baskire··on Ask HN: Why does Pinterest dominate Google text search results?
Or just avoid using google. The Pinterest results in google image search queries was a major driver to me using bing/ duck duck go.
baskire··on 2020 had some significant silver linings
Fair enough. Even a single peace deal would have been a huge accomplishment. The fact there’s multiple in one year is awesome.

Gives me hope than we’ll see a peace deal with the West Bank and Gaza Strip within the decade.

baskire··on 2020 had some significant silver linings
The bandwidth is less than peak Netflix. But the low latency pps needs have increased
baskire··on 2020 had some significant silver linings
Article forgets the biggest of them all. Peace in the Middle East.

Not once in my life did I think 2020 would be the year when many middle eastern countries sign peace deals with Israel. Heck there’s already Israeli Jewish weddings in Dubai!!!

The us government who helped broker these deserves a peace prize. If not with their help and assistance these peace deals would not have occurred.

I look forward to what 2021 will bring with the Middle East better aligned to future industrial and cultural growth.

S3 has strong consistency of list operations now.
baskire··on Starting Sunday, cable companies can no longer ‘rent’ you the router you own
Airbnb does this all the time. Their advertised prices don’t include cleaning fees.

If Airbnb included those fees the pricing would often come out higher than a hotel in many cases. And hotels include cleaning costs as part of the nightly rate

baskire··on Preliminary Incident Statement
Haha, that gave me a good laugh on my iPhone keyboard swipe typo.
baskire··on Preliminary Incident Statement
The fact one service had an issue. And not only did it take said service down globally, it also impacted dozens of other services...globally.

A good infra architecture has the “blast radius” of any issue confined to only part of your infra fleet. Avoiding the global outage.

Think of it like a navy ship. When a mussel breaches the hull, the ship is designed to contain the leak in a single section. Avoiding the entire ship sinking. Similar pattern is desired in your service and compute infrastructure.

The outage google just faced is equivalent to a single missel taking down an entire navy fleet.

baskire··on Preliminary Incident Statement
Curious how Spotify and other enterprise GCP users have mitigated GCPs repeated global outages. This isn’t their first nor will it be their last.
baskire··on Tesla's market cap now accounts for roughly 1/3rd of the global automaker market
The issue will be battery supply chain. It’s the new ice engine in the supply chain
baskire··on Lenovo seeks to render Nokia's H.264 patents unenforceable
Disagree. Most large app devs directly care about battery life these days.
baskire··on Oracle Moving HQ to Austin
More like jet.
baskire··on Cloud Run adds min instances feature for latency-sensitive apps
That’s false. The policy only covers services being turned down. A-la Google reader style. Not api changes. Not forced sdk/software upgrades. Or pricing changes.
baskire··on FDA Issuing Emergency Use Authorization for First Covid-19 Vaccine
sadly those extra days gained would do little to even put a dent in that figure.
baskire··on Oracle Moving HQ to Austin
If California can claim the work was done in or for California. They’ll tax it. If you work remote from Texas but hr says your desk is in California. You owe California taxes.
baskire··on Cloud Run adds min instances feature for latency-sensitive apps
Worse than that. Its AppEngine Standard vs AppEngine Flex vs Cloud Functions vs Cloud Run vs KNative (Cloud Run, but different).

Oh and if you used AppEngine Standard, you can't move to Flex as Flex came with a whole new set of libraries. And Flex to CloudRun didn't exactly have a seamless migration.

Along the way they changed multiple internals with deprecation causing code base changes. Such-as Memecache, ImageAPI, Monitoring price changes.

I can't imagine any enterprise who's used the ecosystem continuing. The sheer number of architecture impacting changes leads to huge operational overhead costs to maintain applications running on this infrastructure.

baskire··on Improving DNS Privacy with Oblivious DoH
Thus increasing the cloudflare value-prop of anycast based load balancing.
baskire··on Improving DNS Privacy with Oblivious DoH
All I see is a proxy service and a way for cloudflare to get access to the data
baskire··on San Mateo County Health Officer Statement on Bay Area Stay-at-Home Orders
Even if the lockdowns do nothing to stop the spread?

San Mateo county isn’t an average joe middle America bumble-nowhere county. It’s populace is highly educated with the nuance something all can comprehend.

baskire··on San Mateo County Health Officer Statement on Bay Area Stay-at-Home Orders
Bay Area has some busy shipping ports and a lot of commerce flowing throw it.

It’s not within the regions power to shut down the state and interstate highways.

Spread was going to come from the rest of the country no matter what they did.

baskire··on San Mateo County Health Officer Statement on Bay Area Stay-at-Home Orders
They just don’t have the data.

Look I got covid while wearing a mask. Infection was either at a grocery store. Or while walking at a park. Or while at a dog park. Or who knows.

How do you log that in your stats?

baskire··on Cloudflare working on Cloudflare Pages, for deploying and hosting JAMstack
Wouldn’t Wordpress + cdn basically give the same performance but with more functionality.

The only time the request needs to hit the origin is if nobody fetched the page.

baskire··on We read the paper that forced Timnit Gebru out of Google
Energy has a cost. Using 100$ of energy is much different than 1 million.

Capitalism actually mitigates the risk. Companies won’t pay 1 million in R&D to replace 100k of salary.

baskire··on We read the paper that forced Timnit Gebru out of Google
You realize the energy and co2 production to release the paper is greater than the training itself.
baskire··on We read the paper that forced Timnit Gebru out of Google
You do realize just how small this co2 output is compared to the human co2 output it replaces.

You realize the shear scale of co2 output the office the engineers who wrote the model, drove to work, education, etc produced.

I’m actually suprised just how small of a co2 output it was.

Google home was already killed. It’s now the google nest home mini.

The forced transition was the final nail in the coffin to de-google myself.

Even Gmail, can’t trust that it won’t be deprecated in the future.

baskire··on Dropbox saved $75M over two years by building its own infrastructure (2018)
It’s also a lot of cold storage, low iops, moderate throughput. Not high performance compute with random high iops.

Of course it’s cheaper. Compare the cost of an enterprise NAS vs external hdd from bestbuy. It’s a similar comparison here

baskire··on Amazon launches Amazon Pharmacy for prescription medicine delivery
I’m a fan of giving the belief of innocent until proven guilty. You have a firm who’s aligned to cvs making accusations. A firm who’s likely long term going to loose money if Amazon succeeds here.

From that article, “Surescripts did, however, inform CVS and Express Scripts ahead of time about its plans to go public with its decision, the spokesmen said.”

baskire··on Early access to Proton Drive is here
Was curious the cost and storage amount. Had to dig into the faq just to find out how much storage was involved.

getting pricing and storage for the offering took me at least 10 clicks. Honestly it turned me off from the product suite.
