Did... not... know... this. Very cool.
bas··on How Would You Do on the New SAT?
For instance, "100 boys and girls in the class". I read that as 100 students total, not 100 of each.
bas··on A new way police are surveilling: Calculating threat ‘score’
Remember that SWATting is a thing.
bas··on Who Hacked Ashley Madison?
1998 is calling: http://www.davidbrin.com/transparentsociety.html

Also, from 1999, "You have zero privacy anyway, ... Get over it." (Scott McNealy - http://archive.wired.com/politics/law/news/1999/01/17538)

bas··on A concept of haptic feedback from holograms
At SIGGRAPH a few years ago in New Orleans, I saw this concept demonstrated by a Japanese group: http://phys.org/news168797748.html
bas··on Comcast: Simulating shitty network connections so you can build better systems
This is a beautifully-named project.

Perhaps a decade ago, I was roped into maintaining Palm apps written in VB and deployed with AppForge (http://www.techrepublic.com/article/appforge-palm-developmen...).

In a sense, tools like these were the precursors of today's mobile cross-compilers and cross-platform development environments (e.g. Unity).

Looks great! I love the lighting on the inn/house.
bas··on If The Moon Was Only 1 Pixel
Yes! One of my pet peeves (philosophy major).

"We will be closely monitoring the situation and will react accordingly."

No doubt written from an undisclosed beach.

bas··on Brazil, Europe plan undersea cable to skirt U.S. spying
Talking to or knowing someone from Eastern Europe may disabuse you of this notion.
bas··on Brazil, Europe plan undersea cable to skirt U.S. spying
Presumably, the intelligence community would not make it known that it knew such things; they could then use these lines in disinformative ways.
bas··on Google Security Team Member on NSA: "Fuck These Guys"
The moral of the story is that there is always a bigger fish.
bas··on The Government Shutdown Has Revealed Silicon Valley’s Dysfunction Fetish
Not to mention a certain Fort Meade-based agency that had them apoplectic with rage.
bas··on NSA to cut system administrators by 90 percent to limit data access
I don't see them cutting Booz off. I do see them enforcing stricter standards for employing contractors. Prospects lacking either an elite degree or distinguished military service are likely to encounter significant resistance to employment within the National Business Park and its environs.

Exactly. Well said.

bas··on Employer Tipped Off Police In Pressure Cooker/Backpack-gate, Not Google
Well said. At least there are a few islands of sanity on HN.

She has a Forbes "site", which is not exactly the same thing as being a writer "for Forbes". She's really a blogger, not an editor or staff member at Forbes per se.
bas··on Ask HN: Take down my reverse-engineered Snapchat lib because they asked?
forked. 80+
bas··on Text of letter to Edward Snowden from his father and father’s attorney
How DARE he compare this to Omaha Beach, even obliquely! Many of the men in this picture, fighting one of the greatest land armies ever assembled (the Wehrmacht), died on this shore, never to return home: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a5/Into_the_...

Snowden's obstacles are a revoked passport and the charges he faces upon his inevitable return to the United States.

bas··on Why We Spy on Our Allies (2000)
I am certain (seriously) that is supported by neither the German government nor its people, but it's worth noting that German firms have illegally (according to German law) supplied Iran's nuclear program with embargoed technology. While this understandably gives little comfort to German citizens, I am guessing (given the monetary, administrative, and foreign policy costs of overreach) that the NSA is more interested in this kind of thing than particular details of Green Party politics.

bas··on Snowden sought Booz Allen job to gather evidence on NSA surveillance
Precisely. How is this not espionage?
bas··on Obama’s crackdown views leaks as aiding enemies of U.S.
You can't be serious. If a 9/11 were to happen every year, then the police state you dream of would obtain.
bas··on SSH into your EC2 instances with ease
Welcome to Hacker News, where things that were obvious ten years ago require blog posts (and page traffic) today. Sigh.
bas··on Snowden: US govt has been hacking HK and China for years.
"Snowden said that according to unverified documents seen by the Post, the NSA had been hacking computers in Hong Kong and on the mainland since 2009. None of the documents revealed any information about Chinese military systems, he said.

One of the targets in the SAR, according to Snowden, was Chinese University and public officials, businesses and students in the city. The documents also point to hacking activity by the NSA against mainland targets."

I can only think that he's planning on defecting. This statement alone would imprison him for decades.
