baw-bag··on Hole Punch: Sling your spaceship around gravitational fields
I love these kind of things and all of their quirks. Just interacting with a webpage in a fun way. More of this!
baw-bag··on The science of Monkey Island: can grog dissolve a metal mug that fast?
I agree! My friend and I have the fondest memories of that game in particular since we played it for months on the Amiga 500 at the time. Meathook was my hero. We both have this inner memory of 4k photorealistic graphics which doesn't match the reality of the 90s game.
baw-bag··on typ.ing
The thought of learning a new keyboard is kind of scary. Is there any true difference? 30 years of typing on a QWERTY here. I wonder how long it would take to get to 75WPM on graphite. A decade?
baw-bag··on typ.ing
I loved it! As soon as I start to do these things, I get stressed and become much worse! Anyone remember the car game where you raced against others by typing? That was fun but forgotten the link.
baw-bag··on Working with AI feels more like leadership than coding
My boss is a designer and does the same. He has come into a mature product's codebase, the only project the company has, he called me about 6 months ago and started boasting with a screenshare showing me how he had 5 terminals open and smashing through ideas straight into production.

Now the system is failing, he thinks I am going to go in and fix all of his problems. Told him straight what I told him 6 months ago, he owns it, so get it fixed.

Not sure what happens to myself or the company by the end of the year.

Needs to be more stories about these people injecting AI Hopium and destroying their product, there isn't enough of them.

baw-bag··on From your doorbell to your home network
Does anyone ever wonder why a doorbell needs to be connected? I do, so I don't have one. Diminishing returns by design? I've never been like "oh I am glad my doorbell is connected to my network". Wondering what marketing I didn't see (and fall for).
baw-bag··on AI financial advice is surprisingly good, especially if you ask right questions
I honestly write it off. "especially if you ask the right questions" just collapses to being a bag holder because I didn't ask the right questions with or without AI.
baw-bag··on Show HN: How far do I have to go to run into 100k people?
Ah interesting, I seen the title "run into" as "bump into" or in this context, get to where 100k people are. I don't know any US addresses far from population centers so I pumped in Area 51!

Clarity needed on the title or description!

baw-bag··on Every new car sold in the European Union must include a driver monitoring camera
Toyota... When we look after a dog for a few days for a friend, it beeps. When I put shopping on the back seat, it beeps. Drives me wild. It "beep... beep... beep..." for a minute then "BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP".

I wouldn't get another because of how annoying that is.

baw-bag··on Ship traces journey Spanish Armada sailors made in 1588
I am finding an interest in this subject as well. Just wondered if you (or any reading) had any good book recommendations about the age of sail. I seen one of the Spanish first ship of the line's flags and the scale was incredible. Plenty of stuff going on in the UK as well, but I'd like to visit Netherlands and Spain's museums too. Hopefully we both make the trip some day to learn more.
baw-bag··on The Coming Loop
The way I answer this question is, I don't because my boss is saying to basically accept whatever LLMs spit out which is fine by me because I have explained the risks of doing this to our only product and it was shrugged off. I am both disgusted and excused and just take the salary.
baw-bag··on Identity verification on Claude
Surprised there isn't a "Fake Face" market like a mannequin face delivered to your door.
baw-bag··on Your CEO is suffering from AI psychosis
Is there a term for something similar?

My boss is injecting hopium. He barely sleeps compiling massive massive documents which don't answer anything. We literally have a "(LILR Design Language)" spec which when you keep slicing through it, doesn't actually say anything.

It takes 70 seconds to full scroll through it with the fast scroll mechanism, but the whole thing boils down to "basically if it looks good then its good".

And even worse, he is asking for access to the codebase of the product since "I can do 90% of what we need and all the devs need to do is review the PR".

