bberrry··on The part of Postgres we hate the most: Multi-version concurrency control
Could it be this? https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLSE8ODhjZXja7K1hjZ01U...
bberrry··on Google Authenticator now supports Google Account synchronization
Apps can set a flag disallowing screenshots by the operating system
bberrry··on Yubico is merging with ACQ Bure and intends to go public
I wasn't aware they had grown that much. Thanks for the correction
bberrry··on Yubico is merging with ACQ Bure and intends to go public
Very. They are a tiny Swedish company that pay for top talent, are quite active and hands-on in the netsec community. It's not a faceless corporation with a Chinese PO Box.
bberrry··on Virtual Threads Arrive in JDK 21, Ushering a New Era of Concurrency
I'm not positive about this but I believe the virtual threads can yield at syscalls (i.e. IO calls). I don't think GUI application code is littered with these syscalls where a virtual thread can naturally yield so you get non-blocking for "free". Someone please correct me if I'm mistaken.
bberrry··on My diatribe against “skeptics” (2016)
Novella expressed everything I felt inside but couldn't possibly articulate as well. Thank you for linking
bberrry··on Western Digital cloud services down for 4 days
Europe tends to have good consumer protection and isn't completely captured by lobbyists unlike the US.
bberrry··on 60M Americans have taxes so simple the IRS could do them automatically
That's quite the extremist position you have there. Would you like zero government services? For profit police and fire departments?
bberrry··on BBC advises staff to delete TikTok from their work phones
It's one of the most installed apps on the planet, hardly a "random app".
bberrry··on Yes, you should still learn to code
What makes you so confident its the outsourced jobs that will get cut and not the domestic ones?
bberrry··on Legacy Software Systems: How to Live with Aging Software Architecture?
I think that's part of our responsibility as engineers to ensure that technical debt doesn't pile up. Business will want to focus on pushing new stuff and engineers have to be a counterbalancing force. It's literally your job.

This hasn't been a problem in the places I've worked. Perhaps I'm lucky or it's the fact that I don't live in a very hierarchical society (Sweden).

bberrry··on Legacy Software Systems: How to Live with Aging Software Architecture?
If you start a rewrite or a large refactor, for Gods sake, follow through and _finish_. Otherwise you have made things even worse. I can't tell you how often I've come across the remnants of such projects, abandoned with some sliver left. I make a point to never leave it like that.
bberrry··on A new class of drugs for weight loss could end obesity
I'd be lying if I said I wasn't excited by the discovery of semaglutide. I'm not particularly heavy (BMI of 26.5) but I would happily pay for it if it was available over the counter.

I wonder how long that will take, if ever.

bberrry··on Official requests to ban selling Atomic Heart game
Russia is hardly a communist society. If this were made by a CCP funded studio he _might_ have a point.
bberrry··on Lucky girl syndrome and the endless rebranding of “The Secret”
I'd say that applies extremely rarely. When success depends on putting in the work (which is most often the case, especially if you have a higher aptitude than most), giving up easily is a major impediment.

I say this as someone who had this problem myself. Always being told "things come so easily to you" made me immediately avoid everything where I didn't excel out of the gate.

bberrry··on 3dfx: So powerful it’s kind of ridiculous
I was quite into QWTF (the original Team Fortress) and being able to use OpenGL allowed you to have gorgeous see-through water. This was a massive advantage because players tried to avoid snipers by going through the water. Also super useful on well6 in the flag room. Ah, the nostalgia.
bberrry··on JEP 430: String Templates (Preview) Proposed to Target Java 21
Agreed, the economics for this syntax is terrible.

bberrry··on Yes, Crypto Is All a Scam
Seems I hit a sore spot to provoke such a pedantic reply.

Obviously the cryptography was not enabled by crypto currencies, but the possibility to accept ransom payments at scale with little risk. Are you going to argue that crypto didn't facilitate the absolute boom in ransomware we've seen the past few years? The article you link says it did.

bberrry··on Yes, Crypto Is All a Scam
Ransomware was made possible by crypto so.. uhm.. there's that.
bberrry··on Solving the cube root of 19,683 mentally
There is a method called the rule of 72. You can look it up but it's essentially: Years to Double = 72 / Annual Rate of Return
bberrry··on Deepfaked Tom Cruise and Paris Hilton by Metaphysic
I'd like to see the original for comparison
bberrry··on Deepfaked Tom Cruise and Paris Hilton by Metaphysic
Maybe I'm bad at spotting these things but it looks and sounds super convincing to me. I really dread this technology weaponized in politics.
bberrry··on Working fewer hours is associated with higher life satisfaction
Yet the happiest people in the world are from European social democratic countries with high taxation.
bberrry··on What should I know about garbage collection as a Java developer?
Presumably if you're creating a large map in memory it's being used, no? Or did you have something static that was really only used during startup?
bberrry··on What’s in a PR statement: LastPass breach explained
My LastPass account literally had ONE iteration of pbkdf2 (https://i.imgur.com/34aIOzO.png) and it seems I'm not the only one: https://snabelen.no/@vegardlarsen/109575002998425618

Absolutely amateurish. I hope no one trusts LastPass ever again.. I know I won't.

My account was registered 2010 if anyone is interested.

bberrry··on “Does anyone use LinkedList? I wrote it, and I never use it.” (2015)
I believe I have implemented an LRU cache that needed to use LinkedList internally to be efficient. It never saw production use though, it was mostly an exercise.
bberrry··on I need structure in my life
I think intention matters here and his was not to demean or "sight-see" the life of poor people. _You_ are choosing to view this from the most unfavorable angle.
bberrry··on Raft Consensus Animated (2014)
Awesome, I failed to find that. Thanks!
bberrry··on Raft Consensus Animated (2014)
I've had a surprisingly hard time finding a bare-bones Raft implementation in Java purely for leader election.

The same hunt also surprised me that there is no common way to do leader election among pods in Kubernetes.
