beatthatflight··on The Ur-Quan Masters: Open-source remake of Star Control II
*20. Started in 2002. Made me panic at my age for a moment ;)

edit: oh SC2 is 30, you may have been meaning. My bad.

beatthatflight··on Tell HN: X (Twitter) Is Down
Seems fine (working) for me. Although agree re the certificate.
beatthatflight··on Foxconn's promise to invest $10B in Wisconsin is now a distant memory
Am on DnD, will try Underunderstood, thanks!
beatthatflight··on Foxconn's promise to invest $10B in Wisconsin is now a distant memory
Indeed, have subscribed. It's good but still, I miss the old format and team.

Far out that podcast was a great show. I miss it so much.
beatthatflight··on Study: Carbon offsets aren’t doing their job, overstate impact
Odd. Thanks though, appreciate hunting down the link for me!

Am I going blind? I can't find your quotes in the article linked?
beatthatflight··on A study on robustness and reliability of large language model code generation
I've used it for performance boosts. It's not perfect, but if I paste a method (my own code) and say 'rewrite in fewer lines' to simplify, or 'rewrite to run faster', I've been in awe at what it comes up with that hadn't occured to me. Tricks in python I wasn't aware of, or hadn't considered using a different datastructure that can be searched faster (for some reason my brain always defaults to lists, when a set may be better, for example). It absolutely makes errors though, so unit tests are critical, but I've got code running so much faster as a result.

Only have to provide all your personal details...again? ;)

yup, working for me in 115.0
beatthatflight··on Open source hospital price database
Been in ER in the UK, Aus and NZ. Never paid a cent. And that's included overnight stays, drugs, ICU, 2 weeks ward stay, cardioversions and more. Yay for free healthcare.
beatthatflight··on Unlighthouse: Like Lighthouse, but it scans every single page
haha, go the ozbargainers! :)
beatthatflight··on Unlighthouse: Like Lighthouse, but it scans every single page
Very impressed. Nice UI/UX as well. However, get the occasional "Required traces gatherer did not run", without any explanation as to why/what that infers. A [search] didn't turn up anything particularly obvious.
beatthatflight··on Ask HN: Successful one-person online businesses?
You're very kind, thank you! Glad it was of help!
beatthatflight··on Ask HN: Successful one-person online businesses?
https://beatthatflight.com.au/

Started 5 years ago next month.

Flight/hotel/car rental search, plus deals that I find for Australians.

Running it is actually fairly easy. It started as a deals site, then I added in some whitelabeled software, mailing list, fb page, and frankly it's a numbers game - more visitors = more ads/affiliate revenue.

It's not huge, but it's been interesting at least, and very little in the way of expenses.

beatthatflight··on Even the Pylint codebase uses Ruff
Because of the performance.

See example graph: https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/1309177/212613422-...

For those of us who use pylint and flake8, this is a heaven-sent tool!

beatthatflight··on Ask HN: Those with money-making side projects, how did you come up with the idea?
I was constantly looking for flights. Cheap flights. It was my obsession (I've visited 80 countries pre-covid) and friends came to me for hacks/cheap flights.

So I started a website/blog/newsletter. Then I added a widget to sell flights. Then I integrated a fully fledged flight search tool. Niched on the Australian market. Then I added hotels.

Revenue fell off a Grand Canyon-like cliff when covid struck, obviously, as nobody was flying, but has improved markedly this year.

Site is https://beatthatflight.com.au/

beatthatflight··on Ask HN: How can I further secure my Facebook after two hacks?
just facebook. After the second attempt it appears to have stopped, thankfully.
beatthatflight··on Ask HN: How can I further secure my Facebook after two hacks?
longer than that, that's for sure. And I'd presume FB has rate-per-minute limits of attempts?
beatthatflight··on Show HN: I created a browser automation tool
Update Scanner. I use it a lot to track airline prices/sales.
beatthatflight··on Show HN: I created a browser automation tool
Selenium would do that, in python, no worries.

Alternatively, have a batch script that just runs (Assuming windows) taskkill /f /im firefox.exe which would kill it. Then have firefox startup with no tabs loaded.

beatthatflight··on Asus put out like 40 models of a laptop called the “Eee PC” (2021)
Loved my EeePC and my Asus R101 netbooks. Backpacked all over the world with them, they lasted for hours, could still code on them and edit photos, watch tv episodes and more. I mourn their passing.
beatthatflight··on Ask HN: What are some keywords you track everyday?
"flight sale". I'm constantly looking anyway and doing searches, but if some news outlet is reporting an Aussie-relevant one, I need to hop on that right away.
beatthatflight··on Show HN: Browser extension that spoofs your location data to match your VPN
I use google DNS - surely that's mostly agnostic?

I think I've worked out how tho. They detect VPN/proxies, where there are plenty of libraries to do so.

So I tried creating a VPS in the same city as them last night, used freakin' lynx on a terminal so sans-Javascript, and lo and behold, still detected that I wasn't in their country :/

So I've installed it. I'm tunneling to another country. Vytal says everything is correct for country B. However the site I'm testing posting to still detects that I'm outside their country. And I can't work out how :/
beatthatflight··on World's Greatest Con
Really enjoyed this podcast - his enthusiasm makes for a great story-teller, even if embellishing some of the details at times, he weaves a fantastic narrative.
beatthatflight··on Fire extinguished at Ukraine nuclear power plant, Europe's largest
currently says 03/04/2022 - 03:06, so putting this here for reference Edit: Then saw an update at 03:10 so it is updating
beatthatflight··on I've been getting paid $80k a year for the last 5 years doing no work
this is true. I backpacked around several countries for about 8 months a few years back. Returning to work was...a shock.
