barrowclift··on Ask HN: More tech-oriented HN alternative?
I tend to agree and solved this for myself by building a small, self-hosted service that auto-hides Hacker News stories by title keyword/regex, site, or user. That way you can have more control over auto-curating your Hacker News page, instead of having to invest time in a whole new community. If you have a Raspberry Pi or small VM somewhere, consider giving it a try!

barrowclift··on Ask HN: How do you secure your Mac?
While I strongly advise avoiding traditional "antivirus" software like Symantec, EtreCheck[1] if a wonderful diagnostic tool for checking your Mac's general health. Included in that health check is a full disk sweep for any known adware. I used it just this past year to help identify and remove some adware on my parents' computer just this past year, and would highly recommend.

I'm unable to get the domain name to resolve, Chrome's telling me the IP address for www.humanreadablemag.com can't be found. Is anyone else getting this?
barrowclift··on Ask HN: What are some great personal blogs/portfolios?
If self-promotion is allowed in this context, I'd like to suggest my own website as a good example: https://barrowclift.me
barrowclift··on Show HN: X-spreadsheet – A JavaScript canvas spreadsheet for web
Fun concept, but the cell text is blurry to the point of being a distraction for me, unfortunately. Is this a side effect of rendering to a canvas?

If you use macOS, Safari since Mountain Lion has consistently hit all three of those checkboxes for me, you might want to consider giving it a shot.
barrowclift··on Less annoying Hacker News
For those that are interested, I took a slightly different approach by making a “Hacker News Cleanser service that will periodically hide articles based on title keywords, site, and user.

barrowclift··on Show HN: ResponsiveDevices.css – responsive device frames for your demo page
While neat technically speaking, I unfortunately can't say the result is acceptable for any kind of professional work, in my opinion.

For example, take a close look at the iPhone X in the "Device Library" list, the device and "notch" borders are butchered beyond recognition. A key component of the iPhone X's brand are the particular rounded corners used for the notch, and if the point of this project is to closely emulate particular devices instead of generic ones, it woefully missed the mark.

To be fair, I can't speak for the accuracy for the other devices included, but if their implementations are at all similar to the iPhone X's, I'd expect they are also poor representations.

I highly encourage mapping the Escape key to the Caps Lock key for a couple days and seeing how it feels. I gave it a spin last year out of curiosity and have since fallen in love with it. My poor pinky no longer has to frequently stretch out to the farthest upper left reaches of the keyboard!

If you're on macOS, you can do this in System Preferences > Keyboard > Modifier Keys... and selecting the "Escape" in the Caps Lock dropdown.

If you use Safari, this functionality is built in, no sketchy plugin required. You can save the CSS snippet from the provided link as a file somewhere on your disk, then select the style sheet in Safari > Preferences > Advanced.

It's useful for loads of other cases too. For example, I have mine wrapping Hacker News's <pre> elements so I don't have to horizontally scroll for miles while trying to read.

barrowclift··on Show HN: Grep with colours written in Go
That makes sense. In a way, it's like they're mental "speed bumps" that disrupt reading the text. I can certainly see why those "bumps" would be aggravating, thanks for the insight!
barrowclift··on Show HN: Grep with colours written in Go
Genuinely curious, why do some developers prefer not having colors for ls, grep, etc.? no-color.org mentions that many users prefer having colors disabled, but didn't list any reasons why.
barrowclift··on I've finally found a Windows laptop worth ditching the MacBook for
I agree, it’s not fair to say it sucks. However, there is something to be said for having a Unix-based OS without having to sacrifice first-party apps. While Ubuntu and some other flavors have certainly gotten increased support from big players over the years (like Steam), for lots of people there’s still no substitute for the immediately available first party apps on Windows and macOS.

To offer another perspective, I prefer iTunes over the available alternatives on macOS simply because it's the only player out there that addresses my (admittedly niche) requirements:

* A nice grid view for albums, which is the only view I ever use (so the clunky UI that rightfully irritates users that need to switch views isn't a concern for me)

* A freely resizable album art player, which can still be launched by command+clicking the album art in the menu "display". Alternatively, I'd prefer something like the Apple TV's player view, but as far as I'm aware there's nothing on macOS like it.

For what it's worth, if your player supports even one of those points, it'd be an immediate purchase for me. :)
