bburnett44··on Asynchronous I/O in DuckDB: Work, Thread, Work
Using 512gb of ram for a 22gb remote file does feel a bit weird for a benchmark but maybe they couldn’t get a large number of cores without lots of memory?
bburnett44··on Engineer creates ad block for the real world with augmented reality glasses
Fully don't like elon but is it possible you need to touch grass and log off reddit/twitter
bburnett44··on The Microsoft unit working to thwart hackers
I’m sure this group is good but jeez this is a lot of praise for a company whose security record is … uh … less than stellar
bburnett44··on A DOGE staffer appears to be posting DOGE work on his public GitHub
This is such a lame comment. He's looking at publicly available geospatial data, not trying to build a bomb.
bburnett44··on A DOGE staffer appears to be posting DOGE work on his public GitHub
Yeah the "sensitive geospatial data" is just open data. He also created the geospatial gists before trump was in office so he definitely didn't have access to critical data then https://web.archive.org/web/20250228230950/https://gist.gith...
bburnett44··on World's darkest and clearest skies at risk from industrial megaproject
This is a pretty crazy comment
bburnett44··on ASCII porn predates the Internet but it's still everywhere (2019)
I think you're missing the heavy sarcasm there
bburnett44··on Apple Says Meta Is Making Unreasonable Interoperability Requests Under EU's DMA
It feels like there should be a user option to allow (default deny) this. Like it doesn’t have to be that the minute you install WhatsApp it gets access to all of your texts or calls. But it sucks to be stuck w iMessage when that’s just locking me into apples ecosystem
bburnett44··on Don't squander public trust on bullshit
Oh boy, having worked w government/elected officials a lot, I can tell you that this is just for sure not true.

Sometimes bad behavior really is just incompetence

bburnett44··on I Am Tired of AI
I think we can pretty safely say bitcoin was a dead end other than for buying drugs, enabling ransomware payments, or financial speculation.

Show me an average person who has bought something real w bitcoin (who couldn’t have bought it for less complexity/transaction cost using a bank) and I’ll change my mind

bburnett44··on Beyond the route: Introducing granular MTA bus speed data
> universally appreciated by most

60% of the time, it works every time

bburnett44··on Thomas Piketty: 'The Draghi report is a step in the right direction'
Isn’t the idea that the money and resources have to come from somewhere?

Raise taxes or debt for the monetary side. Divert workers and other resources on the implementation side. Both of those might be better used by the private sector

bburnett44··on Sail – Unify stream processing, batch processing and compute-intensive workloads
Yeah but the website literally says “zero code changes”. It’s the long tail that’s dangerous since most people don’t understand it as well as a the core functions
bburnett44··on The "email is authentication" pattern
Is a bank deposit box not insured against those things? I've never really thought about it but always assumed they would be
bburnett44··on Apple okays Epic Games marketplace app in Europe
I’m not disagreeing with you that it’s predatory but I think the point is that by not charging up front, you get more people in the door. And even if each of those people spend less than the upfront would have been, there are so many more of them that you make money. That basic philosophy isn’t bad, it’s what most tech platforms are based on
bburnett44··on Tech Jobs Leaving California
My guess is Californias percentage is on the left and Texas is right. So california went from 20.5ish to 16ish
bburnett44··on Speeding up C++ build times
lol I initially read this as remote people workers and was super confused
bburnett44··on A16Z blogs are just glorified marketing
Somebody came to a conference that my company hosts and complained it was self promotion. Like yeah no shit. Feels like kinda the same thing here
bburnett44··on Meta outage
There’s no way fb uses gcp
bburnett44··on Show HN: We built the fastest spreadsheet
lol excel isn't the only data analysis tool
bburnett44··on Unions?
But isn't that after wages went up by like 50%? Sure in the past 6 months we're down but if you look at the past 5 years we're up a ton
bburnett44··on Google “We have no moat, and neither does OpenAI”
The problem is that the llms are better at search (for an open ended question) than Google is and that’s where most of googles revenue comes from. So it actually gives a new company like openai the opportunity to change consumers destinations from google
bburnett44··on Tell HN: ChatGPT is fantastic for finding and solving issues in logs
Yeah it's truly incredible w scripts
bburnett44··on Reasons the banking crisis isn’t a repeat of 2008
Yeah but there’s all sorts of weird business dynamics w china. For the most part, government exists to enforce business/personal rights in the us versus the reversed in china. Like I’d say the single regulatory framework is actually a bad thing there
bburnett44··on Ask HN: Why did medium.com "fail"?
Yeah thanks for your transparency but how do you go about fixing these problems? Like it's great to acknowledge them but the "Why NodeJS is dead" article was in the suggested sidebar for me yesterday
bburnett44··on Ask HN: Feeling Hopeless and Lost at 23
Can’t hurt to get a psychiatrist. FWIW this sounds like textbook depression to me. OP has a great job at 23 and sounds 100% focused on failing classes in college
bburnett44··on Ask HN: Are you tired of reading ChatGPT headlines?
Picasso didn’t paint the Mona Lisa… did you fact check w chatgpt
bburnett44··on GitHub Sponsors will stop supporting PayPal
Apple Pay (like Apple wallet) doesn’t charge anything inherently. If you’re buying a subscription (like to an app) through the App Store, with or without Apple Pay, they charge 30%. These are two different things.
bburnett44··on GitHub Sponsors will stop supporting PayPal
Apple doesn’t charge merchants anything for using Apple Pay, they charge the banks for being able to have their cards in Apple wallet. Merchants still get charged by the banks but Apple doesn’t take anything from them.

The 30% fees is on App Store purchases

bburnett44··on Patagonia’s $3B corporate gift is also a convenient way to avoid taxes
Yeah this just how taxes on capital gains donations work. Zero sinister about this
