beardyw··on Air Conditioning Is Not a Luxury, It Is a Necessity
I was thinking more of climate change (in) denial.
beardyw··on Air Conditioning Is Not a Luxury, It Is a Necessity
"This article was originally published in The Washington Post"

Pretty much all you need to know in 2026.

beardyw··on What if AI were in charge of public policy and politics?
AI just reflects humanity. There is no reason to expect it to be wiser
beardyw··on Where did all the public bathrooms go?
Yes, where are you going to take a bath, in public.

It's interesting that this subject is awash with euphemisms. At least pissoir is properly descriptive.

beardyw··on NYTimes opinion article proposes default as a way to deal with US National debt
Is this also proposing the public execution of national leaders?
beardyw··on The search for consciousness inside AI
They found something in the way AI uses the model which could be compared to some basic brain functions.

It keeps the dollars coming in.

beardyw··on To become a better writer, read as much as you can
Yes, the difference between humans and LLMs is the small issue that LLMs have no idea what any of it means.
beardyw··on Ask HN: What websites do you visit daily to stay informed?
Use RSS. I have about 100 subscriptions: some dead, many very infrequent, the rest just right. A big advantage is you see a story only once.

For news I browse the BBC and the Guardian. They are too noisy for RSS, though I do take their science and technology feeds.

beardyw··on Would a Hiroshima-scale AI disaster make humanity protect itself? I fear not
I am not a fan of AI but these kinds of articles are just so much nonsense. If the only kind of work you understand is knowledge work it feels like a challenge. But it ignores the fact that much of what humanity does is practical, that AI needs someone to keep the electricity on, and what on earth is the point of AI without humans to consume it's output?
beardyw··on The Milky Way's fastest star could expose our black hole's spin
Ok, thanks, no PhD!
beardyw··on The Milky Way's fastest star could expose our black hole's spin
I don't understand how the spin gets to be measured.
beardyw··on Frustrated GP patients hang up as Yorkshire accent baffles AI receptionist
As soon as you say "Ay up" it should transfer to a real person. Seems like a win to me.
beardyw··on Why I'm Staying Out of the Substack Religion Debate
Sadly you are probably right.

Setting up your own aunt sally and then knocking down isn't that difficult.

beardyw··on Sainsbury's store pauses AI scanning after false shoplifting accusation
Ha, but I did too since this is the 3rd posting of this story.
beardyw··on Show HN: JobEasyApply – AI job auto-applier for LinkedIn, Greenhouse and Lever
Given my latest post, no human may be involved in rejection either.

beardyw··on Dry – Principia Mathematica
I wonder if Kurt Gödel read it?
beardyw··on UK Shared Rural Network roll-out passes key target
Mobile operators sharing resources seems like only a good thing.
beardyw··on I teach calculus at Berkeley. Some of my students can't do middle school math
Not being in the US, what is the qualification for admissions supposed to be. Maybe I missed it. If it's not testing, what is it?
beardyw··on Scientists Identify 3-Minute Exercise Better than 90M one
The full title "Scientists Identify 3-Minute Exercise That May Outperform 90-Minute Workout" has the "perhaps, maybe, who knows" found in the full article. Flim flam and flummery.
beardyw··on Ask HN: Will AI lead to complete human irrelevance?
I think what's missing is the question "What is the point of it?". As humans we tend to assume that money has intrinsic value (it doesn't), that what we do is important (it isn't) etc. What will AI do that has any point other than to make human lives better?
beardyw··on Could a computer scientist build a brain?
Everything is subject to "quantum effects". Not necessarily trying to squeeze superposition and entanglement into a pint pot.
beardyw··on Ask HN: When you sell your company, do you receive the money with a normal wire?
I think traditional banks are a safeguard against money laundering (as in WE did the right thing).
beardyw··on U.S. to tell partners they must pick sides in AI race with China
I thought competition was supposed to be a good thing.
beardyw··on Strait of Hormuz Live Traffic Tracking
That should read "popular beat combo".

beardyw··on Nigel Farage beats slate of fringe candidates in election
Or looking at it another way, if those who voted against him last time had voted at all, we would have Binface in parliament instead.
beardyw··on Facebook ads are so hard to block that uBlock Origin stopped filtering them
You have missed nothing.
beardyw··on Big Tech Wants to Harvest Your Thoughts
This is like putting crocodile clips on a computer running AI to see how it works.

I think this is true for every country, perhaps including the USA.
