bcraven··on Scientists ejected from diabetes conference for distributing journal reprints
I hear this argument, but can't believe the content filters are so crap they can't detect simple letter replacements like that.
bcraven··on Sony Launches Bravia 9 II and Bravia 7 II with 'True RGB'
And then my wife can't tell the difference between 576p and 2160p, so I guess everyone is different.
bcraven··on Steam Deck OLED is back in stock, with a price increase for both models
That sounds infinitely less portable

bcraven··on Mozilla to UK regulators: VPNs are essential privacy and security tools
Take it off them when they're not in school.
bcraven··on London Police Deploy Facial Recognition at Protest for First Time
"Dozens of officers injured as up to 150,000 join Tommy Robinson rally"

Assistant Commissioner Matt Twist said officers had "policed without fear or favour", knowing it would be challenging.

"There is no doubt that many came to exercise their lawful right to protest, but there were many who came intent on violence."

Assistant Commissioner Twist said officers had suffered broken teeth, concussion, a prolapsed disc, a head injury and a possible broken nose.

bcraven··on Show HN: Free tool to mark points and polygon regions
Back in my day we used a tape measure and some maths.

Or just bought the longer version.

bcraven··on Discovering hard disk physical geometry through microbenchmarking (2019)
"on HN" was what I mentally added to that comment.

I'd rather see articles like this know when the latest OpenAI release was and well it can draw a pelican.

bcraven··on Six years perfecting maps on watchOS
I appreciate this comes from an outside perspective as I've not heard of this before, but "Pedometer++ 8" sounds like "Dissertation_final_final_v8.docx" to me.
bcraven··on Why Not Venus?
This site suggests it's just a remap:

The Venera panoramas are spherical projections. They can be remapped to perspective projections and overlayed (using Adobe Photoshop CS2) to produce views that give a better subjective impression of the Venusian surface

bcraven··on The Neon King of New Orleans
And https://www.neonworkshops.com/ of you're further north (Wakefield).

They even run courses in creating your own pieces.

bcraven··on The Harvard Library Passport
The trope of HN comments determining whether an article was written by AI is becoming extremely tiresome.
bcraven··on Scientists Figured Out How Eels Reproduce (2022)
This is a good video on that medieval belief:

bcraven··on Delve removed from Y Combinator
I think that's the point - they have been removed.

bcraven··on Butterfly-collecting: The history of an insult (2017)
In my field we often refer to palaeontology as "just stamp collecting".
bcraven··on Zelensky says allies asked him to scale back attacks on Russian energy
I do not trust that graph in your example
bcraven··on Chicago artist creates tourism posters for city's neighborhoods
Looks like this is the reference, for anyone else wondering.

bcraven··on Scientists Just Broke the Solar Power Limit Everyone Thought Was Absolute
I often think this at first when I see such numbers, but then remember that condensing boilers have efficiencies over 100% so then I'm not sure.
bcraven··on NASA targets Artemis II crewed moon mission for April 1 launch
As it's currently March, April seems very close to me. I didn't know there was a moon flight planned so this is a great headline to me.
bcraven··on Seurat Most Famous for Paris Park Painting Yet Half His Paintings Were Seascapes
It links to it, but no the article is about his seascapes.
bcraven··on AMD will bring its “Ryzen AI” processors to standard desktop PCs for first time
Presumably that's why the subheading is:

>First wave of Ryzen AI desktop CPUs targets business PCs rather than DIYers.

bcraven··on Ooh.directory: a place to find good blogs that interest you
It feels like we're _so_ close to having StumbleUpon back.
bcraven··on AI agent opens a PR write a blogpost to shames the maintainer who closes it

bcraven··on Hard-braking events as indicators of road segment crash risk
These comments make me grateful that we have the concept of 'lane discipline' in the UK. It's rare to see the 'fastest' lane be anything other than the outside one. Otherwise we keep left and out of the way.

bcraven··on Microsoft open-sources LiteBox, a security-focused library OS
Something similar, or indeed, exactly the same:

bcraven··on UK government launches fuel forecourt price API
None of these are local news articles, in fact they are all from a different continent.

A local article that I did find was from a BP petrol station in Liverpool, so I'm not sure this can be isolated to 'mom-and-pop' outfits (something we don't really have over here anyway).
