Posts like these are fun.

OP, I am now curious about using Docker to manage dotfiles and some installs. Could you tell us more about it, or give some resources to get started?

Thank you for the link, I'm going to have a look at that.

Two other tools do similar things too:

- Datawi.re, by Annabel Church [1]

- Stream Tools, by the NYT [2]

Or why you shouldn't do the doc last minute! Any suggestions here are very welcome.

To have a look at some snippets, I would recommend going through the wizard, then cracking open one of the examples. The plumbing is a bit overly-complicated, though, I am sure there is a way to make queries in a simpler way.

Hey, well done! Got my first after putting together immigration stats from many European countries and making a nice viz out of it.

A very large part of the work is configured by the user, and the "alerts configuration page" is not yet functional.

Here is a screenshot of the alerts I received this morning: http://imgur.com/vG0PqDf

The alert was set for London Euston area.

I will add an issue to the repo because, as you see, the styling is not very pretty - and the wording is far from eloquent!

Hehe, yes, there's an opened issue about the install process on Mac - we couldn't perform tests over the weekend!

Cron wouldn't work on Windows either, by the way.

Yeah, we thought about a demo. It was kind of hard to picture a way to demo it, given that you can't really see it in action. Any suggestions welcome.

Re: Google Alerts - you're right... to a certain extent. Here, you can mash up datasets, compile them, tweak them, THEN and only then compare them to parameters you set. Alerts++, then.

Haha! It's a bit the same for me, my Facebook post is going a wee bit crazy right now.

I was more hoping for a hate thread. As it is how I feel at this moment.

Couldn't write the whole name, as the headline is limited to 80 chars. Sorry.
basilesimon··on In 2013, so many people still search for a site instead of writing the URL
Nah, just telling me how do you behave when it comes to typing URLs will do the job :)
basilesimon··on In 2013, so many people still search for a site instead of writing the URL
The Google homepage seems like a very valid point. But when you open a new tab, you are typing in the address bar - and the autocompletion is enabled.

Ah, the irritative arrogance. I am quite happy about it because it led to a fair amount of exchanges about what I wrote, including yours. What I really can't understand is - and my point of view is very likely to be biaised by my own experience - why do people do not go for the fastest and what seems to me the easiest way? I'm very sure you can help me with that.

When talking about webpages consulted on a regular basis (like facebook, for example), thanks to the 'omniboxes', there is no such thing as URLs anymore, don't you think? The browser does all the work in a few keyboard hits.
basilesimon··on In 2013, so many people still search for a site instead of writing the URL
I can't find it on Wikipedia. If you do, please let me know so I can update the article.

Did not think about that. It would be worth exploring the difference in the top searches in, say Europe/US and in Asia or the Gulf.

I do the same for my bank and some e-commerce websites.

However, I never do that for websites I read daily. Either I know the URL or the browser remembers it for me.

Apart for exceptions (deliberately trying to find the good url or finding a specific website), searching is illogical.

That would be exactly like asking your GPS the way from work to home every single day.

If it was their intention, why introducing autocompletion - a functionality which, if used correctly, allows to avoid search engines for queries.
