beardicus··on The Rise of the Millennial Prenup
The quote you've pulled is referring to the process of negotiating a prenup, not to the marriage itself.
beardicus··on A new $100M fund for women founders of color
Ugh. Almost every comment on this article is gross. What is wrong with you all?

Targeted support of a minority population to correct for an unjust imbalance is a good thing.

beardicus··on How to Make Everything Ourselves: Open Modular Hardware
I really love the aesthetic of all the demo pieces for OpenStructures (mentioned in the article). Unfortunately it seems it didn't really catch on, and is not an active project. Also, I've found that many standard metric parts that could fit in the system are hard to get or expensive here in the US, alas.
beardicus··on Linux Fu: The Great Power of Make
Semi-related, I love this article by Mike Bostock about using Make to capture some design/data workflows: https://bost.ocks.org/mike/make/

I fiddled with this idea and made a Makefile that downloads a book from the Internet Archive, extracts all the illustrations and tweaks them with ImageMagick: https://github.com/beardicus/bk-fig-phillips/blob/master/Mak...

This isn't the smartest Makefile... I've learned a bit since. Regardless, I find it really fun to smoosh a process into a dependency graph frame-of-mind.

Does anybody else have any examples of "non-traditional" uses of Make? Anything beyond compiling code or using it as a straightforward task runner?

beardicus··on DNS Performance compared: CloudFlare 1.1.1.1 x Google 8.8.8.8 x Quad9 x OpenDNS
Queries to my local Spectrum DNS service are 4 times slower than 1.1.1.1, and they redirect you to stupid search pages instead of `NXDOMAIN`. I switched the whole network over this morning.
beardicus··on We Used Broadband Data We Shouldn’t Have
Because the current US govt definition of "broadband" is a minimum of 25mbps down, and most DSL can't achieve those speeds.
beardicus··on G.M. Unveils Its Driverless Cars, Aiming to Lead the Pack
> If the police need to get involved for this every time, they're going to be very busy.

Well, they'll need something to do when speed traps become useless and there are far fewer motor vehicle accidents.

beardicus··on Andy Rubin Takes Leave of Absence Amid Report of ‘Inappropriate Relationship’
Your list of potential outcomes seem to assume that people will mainly be wary of false accusations. Maybe — instead of worrying about this low-probability non-issue — people will simply stop abusing power and harassing subordinates due to the increased likelihood of negative consequences?
beardicus··on PoC||GTFO 0x16 [pdf]

beardicus··on How to build a wireless street lighting system
there's only a tiny microcontroller and radio added per light. the power consumption of this additional technology is on the order of milliamps at 3v. this is minuscule compared to the LEDs themselves.
beardicus··on Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos sold more than $1B worth of stock this week
> I assume that plus whatever regular income tax for his bracket is

No. Capital gains aren't income.

beardicus··on Peer-to-peer social networking with Rotonde and Beaker
Your wall of text would be more effective with some added clarity and organization. I feel like the "they" you refer to is vague and unclear throughout.

If i had to, I'd guess you're referring to Google as "they" at first, then the Dat project, with some Github "they" mixed up in the middle. It's honestly hard to tell.

I'm not sure why you think Dat is "centralized decentralization" and how using it would lead to "big brother" getting your research data. What part of Dat is centralized? This seemingly poorly informed hot-take on Dat leads me to question the other assertions in your screed as well.

beardicus··on GM Apples That Don’t Brown to Reach U.S. Shelves This Fall
Conveniently, nobody talks about mutagenic breeding, or hitting seeds/plants w/ radiation or mutagenic chemicals to see what you get. Surely if selectively inserting well-known genes into plants is risky, mutating plants with completely unknown gene combinations is even more so? Yet, you hear no call to label such foods. Once again we see that pretty much every objection to GMO can also be leveled against other widely-accepted breeding and farming techniques.
beardicus··on Spaces: Scalable Object Storage on DigitalOcean
(DO employee here) It's S3-compatible. Agreed that it's a bit strange in Transmit and other clients to have to first select "S3" when connecting to something else entirely... but that's the world we live in.

