Mindboggling.

Its not even a new google service. its a google labs service. its experimental so they can learn and they will shut it down.
basch··on The new CC, an AI agent built for families
>multiple sources

how about when a kid has 7 classes, and each teacher says to just check the google doc within google classroom where they each type daily notes into unstructured tables that are each different for each class oh and parents dont actually have their own google classroom login they are just supposed to log into the kids account.

Also, family management is so *fundamentally broken* that it's disheartening and almost laughable that priority is ai over global acl management. There should not be a separate parental control dashboard for roblox, fortnite, instagram, tiktok, etc etc etc etc. Every app should be REQUIRED to expose all parental controls in a standard protocol upstream to identity management that is manageable by multiple management accounts in a family unit. I should be able to go into settings, click a kid, turn off chat for a child, and it instantly updates on my partners phone without needing an account at the service itself to manage it and knowing the ins and outs of how their parental controls are evolving weekly. Family settings should exist ABOVE any single user account and apply to all accounts to any service linked within the family.

basch··on I don't want to read what you didn't write
>but the AIs slowly start to drift.

It's essentially the tower of babel. Each person will devolve to speak their own internal language only they understand. Each language will need to be encoded down to its meaning to be reinterpreted. None of us will know if the transformers are accurately decoding, or if the other person is accurately interpreting the decoding (which is arguably already a feature of human language without the computers in-between.)

I dont have to be an expert to recognize when something is said with authority and confidence. Any time a model says something with conviction, my instinct is to double check.

Now if they taught them to express uncertainty and speak in terms of probability, I might be more likely to be blindly fooled by some kind of uncertain conviction.

basch··on Chat-based Large Language Models replicate the mechanisms of a psychic's con
It's also not necessarily implausible that AI/we decide that performance is better with humans in the loop somewhere, even if its reduced to something like mechanical turk.
basch··on AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible
youve got to get rid of the list with the icons as bullets. vertical or 3-4 of them horizontally is a dead giveaway.

your posters also dont suffer it, but most of the ones in the wild have 3-7 extra catchphrases or taglines thrown all over the poster. same but different. this but that. not this that. chatgpt just really likes to add phases and annotations all over posters.

basch··on The LLMentalist Effect (2023)
“Good enough to replace humans” isn’t necessarily the benchmark.

The question is is a computer with a human stronger than a computer without a human. At what point does the hybrid go from being stronger, to the human getting in the way, or steering the computer in more wrong directions that right ones, or the human not being able to keep up. Does the human add enough extra randomness to be of value for a while, even as a minor co-processor.

basch··on I don't like passkeys
put it in your password manager?
basch··on I don't like passkeys
but you can type anything in the recovery box.

its just three additional passwords.

should you type the same brother name in each time? should you even answer with a name?

don't get me wrong, they were insane, but they can be repurposed.

basch··on I don't like passkeys
When was the last time you tried to log into something like Google, Apple, Microsoft etc without your phone nearby, on a fresh computer?
basch··on I don't like passkeys
What if my phone is dead? Stolen?

In the same vein as 2fa, going up to a fresh computer and trying to log into anything is now a nightmare. Every service has a 2fa that somehow loops into another provider that also has 2fa.

And some 2fa, if not many, make accounts weaker. Apple's solution to get around 2fa is to put in SOMEBODY ELSES phone number that I trust, as a backdoor. It's an insane solution. And its normalized, and nobody questions it.

It’s literally translation technology told to guess what’s most likely next instead of translate what it was given.

It makes total sense it’s good at regurgitating the edge cases of language.

basch··on Sovereign: A Unified GPU Inference Substrate (Fractal Memory, Manifold Routing)
Am I looking at the academic theater of sycophantic LLM fed cranky prompts?

"fractal recursive residual coding" = 45% size reduction per iteration after 13 passes of the output of LZMA2 piped back into LZMA2? If true, that alone is crazy.

basch··on IKEA made a mod for Skyrim [video]
That would apply to like a competitor, right? Another store that copies their motif to fool customers.

Has a court enforced trade dress with a mock version of a store within a game?

Would a reasonable person, seeing completely different letters actually think IKEA is sponsoring the game?

I would give IKEA almost a 0% chance of winning that case if both sides had equally sized pocketbooks. (see E.S.S. Entertainment v. Rock Star Videos (2008))

basch··on Show HN: Hacker News, without AI
Nice. The word "show" threw me off, given it is on the far right and the cog is on the far left. Menu, settings, config etc would make more sense.
basch··on Show HN: Hacker News, without AI
still prefer the simplicity of a reverse river, with a focus on votes and comments https://hckrnews.com/

its incredibly easy to immediately tell when something was posted, and how popular it was. there s no automagic rearranging or movement.

basch··on Thanks to Siri Recaps, your Apple Watch is always listening
tap to pay is handy, i would wear something just for that if it lasted all week on a charge.

having a fitness / sleep tracker that i cant wear while i sleep cuz it needs to charge defeats the purpose. doesnt quite fill during a shower.

apple also made it prohibitively cumbersome / confusing to own two devices that boot up to identical instances. why cant i have two pieces of hardware, and whichever one i pick up resumes the session. i dont want them to have two configurations, i want them to mirror each other, if a setting changes on one, it changes on the other.

basch··on Analyzing student votes across AI models for college essay help
>They're also moving toward more in-person writing. Instead of long essays, shorter writing segments as part of the test

Why did this ever go away? That was a completely regular part of college a decade plus ago.

How many of the college students voting have years of ai use under their belt, where ai voice itself has shaped and influenced their stylistic choices of language preference?

Stillwater you can probably start at birth, if you need something to put you to sleep, which you will. Kiddo can listen without watching.
basch··on Tracking Costco gas prices
Costco isnt losing $10. They can sell gas at cost to run a gas station if they want to. They break even and get people there instead of a normal gas station.
basch··on Screen viewing time from age 1 to 8 years and subsequent academic performance
When you do introduce some video, which is easy to slip into around 18 months, there is tons of good stuff.

Stillwater, Shape Island, Slumberkins, Interrupting Chicken, Not a Box, Duck and Goose, Frog and Toad, Get Rolling with Otis and Snoopy are all on Apple TV.

Tumble Leaf, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, Creative Galaxy, Stinky and Dirty, Fireman Sam Classic are on Prime.

PBS still exists for now.

Caitie's Classroom / Super Simple is on Youtube, Prime, and Spotify.

basch··on Screen viewing time from age 1 to 8 years and subsequent academic performance
Apple TV is an available option though. Saying "screen time" vs "low effort stimulating content" muddies the conversation around it being the screen itself and not the contents of the media.
