basetensucks··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (September 2026)
I've been working on `ankix` (https://github.com/joshgummersall/ankix), a CLI tool to turn YouTube/podcast transcripts, Kindle highlights, and other text into "glossed" (read: contextually translated) Anki cards using a local `ollama` model.

I've also been working on `summond` (https://github.com/joshgummersall/summond), a developer/agent friendly way to interact with OSX Launch Control. It aims to support all relevant Launch Control triggers using a nice `toml` config format, dynamic environment control, logs, and more. I've found it super useful and it's dotfile friendly.

basetensucks··on A Claude Code skill that recovers export-blocked Kindle highlights
I was able to extract "looked up" words (with surrounding context) from the on-device Sqlite database. Example code: https://github.com/joshgummersall/ankix/blob/main/internal/k...

It's not perfect, but it's usually enough context to produce a decent translation.

basetensucks··on Bringing down my ZSH load times from ~3.1s to ~230ms
Adopting https://github.com/marlonrichert/zsh-snap was probably the best decision I've made around zsh in the last five years.
basetensucks··on Run TypeScript code without worrying about configuration
It does more, it also includes a compatibility layer allowing you to require ESM packages in CJS. It's quite handy!

SEEKING WORK | Remote | Principal Engineer | React / Next.js Specialist

Location: Seattle, WA, USA

Remote: Yes

Willing to relocate: No

Email: josh@standardlabs.dev

Website: https://standardlabs.dev

Resume: https://standardlabs.dev/resume

I’m a U.S.-based principal engineer with 10+ years of experience, specializing in JavaScript, React, and Next.js. I help product teams ship fast, modernize legacy frontends, and solve tough architectural problems without adding tech debt. I’m a strong written communicator — ideal for async, remote-first teams.

Highlights

- Refactored complex React apps for performance and maintainability

- Migrated production apps to Next.js for improved SSR and data handling

- Boosted Core Web Vitals and Lighthouse scores

I’m currently available for remote, part-time or short-term contract work. If your team could use a senior partner to move faster and cleaner, let’s talk.

basetensucks··on iOS database app: collections database
Excellent app! Used to create tables in the Notes app but this is way more useful. Will be upgrading shortly. Thank you!
basetensucks··on Ask HN: Please share tips and strategies for dealing with eye strain
I use a Mac app called Lunar (https://lunar.fyi) to control the brightness/contrast of my external monitor. The app uses your location to automatically brighten or dim your monitor depending on the time of day. For me, it’s well worth the money. The developer also promptly replied to a question sent via email and solved my problem.

https://github.com/ibraheemdev/modern-unix is a pretty decent list.
basetensucks··on Show HN: Covid Trace
Howdy HN, I'm part of a small team in Seattle, WA that worked over the last 2 weeks to put together a contact tracing app that is focused on user privacy. The app works by recording your location history for a 3 week period and then comparing it against the location history of reported COVID-19 infections. All of the comparisons happen on your phone, so your location history never leaves your device unless you report an infection.

Our app is ready to launch in the Google and Apple app stores, but they have changed their requirements for anything COVID related, which means we have to partner with a recognized institution. We are working as quickly as possible to find a partner. If anyone has a promising contact that might be able to help, please let me know!

Happy to answer any questions as well.

basetensucks··on Ask HN: How do you organize and manage database migrations?
+1 for Sqitch. If you include a full deploy -> verify -> revert -> deploy flow in your automated testing suite you can pretty safely introduce changes that can be rolled back without issue. This has served my team well on several complicated databases over the past two years.
basetensucks··on Ask HN: Any unfinished side projects to give away?
Heh, no I’m not and yes I did see it. That was actually what made me stop working on the project.
basetensucks··on Ask HN: Any unfinished side projects to give away?
I started writing a budgeting app very similar to YNAB. Had basic integration with the Plaid API, Next.js (React) with PostgREST and Postgres, Auth0, Bootstrap among some other things.

Edit: feel free to reach out via email in my profile.

basetensucks··on Ask HN: Is anyone using Google Cloud Platform for a non-trivial project?
Using it for several low to high traffic web apps. Using GKE, Storage, managed Postgres, Redis, Global Load Balancers, custom VPC networking with VPN to AWS and more. All managed via Terraform. Very capable and production ready in my experience.
basetensucks··on Ask HN: Personal finance software
YNAB [0] is great if you can get behind their somewhat unique budgeting system. It is a subscription product but is easily the most valuable subscription product I use.

basetensucks··on Ask HN: “Expert Level” JavaScript questions?
Like any good interview question it leaves a lot of room for the candidate to take the lead, ask questions and define the scope of the problem. These are all useful skills to assess for a senior position.

