barry0079··on Krukenberg procedure
Burkhard Heim, linked to at the bottom seems like a very interesting fellow.
barry0079··on Ask HN: Is there anyone with whom I can do remote research work?
Have you tried contacting any academic staff from your degree you're on good terms with?
barry0079··on Ask HN: Laid off after 2 months. What exactly should I be doing?
Mention them during interviews. You can't expect people to ask about the things that make you great. You have to use the things that make you great to justify yourself in interviews.
barry0079··on Civ 5 AI battle – All 43 Civs on same map [video]
I love SEIV. I had no idea there was still an active community.
barry0079··on Ask HN: Has anyone gone from work to academia post mid 30's?
I think it's only weird if you make it weird. I often spent time with the older students on my course.
barry0079··on Ask HN: What would you do with $100K cash?
Does backpacking around the world interest you? Experience is a worthwhile investment.
barry0079··on EU GDPR – Another reason for SaaS to reconsider on-premise
According to ICO guidelines: "Where requests are manifestly unfounded or excessive, in particular because they are repetitive, you can:

charge a reasonable fee taking into account the administrative costs of providing the information; or refuse to respond."

I wonder if that would apply to the letter?

barry0079··on Ask HN: Strong hacker == Strong coder?
I think strong hacking skills has it's time and place. Especially when testing the waters or creating proof of concepts.
barry0079··on FlightSimLabs Alleged Malware Analysis
The silliest part of this is pirates usually get to enjoy a better product because of their actions.
barry0079··on [dead]
The author claims to have had no funding for this research. Perhaps it is undergraduate work?
barry0079··on Ask HN: Besides technical interviews, how would you want to be evaluated?
I really like this idea, however that's far too long a time investment for an interview. Perhaps monthly events on a weekend with a potential to be recruited?
barry0079··on Reality has a surprising amount of detail (2017)
The problem isn't people not admitting ignorance online. The problem is that the internet might be the cause of people not admitting ignorance in real life.
barry0079··on Ask HN: Travelling to the US. What can I expect at border security?
And this is what all border security want to know. "Do you have money to spend?"
barry0079··on A decentralised Universal Basic Income platform based on personal currencies
I enjoyed this read far more than I expected. I'm sceptical about the abusability of validators however. Overall though it makes me wish I could run a social experiment implementing this idea just to see what would happen.
barry0079··on Ask HN: What are the best books to (re)discover philosophy?
An excellent entry point and no doubt also a way to rekindle your thinking.
barry0079··on Introduction to logic programming with Prolog
When writing a Prolog program a while ago I stumbled across an old mailing list where someone posted the following joke. Q. "How many Prolog Programmers does it take to change a lightbulb?" A. No.
barry0079··on Ask HN: In your company, how important is code quality vs. getting things done
I just tried this out. It works beautifully. Thankyou so much.
barry0079··on Ask HN: In your company, how important is code quality vs. getting things done
When did planning and design stop being the first stage of a sprint? Agile doesn't mean start writing code before planning and requirements gathering.
barry0079··on Ask HN: In your company, how important is code quality vs. getting things done
I'm honestly mostly fine with sticking to the PEP8 standards but not being able to submit code simply because something wasn't written in an imperative mode is absurd to me.
barry0079··on Ask HN: In your company, how important is code quality vs. getting things done
I'll take these comments to heart and think about it. However when implementing an algorithm I prefer to write out the algorithm in mathematical notation in the comments which will obviously explain the names of the variables. If someone reading the code can't understand it they couldn't anyway. I just find PEP8 very inflexible and my work mate has slowed a one month project down to 4 months and counting with his attitude towards the work and we're massively behind schedule.
barry0079··on Ask HN: In your company, how important is code quality vs. getting things done
The guy I work with implemented pep8 tests into unit testing. So now I can't submit code unless it meets stupid criteria like line length and function descriptions phrased very specifically. He also complains at me for using mathematically named variables in my functions. I do not believe this is code quality and it just hampers my ability to work.
barry0079··on Ask HN: How did you meet your spouse?
You would be amazed at how sexy "shitty rock" bands are.
barry0079··on Ask HN: What does your company spend too much money on?
I don't see why they wouldn't leave. They will have the experience to earn much more.
barry0079··on Don't Feed Them After Midnight: Reverse-Engineering the Furby Connect
"while the FURBY CONNECT toy is in a "woke" state" I couldn't help but chuckle at this.
barry0079··on I don’t want to be a software developer anymore
I held a similar opinion until I saw an amazing wedding photographer work her magic. That was a highly skilled job with a lot of work and effort and knowledge at play.
barry0079··on New Uber CEO Knew of Hack for Months
The PR damage to the company would be much greater due to people speculating a worst case scenario. Followed up by the fact people wouldn't care anymore when the investigation is finished.
barry0079··on Belgium says loot boxes are gambling, wants them banned in Europe
Could one argue that adding a small consolation prize to loot boxes overcome the gambling issue with them? "Here is your item that you paid for, oh also here is a random extra lottery item."
barry0079··on What's your salary?
Graduate Data Scientist - £22k ($29k) - Southeast UK. I should probably look for a new job, I get no training.
barry0079··on Google translates German “halb zwei” to French “deux heures et demie”: 1h off
It's a shortening of "half past two". Or half the hour past two of the clock.
