bato··on GitHub to lay off 10% and close all offices
Pretty much all new features from acquisition news are on azure (packages, codespaces etc).

Which is why outages usually match Azure outages.

bato··on GitHub to lay off 10% and close all offices
Considering most of the new offerings are hosted on Azure, it makes sense they go down every time Azure does.
bato··on Hills Hoist: The Iconic Rotary Clothesline that Shaped Suburban Australia
It's a common sight in northern France, not generally renowned for its sunny climate.

They could probably their staff what?

Looks like your sentence is incomplete.

But that is already how it works for quite a few white male engineers.

How many of us have had to work with "that guy" who interviews really well, but sucks at his job and coast for 6 months before people finally realise how rubbish at his job he is and he finally gets the boot. In more extreme cases they even get promoted over you and become your manager in spite of their incompetence.

Nice of you to assume that women and minorities are less qualified.

Especially in light of the numerous studies that show that people (men AND women) keep assuming on your technical skills solely based on genders.

bato··on Hello from Orkut
Yeah that was quite annoying, to say the least.

Any and every group would be spammed to death by Brazilians until you gave up and left them one by one.

Surprised no one has been mentioning qwant.com yet.
bato··on Tesla: Don't use our Superchargers all the time
The part that really hurt my non-american sensibilities is when the letter points out a cost of 12cts/kWh.

I wish my electricity was that cheap.

As for the main point itself, I can imagine the intent was to make sure supercharger station are actually available for someone on a long distance trip, but it is quite poorly worded.

Would you actually get 10 pages a day every day while you were on call though?
bato··on Take-home interviews
I actually did a similar thing as an ops guy (debugging systems as described in some questions) and really liked the concept. On the other hand I work on mathematical riddles for fun so maybe I'm the core target for those.

It doesn't replace face to face interviews but I can see it as a good example of "how would face this real life situation you would encounter if you got the job?"

bato··on This Industry is Fucked
To continue along your analogy, that would be akin to the local population saying "there's need to involve police forces, it's only the one guy" "Just because there's a violent criminal in town doesn't mean we have to do anything about it, we're on the whole nice people"

Instead of you know, assisting the police with their enquiries, teaching their kids it's not ok to slice open people, volunteering for search parties to find the victims, organising groups to walk kids to and from school, etc.

I've been using qwant with pretty good results lately.

Still a bit hit and miss but getting better every day.

bato··on In France, New Review of 35-Hour Workweek
That's what most white collar jobs are ("cadre").

They do come with a more favourable termination notice and retirement plan as well so it's not all bad.

Confirming we also saw a lot of lockup issues since 3.12 (with both ext4 and btrfs).
bato··on In France, New Review of 35-Hour Workweek
When I was living in France, I thought it was a great idea.

As a white collar (so not being bound to the 9 to 5 and sometimes pulling in 36h shifts...), the system worked as such:

I would work 5 days a week, and get an extra day off of my choice every fortnight.

The results were really great for me and people I knew:

I no longer needed to take days off to deal with paperwork, and other administrative tasks, I could finally get an appointment with my banker. I could afford to go to the day market to buy fresh produce.

I knew of married couples that would alternate theirs to be on days where the kids didn't have school (traditionally wednesdays) so they didn't have to source someone to watch over the kids on a traditionally very busy day for childcare.

Obviously the system is not perfect, but surely as work gets "easier" the way forward would be to reduce hours worked, not increase them...

Surely doing a lookup for <potential name>.com would be a good first step?
bato··on Passwords in plain text
The scariest part is that there are 200+ pages of those...
bato··on EBay Valet
Beaten to it.

Sniping is hugely frustrating and the main reason people either use buy it now or plain old ads (cf gumtree/Craigslist etc)

bato··on The lessons of Bulletstorm and the problem with price-points
What's annoying me with the article/opinions expressed, is that AAA games should have multiplayer.

I think it's annoying, and I'm always thinking about what would have made it to the game if they didn't spend time and money tacking multiplayer on top.

Obviously I must have a pretty unpopular opinion since all the new games have multiplayer now :(
