bbddg··on Norway to track all supermarket purchases?
I guarantee the NSA is slurping up this data in the US.
bbddg··on Norway to track all supermarket purchases?
You're just describing laws. Is the worry here that they could more effectively enforce laws because of this tracking? Is that a bad thing?
bbddg··on It’s not still the early days of blockchain
A legal framework. You mean laws? We have those for all sorts of things but we still have courts to interpret How the laws apply for specific situations.
bbddg··on It’s not still the early days of blockchain
Law is not like code. It requires interpretation. You're nuts if you don't think most of these "smart contacts" wouldn't just end up in court anyways.

There's no magic bullet for solving a problem like wealth inequality. It's a political problem that requires a political solution.

I'd also imagine that crypto ownership is massively concentrated in the top 10% wealthiest people anyways.

bbddg··on It’s not still the early days of blockchain
The difference is that I'd imagine a substantial portion of the activity in crypto is related to crime. Whereas the entire global economy runs on USD.
bbddg··on It’s not still the early days of blockchain
I don't want to be tracked so I'm going to put everything in a public ledger.
bbddg··on Climate change: IPCC report is 'code red for humanity'
"Durable/fixable hardware" is a more important matter than climate change? Only on hackernews folks...
bbddg··on Persuading the Body to Regenerate Its Limbs
Getting a tooth pulled is a much much worse procedure than a simple filling. I'd probably opt for 100 fillings before signing up for getting a tooth pulled.
bbddg··on Subsidiary of Toyota to acquire Lyft’s self-driving car division
It's bad enough private investors are wasting so much capital on self-driving. The last thing we need is the government doing the same.
bbddg··on Plant-based diet would reduce agricultural land use from 4 to 1B hectares
So basically your solution to this problem would be eugenics rather than just eating less meat?
bbddg··on Amazon Workers’ Union Drive Reaches Far Beyond Alabama
So to bring this back to the topic at hand you think that the Amazon workers Union drive is on the "military intervention in Libya" end of the spectrum... For some reason?
bbddg··on Amazon Workers’ Union Drive Reaches Far Beyond Alabama
The US is famously a country with no natural resources.
bbddg··on Amazon Workers’ Union Drive Reaches Far Beyond Alabama
Okay so now it doesn't have to do with unions but with IQ and "cultural diversity"?

Why is the US so rich if it has so much cultural diversity unlike Norway then?

bbddg··on Amazon Workers’ Union Drive Reaches Far Beyond Alabama
Well how would you explain any of the Nordic countries if you thought there was a connection between GDP and Unionization? Norway has 70% of their workers covered by a Union contract and has a higher GDP per capita than the US. Along with some of the lowest levels of inequality of any nation.
bbddg··on [dead]
As a Texan without power since 2am Monday morning I just count my blessings that we aren't subject to federal oversight. Just imagine how horrible that would be! My house is 20 degrees right now. With Federal oversight, who knows how low it could go!
bbddg··on Amazon Warehouse Workers to Decide Whether to Form Company's First U.S. Union
Lots of states in the US have "right to work" laws which make it much harder to workers to organize unions.
bbddg··on School or Prison
Really interesting analysis: "schools operate that way because that's the way they are."
bbddg··on Print this file, your printer will jam (2008)
Yeah isn't this why you should rotate your tires regularly?
bbddg··on California plan for wealth tax on anyone who spends 60 days a year in the state
Jeff Bezos is just one person. Do you really think the US can't afford to cancel everyone's student debt?
bbddg··on Show HN: An anti-book recommendation tool, to help you escape your echo chamber
Isn't the core conceit of The Bell Curve that Black people have lower IQs than white people?
bbddg··on Why Americans Have Been Deceived About Canada's Health Care System
The US system rations care as well. It just rations on the basis of who can afford care. It seems much more logical and humane to ration care based on how essential the service required is.
bbddg··on UK to ban sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030: FT
To the market! The cause of, and solution to, all of life's problems!
bbddg··on Why did Warren Buffett invest $6B+ in centuries-old Japanese trading houses?
Honestly it's kind of psychotic.
bbddg··on New Zealand eliminates Covid-19
You must be new here...
bbddg··on Boeing 737-800 Passenger Jet Crashes in Iran Due to Technical Issue
Interesting timing to say the least.
bbddg··on Homelessness rises in U.S., driven by California housing crisis
If there are enough houses how is it "overpopulation". It's clearly a failing of the housing market. It's not able to efficiently allocate houses to people that need them, it's designed to allocate houses only to people who can maximize profit for land owners.
bbddg··on Homelessness rises in U.S., driven by California housing crisis
Interesting that you don't cite anything that shows automation and immigration are the main drivers either...
bbddg··on Google cancels TGIF weekly all-hands meetings
I don't understand what you mean. I'm definitely not saying that "garden-variety, oppositional politics at work is how you can change "political and power dynamics" most effectively."

The type of politics I want in the workplace is the politics of building worker power and fomenting radical labor unrest.

bbddg··on Google cancels TGIF weekly all-hands meetings
I think what they mean by status quo is the political and power dynamics. Not how much "politics" is discussed.
