barryhoodlum··on Overcoming Tab Overload
I think it's just an information hoarding mentality. Like people you see on hoarding TV shows with stacks upon stacks of old newspapers just in case they "need" to refer to them one day.
barryhoodlum··on Barrier Reef doomed as up to 99% of coral at risk, report finds
The world doesn't work in this "bottom up" way. It's top down.

You could say the same about a "nothing bad will ever happen" opinion like yours, except a different group benefits from it.
barryhoodlum··on The Great Software Stagnation
Doesn't it? You can google "how to make iphone app" (or whatever) and get a wealth of videos, blog posts, guides, tutorials, github repositories. You can join online communities to learn and ask questions. You can download all the tools for free.

My early days of programming were tinkering in BASIC and asking my parents to buy me "Learn C in 24 days" type books and hoping the compilers on the bundled CD would actually work. I had very few resources and had nobody to ask if I got stuck, except for other kids who didn't know much more than me. Seems a lot better now.

Neither React or Redux use proxies or setters at all. Are you thinking of a different framework?

Ocaml does this too.
barryhoodlum··on Well, duh (1996)
There's one footnote that ends up being a punchline, about five words long. The few seconds spent flipping from the page to the footnote lent it a certain comedic timing that would usually be impossible to portray in a book. That really stood out in my mind and I don't think it'd be quite the same by clicking a hyperlink.
barryhoodlum··on Thinking in React Hooks
I think it's just because that style isn't widespread in JS in general? I don't think it's anything to do with hooks or React particularly.
barryhoodlum··on In U.K. Vote, Online Disinformation Is the New Normal
Trying to make improvements for who, and why? That's the important part, and why politics gets so heated. You sound like you're talking about choosing between slightly different flavours of ice cream.

The "left-wing" media? Who is that exactly?

barryhoodlum··on Music Generates Feelings That Are Only Weakly Bound to the Music
I always associate The Smashing Pumpkins with Doom because of this. By coincidence, one of their songs actually has a Doom sound effect in it.

barryhoodlum··on Why All of Our Games Look Like Crap
I'm not saying he's not successful. He's implying you either have shoddy graphics, or spend big money on AAA graphics. But they're not the only two choices, and that's proven - there are successful games without AAA graphics that also don't look bad. If he's feeding his family on his games, changing his attitude to their appearance could expand his audience significantly for relatively minor effort.
barryhoodlum··on Why All of Our Games Look Like Crap
But his games don't sit where he thinks they sit. It's baffling as there's a huge market for "retro" looking indie games, and has been for a decade or so. Plenty of successful and influential indie games made by a small team (or even a solo developer) in the past decade have been really successful despite looking like they could run on an NES or a Commodore 64, with limited palettes and chunky graphics. But there's a difference between that and what appears to be placeholder programmer art.
barryhoodlum··on Terminating Service for 8Chan
Having it out in the open also attracts the users in the first place.
barryhoodlum··on Simone de Beauvoir, The Art of Fiction No. 35 (1965)
From the article: "A woman psychoanalyst wrote me a very intelligent letter in which she said that “in the last analysis, desires always go far beyond the object of desire.” The fact is that I’ve had everything I desired, but the “far beyond” which is included in the desire itself is not attained when the desire has been fulfilled."

I took "being" to include being somehow immersed in the "far beyond" once the desired lifestyle is met. Like realising you're in a dream without eventually waking up.

barryhoodlum··on HTML is the Web
I wonder how much of this is about the author's ego. They can't or don't want to delve into the (admittedly labyrinthine) world of JS, so there must be a matching lack of ability on "the other side".
barryhoodlum··on Ask HN: Do you keep a personal knowledge repository?
I do the exact same, down to the "notes" alias. I find the downside to this approach is it doesn't work well on mobile - the Dropbox app can edit files but there's no search and it all feels a bit clunky.
barryhoodlum··on The Metrics of Backpacks
Hope you guys manage to convince your wives to watch some sci fi!
barryhoodlum··on The Metrics of Backpacks
In the context of the article, it is shallow.
barryhoodlum··on MIDI Maze
But having the concept of per-note pitchbend built into MIDI itself would be a much easier way of achieving this.

Their point wasn't "sliding notes in a chord is 100% impossible, prove me wrong!", their point was that the only reason it's not trivial in the first place is because MIDI is biased towards piano keyboards, and that has had a huge influence on a lot of the music released in the past few decades.

barryhoodlum··on Vaping Is big tobacco’s bait and switch
For what it's worth, I had the same experience. Vaped for a year - the first few months I switched between vaping and real cigarettes, then vaping only. Went down a few levels until I got to 3mg liquid. Found 0mg unsatisfying, so I took the plunge and threw my vaping gear away - cold turkey. It was bizarrely easy. I've tried and failed numerous times and it was just easy. Over two years later and I haven't looked back. I haven't been the slightest bit tempted to smoke or vape and I know I never will - it's like a switch has been flipped in my head. I'm free!

This isn't everyone's experience but I think it's common enough to not just write off as propaganda. I can't prove I'm not some socketpuppet account but this felt real to me.

React is not reactive, despite the name. Puts your comment in a different light.
barryhoodlum··on With React 16.8, React Hooks are available in a stable release
I said nothing about loving, or even liking, hooks or React itself. That's not the point. It's weighing in with a completely useless opinion based on a second's thought, over and over again.

There are trade offs and it's interesting to discuss those and to criticise them. But a kneejerk reaction can't go that far.

barryhoodlum··on With React 16.8, React Hooks are available in a stable release
Yes, it gets a bit tedious seeing 90% of comments on HN being from people who clearly haven't tried the thing, or even given it any thought or consideration beyond an initial "this is not familiar to me so therefore bad!" kneejerk reaction. It's not a great look for a developer and I don't know why they seem so proud of their close-minded attitude.
