bcowcher··on Everything You Know About Fitness is a Lie (2011)
While those of us who know how to wield the Internet wisely will have arrived at this conclusion, I still meet many people on a regular basis (especially women) that will try to challenge those ideas.

I don't blame them for thinking that way, the fitness industry has conditioned an entire generation into thinking cardio is the way to go and that high rep work with pink dumbbells is how you 'tone'.

The more articles there are like this, the more likely we will see a shift in how everyone tries to get fit.

bcowcher··on What Was Your First Coding Book?
My first coding book was c++ in 21days (HAH!). It did cover the basics pretty well but it took me a long time before the abstraction of objects really sunk in and templates I don't think we're especially well covered.

I probably bit off more than I could chew at the time, but I stuck with it because I was so hellbent on game programming. I didn't end up in game dev, but I think I became a better developer after spending so much time with a low level language.

bcowcher··on If you were involved in the OpenGL ES specification, you are an idiot
So OpenGL ES (Embedded systems) was not different enough? I actually think OpenGL ES didn't go far enough in the initial spec.

ES 1.1 still has alot of the old fixed function pipeline, but then in 2.0 they scrapped it all entirely, opting for a smaller, more modern API. That, to me, was a bad move. I think they should've made the shader based pipeline in 2.0 part of the 1.1 spec.

bcowcher··on Kogan imposes a tax on IE7 shoppers
I do believe the RBA was going to investigate this [1]. If they do anything about it is something else entirely however..

bcowcher··on Pin is Australia’s first all-in-one payment API
As a former e-commerce web dev, I cant begin to tell you how much this was sorely needed in Australia. Best of luck to you!
bcowcher··on Show HN: WebGL Enabler for iOS
Theres no reason this couldn't be a user permissions thing like the geolocation API's. If the user wants a particular page to have autoplay enabled, then the user should have the choice.
bcowcher··on Sugar 50x more potent than total calories in explaining diabetes [video]
If anyone is interested in a more informative video from Lustig, I'd recommend this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wSu6U8OzPk

Its long, but it covers a lot more information and history of this fine mess we're in..

bcowcher··on I’m a Junior Developer – You probably are too
I think this is more symptomatic of IT in Australia. There are pockets of good developers here and there but far and away, the majority of developers in Australia are being paid well above their grade.

This popped up in my twitter feed not too long ago: http://readify.net/our-experience/seek

Apparently a team of 35 developers couldn't get Git working.. or mercurial.. or even SVN! And had to outsource source control to another company (I'm probably being unfair, the Devs may or may not have had a say in the matter).

bcowcher··on How Exercise Fuels the Brain
I wonder what types of exercise trigger this effect and to what degree. Off the top of my head (going by their descriptions) team sports would be ideal not just for the exercise but the constant situational analysis, team work, running plays etc would increase the workload on the brain.
bcowcher··on Jon Stewart calls out congressional nerd bashing over SOPA
I think its a little from both columns. The US government makes Jons job alot easier than it has any right to.. and that scares me...
bcowcher··on Nokia Maps 3D (WebGL)
Can anyone tell how old the maps are that they are using? I looked around but I couldn't find anything.

I tried zooming over my workplace in Darwin, AU and the building we work in isn't even there.. (its roughly 5years or so old)

I imagine there is probably a mash up of old/new map data in there depending on the population of a given place..

bcowcher··on The Go Programming Language turns two
I've always wondered if Google would look at the possibility of making Go a supported language to use with Android.
bcowcher··on How Working Out Makes Us Better Entrepreneurs
Like others have said, perhaps biking isn't your thing. For me, I like to keep my workouts short and intense (<20min) and make sure I get the most out of them.

Here are some things that I do:

* High Intensity Interval Training. Basically I sprint for 10-20secs, walk for 30sec-1min, 8 times.

* Density Training. Set a timer for 15min, do 3 pushups, rest 10secs, repeat until time runs out (once you cant do 3 pushups extend rest period to 20secs)

Best part of each of these is they require no equipment, can do them anywhere, anytime and you really only have to do them once or twice a week.

bcowcher··on Software engineers hard to find
When I was in college (this was in Australia) I honestly felt like I was one of the few who genuinely had a passion for programming. I met one or two other guys during those years who had a similar passion, but by in large it was the exception rather than the norm.
bcowcher··on Negative Mass An amusing thought experiment, or the Secret of the Universe?
I decided to try just that (with html canvas). Its probably WAY off, but it was fun to mash up. http://thecowch.com/media/demo/index.html

edit: just a disclaimer, im no genius at physics and Ive probably misinterpreted the OP's post or made some other gross flaw in this sim.

bcowcher··on Whatever happened to programming?
I think the core of the problem that the OP is experiencing is that most API's are really bad. By bad, I mean the API gets in your face and becomes more hindrance than help. I say, choose your API's wisely, find what helps you and discard the rest.
bcowcher··on Stuff
This reminds me of fight club (or at least one of the core themes), in fact one of the lines in the essay reads like it was plucked out of the movie.

Anyway, Fight Club definitely struck a cord with me and since then I have been living with incredibly little stuff. I have a computer, my iphone, my car, a desk and a bed and just enough clothes to get by for 2 weeks (do laundry once a week) and of course minor other things that you need, but basically bare essentials.

While I cant say for sure how much of an impact its had on my life, I can say without a doubt that coming home always feels very relaxing and definitely helps me prepare for a new day.

bcowcher··on Why Use Subversion? - Hyrum Wright, President of the Subversion Corporation
I think moving metadata from flat file to sqlite will be a huge improvement. svn export will almost be obsolete with this move (but still useful for automated tools).
bcowcher··on The best running shoe may be nature's own
I've been using them for running twice a week and playing basketball on outdoor courts at least 2-3 times a week for the last 6 months. So far, they havent even begun to show any sign of wear.
