beAbU··on A Kantian Critique of "Sorry" by Justin Bieber
Even more fun anecdote, barely related.

In a recent South Africa vs England rugby match, an accusation of racism was levied against an SA player because he directed the phrase "white cunt" to one of the English players.

If Afrikaans, the word "kant" (pronounced 'cunt') means "side". "Wit" is "white".

So when he said "wit kant" he really meant "white side". England traditionally wears white livery, South Africa wears green. So it was the "wit kant" vs the "groen kant".

Hilarity and much confusion ensued for a while after that accusation!

beAbU··on Why does Opus 5 feel worse to work with?
It's the same way how every AI generated poster looks exactly the same. As if there is a single underlying prompt that describes the template of the poster/long-form article, and it does not dare deviate from that.
beAbU··on Xbox goes down. You can't play games you own on disc
In Xbox's defence, pretty seamless. I am signed into my xbox account, which is a Microsoft account. When launcing a game all that account auth bullshit is taken care of.

My wife has her own account, and our accounts are bound to our controllers. When you press the xbox button you are immediately signed into your profile, and it's instant. When she launches a game with her controller, she sees her saves and vice versa for me. With Baldur's Gate 3 it even keeps all her mods separate from my mod-free setup.

Some game publishers (activision, ubisoft et al) require their own accounts, and that's usually also taken care of automatically. The xbox goes and sets up a profile on that publisher's system on first game launch.

How can you put Ryanair and BMW in the same category?

Ryanair's whole shtick is "we'll treat you like cattle in a truck, and you'll be grateful you only paid €20 for the experience". I feel that anyone who is outraged by their nickel-and-diming doesn't really understand what Ryanair is about.

If I paid €200 for a flight from Dublin to Amsterdam, and they forced me to watch ads on the seatback screen and charged me to use the loo, then I'll be rightfully upset. But €50 for Ryanair? Where do I sign up for the €20 standing-only tickets?

beAbU··on Using ThinkPad T480 as a mobile phone
There was an old version of firmware that would brick the thunderbolt port. Something about every connect/disconnect cycle would write tons to the port's eeprom eventually bricking it.

I don't think there is a fix, it's more a case of if your T480 still works, get a newer firmware installed asap.

beAbU··on The Corporate Creep of Plex: Why it may be time to move to Jellyfin
Smart TV's are famously a massive privacy and data theft trojan horse.

Connecting your tv to the internet is quite frankly insane.

beAbU··on The Corporate Creep of Plex: Why it may be time to move to Jellyfin
I started with XBMC, with the media library on the same machine as XBMC. Then I developed a need to have acces to my library on different devices. After faffing about with samba shares and whatnot I discovered Plex. I started using that as a free user, and was very impressed and happy. 3-4 years into that journey I was considering buying a lifetime pass.

At some point their web client felt like it was abandoned, because they kept on releasing apps for a bunch of niche devices and for VR. I was unsure if my subscription was going to make my experience any better.

Eventually I discovered Emby, trialled it for a couple of months alongside Plex (same XBMC core, so the same library naming convention and folder structure). After that I decided to get the subscription for Emby. Their server is solid, the web client is solid, and their android clients are solid. Happy camper since then!

Why on gods green earth would you connect your tv to the internet, let alone install anything on it??
beAbU··on The Corporate Creep of Plex: Why it may be time to move to Jellyfin
I've been a paying Emby user for close to ten years, ever since plex tried to launch a VR player or some shit, while there were still critical bugs in the player for web and other devices.

Emby just works, it's players are great, and issues actually get fixed. I know it's a closed source fork of XBMC, I know that's controversial, but the product itself is just so good.

beAbU··on Tesla Balance Bike
1. I think the point is they learn the more difficult skill first, which is balancing. It's low enough to the ground that the kid can balance with their feet, but they will naturally start picking up their feet when they get some momentum and speed going. I think it's a much less stressful way to learn riding a bike compared to knowing mommy-or-daddy-might-let-go-and-I-will-fall school of training.

2. A very quick google search got me this¹. More than half the balance bikes on there have brakes. I've seen similar on other bike websites. I agree it's irresponsible to not have brakes, especially for the bigger kid models.

I have a 7 month old now. I want to get her on a balance bike before the end of the year, or maybe start with a trike. Exclusively indoors, or under very strict supervision from me if we are anywhere outside. As soon as she's big enough, she'll get the smallest "big" bike where I have removed the pedals, but we have the front and back brakes present. Then she'll continue balance-biking on there till she's ready for the pedals.

beAbU··on Passkeys were invented by engineers with zero understanding of consumer brain
I store my passkeys in Bitwarden. Can you not do the same in LastPass?
beAbU··on Tesla Balance Bike
You can start a kid on a balance bike at like 9 months. There are no pedal bikes with training wheels that's small enough for a 9 month old.

No responsible parent will allow a child on a balance bike (or one with training wheels) in any scenario where they'll 'endanger' anything.

Balance bikes teach you to ride a bike (maintain balance while steering). Training wheels teach you to pedal a bike.

Learning balancing and steering first, and then learning to actually cycle the pedals is the right order of events I think.

No need for any technical analysis. Space-based DC's claim solve one problem: backlash and resistance against construction from local communities.

Yet, the DCs here on earth have other problems such as high energy consumption needing on-prem gas turbines and requiring large quantities of water for cooling requirements.

I'm looking forward to a terrestrial DC that solves all these issues: it's completely self contained and self sustaining requiring very little maintenance, no external power and self contained waterless cooling. Once we have that then we can ask how we can package up this building and put it in the sea. And then when we've had enough of that, we can put them in space.

beAbU··on LinkedIn is a cesspool of scammers and identity theft
Do you think LI's problem is innate to the platform, or it's users? How will an alternative professional social network make itself immune to the scourge of online 'business networking'?

I honestly believe the problem is inseparable from the social network itself. Either you have a space where people can connect and find jobs and nothing more, and you'll have zero engagement and no way to really fund the platform. Or you allow actual social networking (i.e. public posts) and then open yourself up for lots of engagement, and all the associated cancer that comes with that.

beAbU··on Australian energy retailers must provide three hours of free daytime electricity
An ev charging at 7kw will consume 21 of the 24kWh. Now, if you don't drive massive distances every day then this might not be the best deal, but I can see how this might be worth it for someone commuting 200km a day for example. Taxi drivers, and the like will also probably benefit.

Tesla? You serious?

The same tesla tha cancelled the model 2, and subsequently they don't have anything to offer the affordable-urban-transporter market? The same tesla that's going all in on robotics and AI and somewhat forgetting about their car maker heritage?

You comment is very American centric. Kia and Hyundai is fucking smashing it in Europe at the moment, and the likes of Renault is coming out with seriously good and seriously competitive offers.