Spaces isn't working with Transmit 5 yet. I don't have the technical details, but it's a known issue that's being worked on. I'll write a Transmit 5 tutorial as soon as it works.

beardicus··on A Frameless Geodesic Dome (2013)
Yeah, 1.5" of blue board is probably not sufficient. I imagine carving 4" blocks of foam to fit tightly together would be more rigid and weatherproof, but cutting all those angles just right is difficult.
beardicus··on A Frameless Geodesic Dome (2013)
> This thing has no insulation

It is literally made of insulation. You didn't read the article.

beardicus··on Archiveteam are backing up SoundCloud
Archive Team is not the Internet Archive, and the above quote is clearly opinion.
beardicus··on Archiveteam are backing up SoundCloud
Archiveteam exists mostly because your suggested course of action rarely works.
beardicus··on EFF's Letter to Zillow on Behalf of McMansion Hell [pdf]
Wrong. EFF has gone after both Facebook and Google. Specifically, they filed an FTC complaint against Google claiming privacy violations, and they defended a client against a CFAA lawsuit from Facebook. This took 30 seconds to look up. I'm sure there's more examples, but I can't be arsed.
beardicus··on Cloud Firewalls
The firewalls are stateful, with connection tracking.
beardicus··on Cloud Firewalls
It's possible you're assuming the firewalls have more rule types than they actually do. Basically these firewalls default to dropping all packets, and any rules you add are to accept a port or port range. Adding such rules together is simple and doesn't depend on order.
beardicus··on Cloud Firewalls
(DO employee here)

The intro article answers many of these questions (and more): https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/an-introduc...

> How many firewalls can a single user create, and how many rules can be in each firewall?

100 firewalls, 50 rules per firewall

> How is the order of multiple firewalls applied to the same droplet determined?

The rules are all added together and applied at the same priority. Order doesn't matter.

> Where is there logging to show when a rule matched?

No logging is available.

> Is there any future plan to support REJECTing packets rather than only DROPing?

No plans for this.

> Will the user interface warn the user when they are about to block all traffic (including ssh) to a droplet?

There are no footgun warnings, no.

Let me know if you have more questions... thanks!

beardicus··on Show HN: Early-stage Yahoo Pipes spiritual successor
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Node-RED yet: http://nodered.org/

Node.js-based with a Pipes-like visual wiring interface. It's quite popular with the Raspberry Pi and Arduino crowd. Lot's of input and output plugins, and you can drop into Node scripting when necessary. I quite like it.

beardicus··on “Millennial savages me on Glassdoor for giving constructive feedback”
Lost me at "millennial". How can people jump on the millennial-hating train and not see it as the "kids these days" "get off my lawn" horseshit that it really is?

The author could use a good editor.

beardicus··on My township calls my lawn ‘a nuisance’ (2015)
Semi-related to the article: how many people click 'like' on facebook 'save the bees' articles in the morning, then poison their dandelions in the afternoon? Here's the easiest/laziest thing you can do to 'save the bees': when dandelions are out in the spring, maybe take a one week break from mowing them down... and don't spray them with weed killer.

Dandelions are some of the first food available to bees in the spring after a long hard winter of shivering. Please help them thrive!

beardicus··on Show HN: A Pomodoro app for your menubar/tray
> I feel bad for folks using Electron.

Me too, so I've started down voting such comments. At this point they are off topic and distract from actual useful feedback.

OP: your app looks pretty nice. I'd suggest offering the choice of a more muted tray icon (dark on light, and light on dark).

beardicus··on Show HN: Personal finance with 'hledger' in Emacs
Oooh. Thanks for that head's up. I thought hledger has the only web ui for ledger, and it is lacking. fava looks pretty nice, and bonus for python.
beardicus··on Launch HN: Peer5 (YC W17) – Serverless CDN
"Why the hell is Chrome uploading and downloading so much data?"

* looks through open tabs *

"Oh."

Though most people would never notice, I feel like with developers (the folks who will implement this on their sites) you may have a tough time convincing them this is safe and ethical. I suggest being up front about this issue and suggesting disclosure/consent strategies to any of your customers (and perhaps doing research and surveys to prove that nobody really minds this use of their bandwidth).

Also, it's kinda weird that you've appropriated the HTML 5 logo into your own. That's probably within the logo's Creative Commons license, but I don't see where you've given attribution as required by said license.

Slick page though, and a good informative site... I don't mean to be a downer. Good luck!

beardicus··on Internet Archive’s Trump Archive Launches Today
Lessig has nothing to do with the Internet Archive, as far as I'm aware.
beardicus··on Hyper 1.0.0
I tried hyper a week or two ago. It's fun and nice... zippy enough in everyday use and fairly pretty. But I had problems pasting commands into it, and it seems incapable of remembering multi-window layouts between sessions.

But, everybody has their own list of must-haves and deal-breakers. I'm sure hyper 1.0.0 does enough for a significant number of people out there. Congrats to the team.
