beaudeal··on Why do good ideas come to us when they do?
really interesting article from the psychology perspective, although what id really like to know is what percentage of new ideas (yes i know, different from insights) are developed in the shower...i'm guessing its fairly high
beaudeal··on Why S3 went down
i agree with mixmax in that i really appreciate them being open and forthcoming about the problems, and giving detailed explainations -- on the flipside, im wondering what the outage will do to potential customers and those who are currently using the service...its a bit scary to think that they are hosting some very serious businesses and everyone went down for many hours
beaudeal··on Randy Pausch, noted CMU prof, succumbs to cancer
professor pausch was a great man and i was deeply moved by watching his lectures and he will be missed. granted, i only knew anything about him because of his last lecture, but my life has been made richer because of the things that he has done. thank you, randy.
beaudeal··on You don't have to sell your company to have financial security
i think its great that theres all of this discussion over something such as business models -- in this age of technology i feel its often something overlooked -- but in my opinion, they are both valid, it just depends on what you're going for. if dhh is happy working 4 days a week on 37signals and earning the money that he is, and he wouldnt rather be doing something else, than great for him! if his interest were exhausted, and he were still doing that, then i would say why not sell? for me personally i could not be happier than working on my current project, because it is what i am most passionate about. however, with that being said, for the right price it would be crazy not to sell. not only could you continue to work on it afterward, but if something else came along more interesting you would have the opportunity to pursue it. i just dont think this is as cut and dry as dhh wants to make it seem, and i really agree with the clarifications that paul made in his first comment.
beaudeal··on Scrabulous Now Officially Getting Sued
being a big fan of scrabble, id hate to see scrabulous go away (although admittedly i haven't tried out the official scrabble game yet). however, what i don't understand is why these guys didn't sell to hasbro when they had the opportunity a long time ago?? granted, they may very well be safe from indian courts, and have no u.s. assets, but from what i understand facebook will probably end up taking down the application and they will be left out in the cold.
beaudeal··on Ask YC: "Rock Star" Job Titles
i completely agree that you should probably avoid these places... at that point the company is trying too hard to be cool and therefore they are inherently uncool (to me at least) - not to mention, this probably reflects on the project / product they're building and who wants part of something that isn't awesome??

the other thing about 'rock star' and 'code ninja' that particularly turns me off is that it reminds me of that guy from payperpost who is annoying... i would really hate working for that guy, and in the few times i've seen him he never fails to say something like that...

one last thing i'll add is that i saw a job posting a grockit the other day and thought it was pretty interesting...while i wasn't enamored with their 'agile development practices' the way they probably want developers to be, i really liked their openness about what they offer in terms of comfort, health, and fun. very straightforward and very honest, which is really what i'd be looking for.

beaudeal··on Four Reasons Most Startups Fail (And How Yours Can Succeed)
yea i agree, but i still like that he's stressing not to take too much money too early - i think this is one of the things people tend to underestimate in terms of possible company-killers
beaudeal··on Locksmiths Pissed Off At Geeks For Letting Out The Secret: Lockpicking Is Easy
i suppose its good that this is staying within geek culture as opposed to spreading amongst high school students or something -- imagine if they all saw that youtube video on how to pick a masterlock with a soda can??
beaudeal··on Three vulnerabilities every web application developer should know about
i enjoyed the talk - thanks for the post!
beaudeal··on Using blank slates to your advantage
this is a very interesting article and i think a great approach to design. sometimes the simplest approach is the best solution (ie. 3rd grade level sharpie marker arrow sketch) because its something that everyone can understand.
