beams··on Exercise can be nearly as effective as therapy for depression
This sounds utterly horrific but I'm glad you're enjoying it.
beams··on One woman's struggle to remove all traces of videotaped sexual assault
You’re embarrassing yourself with these posts...
beams··on Is that ship still stuck?
Is it strange to anyone that we load ships to this capacity? Is this the standard procedure?

I’m essentially wondering why this is more cost-effective than building more, smaller ships.

beams··on Oracle Cloud is unreachable
Cache invalidation, naming things, and a globally distributed system. What could go wrong?
beams··on Four times I felt discriminated against for being a female developer
Appreciate the write up with specific examples. I haven’t been discriminated against at work (that I’m aware of) and try very, very hard to avoid it (though I’m sure I have failed unknowingly). This helps remind me of how it can happen whether intentional or not.
beams··on Graphtage: A semantic diff utility for JSON, HTML, YAML, CSV, etc
Cool I will definitely try this. Thank you
beams··on Heap-based buffer overflow in Sudo
Stopped reading your comment after the first sentence because that’s all I needed to know.
beams··on SolarWinds hackers were able to access Microsoft source code
Rewriting it in C++ to magically solve problems. Good job, engineer.
beams··on Setting up a WireGuard client with routing domains on OpenBSD
If you’re willing to read documentation, OpenBSD is best-in-class for a secure, stable home router. The interfaces (configuration, CLI) are extremely simple and the man pages top notch.
beams··on SpaceX Starlink has some hiccups as expected, but users are impressed
Why TCP over UDP? The whole point of TCP is retransmission. What did you gain by encapsulating this way?
beams··on Linux – A Survival Guide for Beginners
If you’re intimidated by man pages, just be aware they vary in complexity and readability along with the tool they describe. I continue to check them first, and if they’re tl;dr, there is probably a tool that is more simple and suited for your use case. Reading (and searching) them becomes easier over time. Shameless plug for OpenBSD, which has the best man pages I’ve seen thus far.
beams··on Jira on premises end of life starts feb 2021
Can anyone explain why you use on prem Jira over the managed/cloud version?
beams··on John Gray: 'What can we learn from cats? Don't live in an imagined future'
You say you’d decline 5m years of life. But have you been in love? How would your answer change if he/she was ready to live 5m years with you?
beams··on Security by obscurity is underrated
Sure, it adds a little bit of “security” like the camouflage on tank example, or the prey jumping. Those examples are poor however, because — unlike changing default ports, adding knocking, obfuscating code - these examples are extremely low maintenance/cheap, and come with essentially no downside.

What’s missing here is the discussion of tradeoffs. I fail to see how e.g., requiring port knocking adds enough security to justify the annoyance. Changing the default port, maybe, but given how easily it’s detected anyway, the cons still outweigh the pros IMO.

beams··on How I operated as a staff engineer at Heroku
Great questions and answers. Admittedly, I can’t help but feel there aren’t very many pain points mentioned, which makes me ask what’s being left out.

Additionally, how often was coding actually involved in this role? I hear this claim often but in my experience it’s rare. One-line fixes don’t count. Specifically, what projects were you a code contributor to?
