shoddy work resulted in 3 people being killed, they'd be hauled into court on gross negligence charges. Yet...politicians are being given a pass. That's not ok.

beepboopbeep··on MIT and Harvard file suit against new ICE regulations
I firmly believe this is being done to damage the reputation of the USA as an immigrant friendly country in order to induce a major brain drain while also stemming the flow of Chinese students away from the mainland.