What is this called?

baw-bag··on Windows 11 Notepad to support Markdown
It's not like I am thrilled, but it has at least some value over the last what, 5-10 years of windows changes. I can see me mistaking markup. I can't see me mistaking copilot.
baw-bag··on Claws are now a new layer on top of LLM agents
I read all 500+ comments at the time of writing and I don't understand. Something about something, with people saying something isn't a claw.
baw-bag··on New Safari developer tools provide insight into CSS Grid Lanes
They are all telling you "Just buy a mac". Exactly the point that you and I were downvoted for saying.
baw-bag··on New Safari developer tools provide insight into CSS Grid Lanes
You can't debug it in anything other than a mac
baw-bag··on A WebGL game where you deliver messages on a tiny planet
It's really unique and beautiful. I want to see more of this. I grew up with random interactive experiences in Flash, this is far more amazing that those days but we need more of this and less of the form crud crap.
baw-bag··on U.S. hits new low in World Happiness Report
Its not genocide though. Feel free to provide a link to the legal judgement.
baw-bag··on Getting AI to work in complex codebases
You were never an engineer. I'm 18 years into my career on the web and games and I was never an engineer. It's blind people leading blind people and your somewhere in the middle based on 2013 patterns you got to this point on and 2024 advancements called "Vibe Coding" and you get paid $$ to make it work.

Building a bridge from steel that lasts 100 years and carries real living people in the tens or hundreds of thousands per day without failing under massive weather spikes is engineering.

baw-bag··on That boolean should probably be something else
Please if you are in this situation do not take this advice. You just generate massive garbage abstractions upstream. If boolean arguments are out of hand, the problem isn't the boolean.
baw-bag··on Working with the UK Government to Protect Children Online
It's just so tragic to read it like that but, that's exactly how it is.
baw-bag··on TimeGuessr
It's not that. They changed recently to 100% zoom. It used to be much more fine. Zoom in a little, Zoom out a little. For the past week, it's been max zoom in either direction. Kinda annoying.
baw-bag··on TimeGuessr
Its not true!

I have been playing TimeGuessr for 11 months, I do it before bed.

I have been all over, I personally really struggle between Vietnam and Thailand and got even that wrong with Cambodia. I am simply ignorant but it's not just rich countries.

baw-bag··on Research suggests Big Bang may have taken place inside a black hole
There needs to be some kind of hackernews library or goodread. I have enjoyed many books (and some no so much) but always on the look out for books.
baw-bag··on Gemini-2.5-pro-preview-06-05
I really appreciate that. I will see how I get on and may well give you a shout. Thank you!
baw-bag··on Gemini-2.5-pro-preview-06-05
I am really struggling with this. I tried Cline with both OpenAI and Claude to very weird results. Often burning through credits to get no where or just running out of context. I just got Cursor for a try so can't say anything on that yet.
baw-bag··on Gurus of 90s Web Design: Zeldman, Siegel, Nielsen
I worked as a Nailgun operative in a Palette factory for a few dollars with people shooting nails at eachother for fun. I seen turtleshell.com one day and at the time I was like woah.

Flash was my route out of garbage and I miss it on behalf of younger people. I remember making a circle and keyframes. Attaching bits of code to frames to make it do what I want. Remember living at my moms house in the bath reading Flash Math Creativity or Colin Moock's books. I spent so so long understanding the concept of an Object or a Class or functions that call functions.

I feel that if I went back today, I'd be assaulted by package managers, dependencies, build systems, frameworks. No easy and beautiful way to draw a circle that weekend and animate it to an oval.

It is a real loss.

Stuff moves on and I am a developer, but my interest in motion (Penner! Keith Peters!) gave me a real solid feeling of what feels good with interactivity and motion and sometimes I open that ticket but it is rare. Everything is just the same now and I solve the same problems many of you do over and over again. It's boring. No creativity, no inspiration.

baw-bag··on Boston Dynamics robot Atlas goes hands on [video]
You would just change the machine that the human uses. If a task is too difficult and hence needs a human yesterday, and if there is a solution that a humanoid robot can now do today then you would simply get rid of all of the humanoid robotics surrounding the core problem. Even if that means bolting the humanoid to the floor just to use that single part you need.
baw-bag··on How to Train Yourself to Go to Sleep Earlier
That is unfortunate. Mine is 2am and it has been that way for 3 decades. It is a pain in the ass because I only sleep well at the weekend but then my mornings are gone and family give no end of grief about being lazy.

6am is a whole new ball game. Not sure how I could deal with that.
