beeboop··on Apple kills plans to scan for CSAM in iCloud
He knows they can't do it server-side with E2E. That's his point. Apple can scan my encrypted files all they want.
beeboop··on Apple introduces end-to-end encryption for backups
Someone mentioned here but I didn't confirm that Apple is stopping the CSAM scanning. It makes sense because there's nothing they could reasonably do even if they found matching hashes. It seems unlikely they'd report these findings to the police if there's no manual ability to review the contents first.
beeboop··on Apple introduces end-to-end encryption for backups
I think this is less of an issue than you might think - if they're going to decrypt for law enforcement then it will become painfully obvious there's a backdoor literally the first time evidence is brought to a court that shouldn't have been available without a decryption.
beeboop··on Neuralink faces federal probe, employee backlash over animal tests
I am not denying that. I am saying it's not comparable to human trauma. This whole discussion is ridiculous because it hinges on the idea that artificial insemination is traumatic for animals when I would be really hard pressed to believe that when it's done correctly.
beeboop··on Neuralink faces federal probe, employee backlash over animal tests
Tim Cook doesn't have the entirety of the oil industry, the automotive industry, the power industry, the aerospace industry, (formerly) the payment processing and banking industry, and now the medical industry standing to lose trillions of dollars from stuff that he's doing. Tom Cook's scope and influence is also massively smaller than Elon's and tremendously lower stakes.
beeboop··on Neuralink faces federal probe, employee backlash over animal tests
"the same way humans do"

because they aren't humans.

And yes I feel the same way about artificial insemination on dogs as I do on cows. It is a quick, instantaneous, and painless process that I cannot imagine any animal would think about twice when done properly.

beeboop··on Neuralink faces federal probe, employee backlash over animal tests
Conveniently left out the qualifier immediately following: "the same way humans do"

We absolutely know for a fact that animals don't experience trauma the same way and to the same severity as humans. They're literally incapable of human level emotional harm.

> What’s the value proposition here? Who even needs their supposed products?

Are you joking? Have you spent literally any amount of time reading about Neuralink and what they're aiming to do in their first phase of work? Literally millions of people with a wide variety of physical disabilities could have their lives radically changed with this technology.

beeboop··on Neuralink faces federal probe, employee backlash over animal tests
Do you refuse any sort of medical treatment or drug that was tested on an animal without sensitivity? Do you refuse to use or consume anything tested on lab mice, which are subjected to horrific experiments (by human standards) by the millions every year?
beeboop··on Neuralink faces federal probe, employee backlash over animal tests
I think "rape" is a bit of a hyperbole here. Yes, the cow is penetrated without consent, but the same is done all the time for rectal exams on all sorts of animals, including cows. Cows don't face trauma and PTSD and emotional harm from this penetration the same way humans do and to compare it to rape is ridiculous.
beeboop··on Neuralink faces federal probe, employee backlash over animal tests
I doubt it's Twitter specific - it's just people who don't like Elon or aim to profit off making him fail.
beeboop··on Neuralink faces federal probe, employee backlash over animal tests
I think it's less about government alignment and more about vested interest alignment. There are a lot of people who want Elon to fail in everything he does and a lot of them have a lot of power and influence to help make it happen.
beeboop··on PFC bans are going to change waterproof garments
They destroy roads
beeboop··on I’m thrilled to announce that nothing is going on with me
Yes. We shouldn’t be defined by success. We have one life and should enjoy it as much as possible. You don’t take any of that growth with you to the grave.
beeboop··on Twitter has fired more software engineers
It’s cool that you’re wishing a product fails in a way that could kill people
beeboop··on The world is run by people no smarter than you
lol at calling twitter a failure after one week
beeboop··on I’m the nurse who called 911 for help with staffing
Let's not result to hyperbole. 99%+ of nurses quitting had absolutely nothing with threats of violence from antivaxxers.
beeboop··on I’m the nurse who called 911 for help with staffing
To be fair people in the waiting room aren't under the care/responsibility of the hospital. It's a public area.
beeboop··on Gundam and anime replace rampant politics in Japanese Twitter Trends
Does this mean that the US was interfering with elections in Japan?
beeboop··on Accidental Google Pixel Lock Screen Bypass
It's entirely possible it came from a channel that wasn't eligible, or from a google employee, or own of their own security testers, etc.
beeboop··on Accidental Google Pixel Lock Screen Bypass
Then they would have done this before the sorta-threat of his own disclosure date.
beeboop··on So long and thanks for all the bits
I researched this a bit and based on other sources the issue was accidentally putting the landing gear into the up position when meaning to put the flaps up. Presumably this would happen while coming to a stop on the runway? I have maybe noticed modern airliners do raise their flaps before fully completing braking? Not sure if I'm just making that up. I have barely any flight training but if I recall the main purpose of raising flaps quickly is to lessen the effects of wind from the environment and other aircraft from pushing you around. But the B17 is rather large. I don't know. All speculation.
beeboop··on Redfin cuts 13% of staff, shuts down home-flipping business
> Sure, you _could_ waste all your money on villainous anticompetitive practices

History shows time and time again that anticompetitive practices are wildly profitable.

beeboop··on Redfin cuts 13% of staff, shuts down home-flipping business
You can't just view Meta profits in their income statement in isolation. Profitability from the owners' perspective is very largely impacted by the stock price, which has plummeted. From an owner's perspective it makes sense to shore up losses when you're "losing" money (even if unrealized) in other ways.

That said I'm not defending Meta and wish they became employee owned or that capitalism in general would go away.

beeboop··on Meta lays off 11,000 people
There are other people commenting saying it was much lighter than expected and light compared to other cuts
beeboop··on Why are glasses so expensive? The industry prefers to keep that blurry (2019)
> Capitalism stops working when monopolies take over markets.

It is an inherit property of capitalism that it works towards this goal. There are forms of capitalism that exert more regulatory influence to help prevent this, but the way capitalism works is that it constantly tries to erode regulation and trend towards monopolies. We see this constantly and nonstop in real life.

beeboop··on The most unethical thing I was asked to build while working at Twitter in 2015
That is fair and I wasn't aware of the distinction. Thanks.
beeboop··on My full statement regarding DOOM Eternal
It's sad any time I see fellow proletariat or PMC doing free work for billion dollar companies and to the detriment of other people just trying to make a living.
beeboop··on My full statement regarding DOOM Eternal
He had a lot at stake a lot of incentives to work something out with them. Not everyone can afford to just hire lawyers immediately and only talk through lawyers and burn bridges even further than they're already burned.
beeboop··on Blind: Meta's office to be closed on Wed – 15% layoff (5% Eng 50% recruiting)
It's interesting how much more people find Twitter to not be useless/bad when literally nothing of material value has changed.
