barrongineer··on Svelte 5: Runes
Svelte has never looked more like Vue to me. I don't mean this as a dig, I think it looks great.

It's just even less obvious to me why I might pick it over Vue at this point.

barrongineer··on Svelte 4
Really? Feature realease v3.3 was released just last month...

barrongineer··on Thoughts on Svelte(Kit), one year and 3B requests later
Just curious why you preferred SvelteKit to Nuxt? Literally every single thing you said of SvelteKit is also true of Nuxt.

I like them both, but tend to lean more toward Nuxt for the modules ecosystem and layers/extends. I also find composing reusable props with typescript to be nicer in Nuxt, but that's more of a Vue vs Svelte thing than Nuxt vs SvelteKit.

barrongineer··on Thoughts on Svelte(Kit), one year and 3B requests later
This description of Nuxt 3 couldn't be further from reality. Performance is on par with anything else I've tried (SvelteKit, Remix, Next) and the DX (module ecosystem, layers, auto imports, vite, etc ) are actually what's made it my default.
barrongineer··on New React docs pretend SPAs don't exist anymore
Typically with SSR, only the initial load is server rendered. Subsequent navigations are client rendered.
barrongineer··on Ask HN: Go-to web stack today?
Go with the Buffalo framework and Vue.

The "Search with Bing..." feature will open in whatever the default browser is.
barrongineer··on Goodbye, EdgeHTML
I tried to switch to firefox a few months ago, but it had no way to view websocket frames in the dev tools. This was kind of a deal breaker for me at the time as I was doing a lot of ws work. Have they remedied this?
barrongineer··on Brave Browser is taking the web by storm
Brave is now based on Chromium. You can install extensions from the Chrome web store just as you would in Chrome.

To me, Brave is just Chrome without all the Google stuff and a built-in ad-blocker. It's fantastic.

barrongineer··on Reverse Engineering of a Huawei P20 from China
It's my understanding that he's reverse engineering the Chinese version of the phone rather than the international version.
barrongineer··on Posts on Google
I switched to Bing and have been perfectly happy with it.
barrongineer··on Ask HN: Best alternative to Gmail?
Premium outlook allows you to use a custom domain now. So long as it's registered with GoDaddy.
barrongineer··on Apple, Firefox tools aim to thwart Facebook, Google tracking
I'm not sure about Safari, but the last time I evaluated Firefox(the initial Quantum release), it lacked the ability to inspect websocket frames. Was a dealbreaker for me and I had to go back to Chrome.
barrongineer··on Portable Cloud Programming with Go Cloud
They are trying to promote portability.
barrongineer··on MacBook Pro with faster performance and new features for pros
I'm at the 6 month mark on a 2017 15in and I still dislike it. It's not that its terrible...it's just worse than the function / media keys. Its a step backwards. Perhaps if the touchbar was in addition to the old function row I wouldnt mind it as much.
barrongineer··on MacBook Pro with faster performance and new features for pros
I've no idea why anyone would buy an eGPU where the GPU can't be upgraded.
barrongineer··on Why Crystal Is My Next Language
I dunno, to me it makes perfect sense that you would need to convert it to a duration.

time.Second * time.Duration(userInputInt)

barrongineer··on Huawei, Failing to Crack U.S. Market, Signals a Change in Tactics
I'm really disappointed by this. To my knowledge, the upcoming Matebook X Pro was the only non-Apple device that has a taller than 16x9 aspect ratio and Thunderbolt 3. These are two criteria that are fairly important to me.
barrongineer··on Electron 2.0.0 beta
With Java 9 jigsaw and jlink you can now build fairly light JavaFX apps. The entire jre no longer has to be bundled. Only the pieces you're using.
barrongineer··on Ask HN: What is your Golang web-dev tech stack?
It's fine for an api as well. When you create your app, just use the --api flag and it will leave out all of the front-end stuff.

barrongineer··on Kotlin 1.2 Released: Sharing Code Between Platforms
I find it to be more pragmatic and easier on the eyes. It's easier to learn and also being adopted by more mainstream ecosystems like Spring, Android, Gradle, etc. IDE support is obviously top-notch as well.
barrongineer··on Angular 5.0.0
> Vue is great, but it's lack of proper component support makes it a bit annoying to work with.

Wait...what are you talking about?

barrongineer··on Show HN: See the tech behind any website
Didn't seem to pick up that my site uses Vue.js. It's used sparingly...but still.
barrongineer··on Ask HN: What Go framework for web API are you using in production?
We've been pretty happy with https://gobuffalo.io so far. We're serving up a Vue.js app with it. We needed a single binary to deploy on a client's server with no external dependencies and buffalo fits the bill. It comes with a cli that runs webpack and does hot reloads on save. It also has a build command that will bundle all the assets up to shove in the binary.
