Director of Technology for Refund Retriever. Fancy title, but I'm just the Chief Nerd that runs code, architecture, ops, etc... Used most languages the serve up web traffic since 1999, but mostly Ruby, Javascript, and ColdFusion/CFML.

Whatever opinions I express here are mine alone, and don't reflect those of my employer.

My HN username is how you'll find me pretty much everywhere else.

bdcravens··on Coding is not solved
I don't think it's a matter of justifying any evil, so long as the argument is made in good faith. Pushing the idea of bad code emerging from AI isn't a good faith argument.
bdcravens··on Flock Wants the Most Detailed Map of Its Surveillance Cameras Taken Offline
The technology is only half of the puzzle; the other half is the availability of the data. For example, many toll roads use license plate readers. Police cruisers may also read a license plate.

Flock the technology would be less of a problem if it had reasonable guards around access, such as requiring search warrants for each query, in each jurisdiction the results touch.

> There's a cult of speed uber alles

That cult was well established prior to LLMs

bdcravens··on Coding is not solved
> I agree, I think this false dichotomy between using LLMs and caring about quality/reliability needs to stop.

It's not just a false dichotomy, it's intellectual dishonesty. It wasn't that long that conversations about code quality, technical debt, etc were on the front page of HN on the regular. Whether it was coding bootcamp grads who had just enough confidence to be dangerous, "just ship it!" cargo culters, or the product of management breathing down the necks of otherwise good developers, there's plenty of "human slop" running in production across servers worldwide.

Nor does writing it.

bdcravens··on Claude Status – Elevated errors for multiple models
Because they are upvoted by readers.

Why are Apple product announcements upvoted? We've known about those changes for months, and they release on a predictable cadence.

Why did we ever care about San Francisco news? Most HNers aren't in SF, California, and many aren't even in the US.

etc

OpenClaw isn't the target anymore, Hermes is. It may have been the first, in the same sense that new social networks were often referred to as Facebook-clones, not Myspace (or Friendster) clones.
bdcravens··on 9 Ads per Minute: FIFA Cup 26 – "the price of the beautiful game"
Yes, but FIFA's attempt to control every aspect of it was suffocating. I've never seen an event where stadiums had to change their name for an event. (Since the companies that paid for those naming rights hadn't paid FIFA)
bdcravens··on Microsoft director: AI scraping 'the largest theft of labor in human history'
Presumably someone was paid when the content was created. So it's not really the labor that's being stolen, but the future value of the deliverable.

I'm pretty sure any of the eras of slavery throughout human history is more of an actual theft of labor.

bdcravens··on My temporary PHP fix from 2014 has nearly 20M installs. Today I'm deprecating it
In 2009, I started a project, was given a CSV, and in testing the import I created a quick table called "{businessDomain}Temp". Yes, that table is still there, still has the same name, and is load bearing (not in the LLM meme sense, but the business depends on it). Yes, I'm been promising myself I'll fix it one day for just as long.
bdcravens··on We got admin access to Baseten's production GitHub
If you automatically delete everything after the statutory retention period, you're fine. If you conditionally do so, that's when you have explaining to do.
bdcravens··on We got admin access to Baseten's production GitHub
Many companies only keep logs as long as they're legally required to. It can't be discoverable if it doesn't exist ...
bdcravens··on Ask HN: Can we please limit the AI news flood?
AI is on the front page because those articles are upvoted. There have always been hot topics that dominated the feed in the past: Apple product releases, Steve Jobs's passing, cryptocurrency, US-only news, San Francisco-only news, coding bootcamps, NPM drama of the week, etc.
bdcravens··on Forgejo <=16.0.3 Critical RCE
Why can't you use an LLM to find vulnerabilities and then hand-code the fix? You don't even have to clean-room implement it; let the LLM write the code, and then reimplement, doing what you can to de-LLM-ify it.
bdcravens··on Shopify acquires Tailwind
I don't want to diminish the work that any developers do, but a headcount of 10 seems high to me. (Unless some of those are simply "support engineers" who do nothing but support paying customers, but that would go up and down with revenue)
bdcravens··on Shopify acquires Tailwind
"nor should it be" is connected to "being worth millions". It's not that it isn't worth money, but it's more of a lifestyle business than the sort of thing that will drive a tech company with employees, marketing, and conference budgets.
bdcravens··on Shopify acquires Tailwind
I think many of the purchases of Tailwind UI were basically donations with extra steps. Many, myself included, wanted to support their work. The prebuilt components were nice, but you can find open source components and/or commercial ones on places like ThemeForest for about $20.
bdcravens··on The car industry A/B tested selling a car with and without CarPlay
According to their MFi page, there may be a royalty, as Apple says that information is covered by NDA. (including the authentication coprocessors required for CarPlay)

"What is the royalty associated with MFi accessories? This information is only available under NDA. You will be able to review this information once your application for the MFi License has been approved."

bdcravens··on The car industry A/B tested selling a car with and without CarPlay
I own an EV6 and I definitely feel like Kia/Hyundia, especially their EVs, is essentially a different company than the one putting out easily hotwired and unreliable cars from just a few years ago.
bdcravens··on The car industry A/B tested selling a car with and without CarPlay
They are the same platform, but of course consumers don't buy platforms, they buy brands.
bdcravens··on The car industry A/B tested selling a car with and without CarPlay
Even though the Prologue is based on the Blazer platform, most people don't consider that, with the brand carrying more weight.

Secondly, EV purchasers have different criteria, like range. After all, the best selling EV brand and model in America has never had CarPlay but has the trust of buyers (and would probably have more if the founder wasn't so polarizing).

While it's true he may not "do the work" and relies on those he's hired, the same is true of the Mark Cubans of the world.

bdcravens··on Omarchy: Any User Process Can Escalate to Root
The old human nature tendency of "Just ship it!" and the desire to move on to the next shiny thing on our wishlist doesn't go away with AI. If it anything, it makes it worse.
bdcravens··on Hacking IKEA Furniture
I couldn't find any kind of an enclosure that fits the TidyCat Breeze XL litter box. The toy box drawer (Smastad) was big enough, so I cut an entry hole on one side, and a hole on the back side for removing the pad insert.
bdcravens··on Show HN: Typebase – A single-folder back end you write in TypeScript
To be honest, the use of AI in your marketing doesn't bother me. But paired with the fact that you have a newish HN account with no comments ever, and no comments on your own "Show HN" in response to others, doesn't put off strong trust signals.
