bauble··on What is nueralese and why is it bad
This reminds me of how I'll sometimes be deep in thought, and someone will yap "Wacha thinking about?" and it sort of snaps me back into the world of language, and I begin the laborious task of translating a long train of thought into English, which is interpreted by my interlocutor as resistance or an attempt to deceive them about my thoughts. To some people, thinking without using language is a foreign concept.
bauble··on Windows 10 quietly gets one more year of support and updates
My last Windows machine is for games. Hopefully I'll be able to get a Steam machine for an easy exit. If a game doesn't run on it, I won't buy or play it.
bauble··on Show HN: Putt.day a daily mini golf game
Before making the first shot, turn around and face backwards. Shoot back and to the left toward the barrier. After the ball ricochets, it should hit the downward-angled barrier on the opposite side and hop over it to the end section, where it's not too hard to sink the ball with three or four more shots.
bauble··on YouTube to automatically label AI-generated videos
I'm referring to the tag that Youtube is going to assign automatically.
bauble··on YouTube to automatically label AI-generated videos
Only if you view the label as accurate, which you really, really should not.
bauble··on YouTube to automatically label AI-generated videos
This isn't possible on Youtube right now. The automatic tools for detecting LLM-generated content have far too many false positives. And obviously no one is going to pay an army of people to curate the content. The best thing right now is to rely on the reputation of individual channels that you are personally familiar with.

Youtube's automatically applied label will be worse than useless unless they've made some remarkable breakthrough, which I doubt. They'd be better off just using creator-applied labels, and of course if they would label anything that Youtube itself contaminated with automatic translations or its ilk, that would be good too.

bauble··on We should all be using dependency cooldowns
You're correct; it's a misuse of the term. Better terms would be embargo, quarantine, or just delay.
bauble··on Helping Valve to power up Steam devices
I'm staring at the EOL of Windows 10, which I use on my game machine. I'll happily get one of the cubes for my next box. I'd like this to be the end of my Windows usage.
bauble··on OOP is shifting between domains, not disappearing
This is so much nonsense. Contracts and interfaces have little to do with OOP. If you don't like inheritance, then talk about OOP. It's fine. Many people, including myself, don't like inheritance. On the other hand, if it's interfaces and contracts that have you bothered, parse-dont-validate to your heart's content. If the domain allows it. Just don't drag unrelated concepts into this particular discussion.
bauble··on Cognitive load is what matters
Humans are the worst programmers, except for all other programmers.
bauble··on How YouTube won the battle for TV viewers
Is that the new button that's been popping up? And here I was blaming SponsorBlock.
bauble··on At Least 13 People Died by Suicide Amid U.K. Post Office Scandal, Report Says

bauble··on Firefox is fine. The people running it are not
It would be insanity. Even the most dedicated developers would switch to Chrome instantly.
bauble··on Meta: Shut down your invasive AI Discover feed
Even with the notes, it doesn't make a lot of sense. Why would you illustrate communication problems with people who literally don't speak the same language?
bauble··on Amelia Earhart's Reckless Final Flights
"Earhart planned to have human navigators on board with her, but she’d be the first female pilot to accomplish the feat." - What an odd statement. Could "male" have been replaced by "human"?
bauble··on Judge rules Apple executive lied under oath, makes criminal contempt referral
Innovators like Jobs are incredibly rare. We're lucky he chose someone who would not only preserve the company, but stave off the worst of the enshittification that has eaten Microsoft and HP. Cook is also surprisingly protective of privacy and civil rights. I'll take him over 99% of executives these days.
bauble··on The Labyrinth of Villa Pisani in Stra, an Intricate Pathway
The article says that it is "intricate and difficult", and "has only one path leading to the center, and each junction or fork never allows you to find an alternative route, but always leads to a dead end". Unless I'm mistaken, that would make it easier, not more difficult, by guaranteeing that a hand-on-wall strategy would succeed. To defeat the strategy, at least one uninterrupted path must encircle the center of the labyrinth.
bauble··on Apple Maps on the web launches in beta
That's downright ironic.
bauble··on How to Get Out of Vi (2015)
ZZ if you're musically inclined.
bauble··on Ask HN: Did you encounter any leap year bugs today?
I had a unit tests for a Java LocalDate that was being increased by one year. It checked whether the month and day were the same, and failed because the current day (29) didn't equal the year-hence one (28). I changed it to check that the difference between the days was less than two.
bauble··on Dieselgate, but for trains – some heavyweight hardware hacking
I thought it was a good reference. In both cases, the manufacturer placed illicit, hidden code that that could (and probably should) get it in trouble with the law.
bauble··on Advent of Code 2023 is nigh
I think the issue is that they tried to separate the input into a list of tokens, like ["5", "nine"], and work from there, which doesn't work on something like "oneight".
bauble··on Deno Cron
I don't understand the reluctance to hire a system administrator. If you have two or more technical folks, at least one of them should be a sysadmin (or "devops" if you prefer). Pretending that it's an unskilled role that anyone should pick up reflects a poor understanding of the industry.
bauble··on A trick to eliminate 2π (sometimes)
e^i*tau = 1 is pretty elegant, too.
bauble··on “In roughly two hours, 1647 devices are about to be wiped”
Leadership.
bauble··on Ask HN: Why do some people not communicate clearly?
Usually, people asking me questions don't want to hear "I don't know.". They want me to dedicate myself to solving their issue.
bauble··on Elon Musk owns Twitter: The story so far
Sloppy reporting? In MY mainstream media?!

Currently the linked story, from TechCrunch, doesn't call it a "kitchen" sink. Kudos to them.

bauble··on Dear JetBrains, Don't mess with your UI
Of course.
bauble··on Kill-sticky, a bookmarklet to remove sticky elements and restore scrolling
I used that for a while, but I was using it so often that I installed https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/alwayskillsti.... Sometimes I see things flicker briefly into view and I'm reminded that it's working. I've had to whitelist several sites that I use regularly, but it's pretty low maintenance after that.
bauble··on Ask HN: What keyboard do you use?
A Das Keyboard, unmarked. Expensive and heavy. It's hard to tell which model, but probably a Model S Professional. They don't seem to sell them unmarked any more, but there's still the model 4.