Of course an hour long interview is not enough time to implement the full Promise spec but it should be enough time to gauge the level of a candidate.

basetensucks··on Ask HN: “Expert Level” JavaScript questions?
Reimplement things from scratch. I’d recommend implementing Promises from scratch as well as several Async [0] functions like auto or series. Both are questions I’ve asked of senior level JS/Node engineers. This isn’t exhaustive but it’s good practice for sure. Good luck!

basetensucks··on Ask HN: Most effective path to become a solid systems practitioner?
Starting to feel like a parrot since I’ve recommended this book a few times already on HN but Designing Data Intensive Applications [0] is a great starting resource. I’m not affiliated in any way just a happy reader.

basetensucks··on Ask HN: Any recommended resources to better understand distributed systems?
Designing Data Intensive Applications [0] is a pretty complete and thorough starting point.

Not the author, just a happy reader.

basetensucks··on Cost Effectiveness of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction
I agree with you to a degree, but I think you might be missing a major benefit mindfulness meditation. In particular, mindfulness meditation helps you to reprogram the way you relate to experiences and thoughts in a way that, in my experience, does eliminate stress.

In other words, my relationship with experiences and thoughts can tend to be either more objective or more subjective (perhaps reactive is a better word). The more objectively I view things, the less those things elicit a stress response. Again, this is in my experience and might not be universally true.

Sure there are stimuli that, for most people, will always elicit a stressful response. I would guess (emphasis on the word guess) this comprises at most ~10% of a person’s thoughts and experiences which is likely much less than most people think.

Anyways, just my two cents.

basetensucks··on Ask HN: What office chair do you use?
I use a Herman Miller Aeron and have nothing but good things to say about it.
basetensucks··on How to use Let's Encypt with Google Cloud Platform
+1 well worth checking this tool out. Saved me a lot of effort setting up a GCP Kubernetes deployment two months ago. So far it has been a matter of set it and forget it.
basetensucks··on Ask HN: How do you deal with anxiety?
Meditation works well for me. The trick is you need to be consistent and patient. Try out the Calm app (my favorite), Headspace, or read "The Mind Illuminated" and start practicing daily.
basetensucks··on Ask HN: What do you eat for breakfast everyday?
I've been drinking a smoothie for breakfast the past few weeks.

- 240g almond milk - 40g figs - 85g spinach/chard mix - 3G spirulina - 12g chia seeds - 100g apple - 32g peanut butter - 38g "naked" chocolate whey protein - 60g frozen beets - 70g frozen blueberries - 4g fresh ginger - 2g turmeric - 2g cinnamon

It's right around 850 calories with a good blend of carbs, protein, fat, and dietary fiber. A good high speed blender is crucial to ensure the final product is drinkable.

basetensucks··on Turning the database inside-out with Apache Samza (2015)
Another vote for this, it's an excellent book.
basetensucks··on Book Review: Designing Distributed Control Systems
I've found this book to be quite solid so far: http://shop.oreilly.com/product/0636920032175.do

I'm about a quarter to half of the way through and it's been interesting and quite thorough even though it's still a "beta" book. The content is a little high level so some familiarity with distributed systems principles is useful but the text is very approachable and easy to understand (so far).

I got it after seeing several recommendations in other HN threads so I'm not the only person that has found it useful.

basetensucks··on Ask HN: How to create a long lasting relationship?
I found "The Like Switch" to be an interesting and useful guide in building relationships. It's written by an ex-FBI agent that successfully built relationships with various, often hard to reach individuals using the techniques that he writes about in the book.
basetensucks··on Does It Make Sense for Programmers to Move to the Bay Area?
I paged through - the rent price estimates in Seattle strike me as low. Obviously I don't have strong statistics to back this up but when I looked for one bedroom apartments a year and a half ago everything was at least $1700 and many were not in the city center. Prices have increased considerably since then.
basetensucks··on Ask HN: How do you set up your Mac?
Ansible handles applying configuration and settings. Configuration and settings are stored in a git repo and symlinked wherever necessary. I wrote a zsh function (that I'm reminded to invoke once daily) that handles any updates, including pulling repo changes and anything else Ansible thinks it needs to do. Has been working well for me for quite some time.
