bballer··on Starting a Business in Silicon Valley
For drinks that get free refills the initial sale means more than the refills. It literally cost 1c to provide the drink and you sold it for $3.00 (that's the 300% margin). Who cares if you spend another 1c to provide a free refill if that would be the difference in the customers mind on whether they should buy the drink initially or just have water or OJ (something that has negative margin, or a very low margin).
bballer··on Ask HN: Have you ever inherited a codebase nobody on the team could understand?
This so much. You talk with product managers etc about a new feature that could revolutionize a certain portion of your product so you start hacking away to get an alpha. The alpha is shown to some of the sales people and higher ups who start frothing at the mouth to put it into customers hands. The PM then says we need to ship this ASAP and into production goes code that was just feeling out whether or not the feature was even possible to begin with. Add a couple of months of no major refactor but tons of bug fixes plus additional features and you end up in a really fun place :]
bballer··on Ask HN: How would you queue and process 10K+ long running jobs
I wont fully elaborate on what a job is but I'll give you a couple examples:

Updating anywhere from 500-5M items over APIs that are rate limited.

Dumping datasets that have to be normalized and massaged into files/ and dropped off at third party servers anywhere from every 15 minutes to once a month. These files could contain anywhere from 500 lines to 5M lines.

Injesting datasets just as large as described above but massaged and saved into our caches and DB.

Sorry but Jenkins doesn't achieve anything related to my question.

Thanks for your comment! Don't have enough time to fully respond to it right now but will get back to you in the morning.
bballer··on Ask HN: How would you queue and process 10K+ long running jobs
Yeah we are already using SQS for a similar system that's currently in production. We don't need a forever queue as part of the goal is to keep the queue as empty as possible at all times. What is really important is making sure that only one job (with a distinct set of params) can be scheduled at one time and run by only worker at one time.
bballer··on Ask HN: How would you queue and process 10K+ long running jobs
For workers we run only Java and run everything on AWS. We have an existing production system that uses a combination of SQS, DynamoDB, and Postgres, and EC2s to achieve something very similar to this. Just want to check all the boxes before we dive into building out something for a new system coming into production that shares many of the same requirements.
bballer··on Ask HN: How would you queue and process 10K+ long running jobs
Yeah lambda functions won't suffice for the kind of jobs we run. Plus we are a full java shop and the don't want to pay for the cold start times on lambda for the jobs that do end up only taking < 1 minutes.

Thanks for your thoughts!

bballer··on Ask HN: How would you queue and process 10K+ long running jobs
Thanks for your insight. This is currently close to what we have in production for one of our systems and we are building a brand new system that shares a lot of the same requirements, just fishing to make sure we aren't missing anything :]
bballer··on Ask HN: How would you queue and process 10K+ long running jobs
We run all Java so that is a no go and at the scale I'm talking about don't think I would trust those solutions. Thanks for the input though!
bballer··on Microsoft intercepting Firefox, Chrome installation on Windows 10 Insider build
So users who only run Linux will get the shaft.
bballer··on Ask HN: How did you find your current job?
I was a freelancer doing contract work for various companies (while also running a few side projects) and a guy I did work for recommended me. Guy who I was recommended to messaged me on LinkedIn and we arranged a lunch meeting to get to know each other. Soon after I started doing contracting work for them. After about a month of the contracting gig he asked what it would take to bring me on full time and we came to some agreements. Now two years later I'm a partner at the company and we're growing like crazy. It's cool how all the little decisions and events in your life can come together to get you where you want to be.
bballer··on Ask HN: Anyone designs financial engineering tools as a hobby?
Experiencing the same thing on Firefox 60 running on XUbuntu
bballer··on Ask HN: In 2018, should we use SnakeCase or CamelCase for JSON?
My personal preference is to always use snake case, and not just for JSON but for all javascript variables, while keeping all functions names as camel case. Since javascript doesn't have type safety I find that it makes it super easy when looking at code to quickly make a distinction of "is this a function or is this a variable".
bballer··on Reddit’s Redesign
I think this is absolutely true for user to user social interaction websites, less true for B2B applications. In the last 2 years at my company we took an old early 2000s looking application that our customers used and completely redesigned it plus brought in a lot of new functionality. To the point where at the core they are still getting some of the same job done but with such a different experience drawing 1:1 lines between the functionality is blurred. This whole new experience has been absolutely fantastic, our customers rave about it and our revenue has grown around 250%. Not to say this is always the case but when something is dated and not providing the experience it can/should be, sometimes a rewrite can be a huge win. But like you said, it still can't be done in a bubble and it can't be driven by a vision of a designer but ultimately the experience your customers seek.
bballer··on Reddit’s Redesign
So you're saying you don't like Reddit for being Reddit... because the whole trends towards the lowest common denominator seems to be all Reddit is now-a-days.
bballer··on AMP for email is a terrible idea
I'll hop on this train. 7 happy years for me!
bballer··on AMP for email is a terrible idea
Meaning no Chrome, no AMP based emails? Sounds good to me!
bballer··on Americans are spending less on clothing
Yeah I live in a pretty big city and I live in a part of the town that is sandwiched between two very wealthy areas so it can make for very good thrift store shopping. It is still a very hit or miss thing though. Sometimes you find tons of stuff, other times you find nothing.
bballer··on Americans are spending less on clothing
Yeah it is lucky. I have a odd body type, I'm 6'3" but only weight 170 pounds, so I really wear a XL-Tall but a lot of the XL clothing works pretty well. It's also a hit or miss every time I go in. Sometimes I will find 10 things that fit and are great, other times I leave empty handed.
bballer··on Americans are spending less on clothing
With the exception of shoes and jackets I buy all my clothes at Goodwill. It's awesome! Every couple of months I spend around $20 dollars and I always have nice new tee shirts, button ups, pants etc. You wont believe how many nice clothes people simply give away.

Plus it makes me feel great knowing I'm contributing to reuse and giving money to a company that helps employee less fortunate people.

bballer··on Kicking off Stripe’s private beta in India
You know you can generate a API test token and use one of test card numbers for all your testing purposes. There is a toggle in your main dashboard which will let you switch between sandbox/test mode and production for viewing charges etc.

bballer··on I’ve supported myself for the past decade with my side project
Where did the initial seeding of all the lyrics & bands come from? Also, are most of the new lyrics contributed by users and if so how do you handle authenticating that the lyrics provided are accurate?
bballer··on Ask HN: How do you organize your files
I try not to over think it, just:

  ~/$MAJOR_TOPIC
  |
  |--- ./$MORE_SPECIFIC
      |
      |--- ./$MORE_SPECIFIC
          |
          |--- ./general-file.type
      |
      | ./general-file.type
  |
  |--- ./$MORE_SPECIFIC
  |
  |--- ./general-file.type
etc

As you find yourself collecting more general files under a directory that can be logically grouped, create a new directory and move them to it.

Also keep all your directories in the same naming convention (idk maybe I'm just OCD)
