barlo··on TapZilla (YC S10) Offers Daily Deals For Paid Mobile Apps
Interesting. This could be useful.

The developer portion of the site seems kind devoid of hard info: http://tapzilla.com/advertise

The article says it costs the developer $1 per download. Who is actually paying the money that is credited back to the customer? Does the developer need to fund this (in addition to the $1 per download), or does TapZilla?

If TapZilla is funding the customer credit with the developer's $1 per download, can this be used for apps that are more than 99 cents? And how is TapZilla making any money?

If the developer is funding the customer credit, then the developer would need to pay TapZilla $1 + cost for each download? If so, is this prepaid or postpaid?

This is probably because 100% of people who make up statistics don't have a reference, since they made up the statistic.

Nor had I, and now I want it. That's a job well done, marketing-wise.

This sounds very likely. I used one of their graphics prior to their recognition of receiving my contract and they weren't very happy about it.
barlo··on OpenSolaris is dead
Oracle uses NetBeans internally for the development of several applications (mostly from acquisitions), I don't believe you'll see that phased out anytime soon.

barlo··on Has Oracle been a disaster for Sun's open source?
I was simply stating that Oracle already has an Express edition, since you mentioned you thought they were going to turn MySQL into a SQLServer Express-type product. I actually agree with your overall point. It's definitely not in Oracle's favor to improve MySQL or attempt to increase its use. If anything, they will continue to have a free, community edition, of MySQL, and then probably also spin off a commercial version targeted to those that don't need the full power of an Oracle database.

Oracle seems to make a majority of its money in support contracts, not licensing. I think they could do quite well if they released a commercial version of MySQL and sold support for it. (They may already do this, I'm not sure.)

barlo··on Has Oracle been a disaster for Sun's open source?
Just in case you didn't know, Oracle already has an Express version of the Oracle db. It has several limitations (mainly memory and a 5gb storage limit), but it is completely free.

http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/xe/index....

It's currently 10g, but from rumors I've heard, the 11gR2 Express version isn't too far away.

Do you (or anyone else) happen to have any recommendations as far as low-cost SIP providers? I've been looking around lately and I haven't seen any that jumped out.
barlo··on Help, HN. My hard drive failed.
I'm not sure if you're running Windows, but I've had good luck recovering data with R-Studio in the past. I think they have a demo/trial you can use to see if it will be able to recover your data before actually buying it.

I couldn't agree more. Well done. Any plans on releasing the source? I've been looking to play with AppEngine for a project just like this.
barlo··on Ask HN: Any Tips on Disputing Incorrect Credit Information?
You may already know this, but if you're in the US (I assume you are since you mention your SS#), you're entitled to one free credit report per year from each of the major three agencies.

These are obtained through https://www.annualcreditreport.com (not freecreditreport.com)

barlo··on Face.com opens facial recognition API to developers
Who will be the first one to come out with an iPhone app that allows you to take a picture of someone and then automagically find the persons name using facial recognition?

It really seems like a pretty simple idea, especially with an API, which is already attached to Facebook, that does all of the work for you.

The API seems a bit limiting, though. For example, you must specify a list of possible users "you're looking for" in order it to find a match. The only way around this seems to be creating a private namespace that includes your own index of all Facebook users, etc.

barlo··on Hacker News, for iPhone and iPod Touch
I've been using it on and off for the last week or so. It has a nice interface and works pretty well overall. I do wish it had the ability to copy and paste the URL of the articles or allow you to open the links in a browser other than Safari, such as Atomic Web (which can be called using the atomic:// protocol).

And actually on that note, if you haven't tried Atomic Web, I highly recommend it.

barlo··on 47% Of Americans Don't Pay Income Tax, 45% Think The Tax System Is Just Fine
I find it interesting that many of those in the lower income brackets, who pay little to no federal income taxes, think their taxes are too high. A lot of these same people are actually profiting from the credits in the current income tax system.

Strange.

barlo··on New Core i5/i7 MacBook Pros released
Yep, I've used it as my sole development platform for 3 iPhone apps so far. I could never get 10.5 to run perfectly for me, but 10.6 seems to be issue free. (Well, the single issue I've had is Dropbox, for some reason it causes the kernel to crash, but I haven't bothered to look into it at all, yet.)
barlo··on New Core i5/i7 MacBook Pros released
Check out this guide: http://www.ihackintosh.com/2009/12/install-snow-leopard-in-v...

It's all pretty much straight forward, but I found it most stable when I: use the darwin_snow.iso provided as your boot device (it emulates the bootloader used by Macs), use all SCSI devices, and in the config file, set guestOS = "darwin10-64"

The machine I'm running it on now is a i5 750 with 12 gb of mem; I have a single core and 2gb of mem dedicated to the VM. Feel free to email me if you need any help, I spent quite awhile playing with various methods of virtualizing Snow Leopard, so I can probably answer a majority of questions about issues that arise.

edit: As far as VirtualBox, I'm not aware of anyone getting 10.6.2 to run stable in it. I believe 10.4 will run okay. You may want to just use VMWare player, though. Also, you will have issues with the AMD processor, Apple was 'thoughtful' enough to include code to ensure Mac OS will only run on Intel processors. There are several distributions of 10.5 that have been modified to run on AMD processors, but I haven't really played with them - I think google can assist there, though.

barlo··on New Core i5/i7 MacBook Pros released
You may want to consider running Snow Leopard inside of VMWare , especially if you already have a decent machine to use for virtualization. I've been running 10.6.2 for several months in VMWare on a Windows 7 host with absolutely zero issues.

barlo··on Engadget: iPad app prices are out of control and will kill us all
Have you seen the article about the game that was initially launched at 99c and then progressively increased to $350? It's really the best example I've seen about how bad the pricing in the AppStore has really become.

I'm not sure that this is the original source, but its Google's first result: http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/27628/GDC_Refenes__Saltsm...

barlo··on Engadget: iPad app prices are out of control and will kill us all
For some reason, many people tend to greatly undervalue their time and effort.

I have a couple of apps in the AppStore. All of the apps that I've made were initially solely intended for my use, but I usually end up throwing them on the AppStore, mostly for the fun of it.

One of them is a extremely simple app I literally put together in about four hours; when I put it on the AppStore I priced it at 99 cents just to see what would happen. Surprisingly (for such a simple app), I was getting a steady 5-10 sales a day. A couple of weeks later, I jacked the price up to $3.99 just to see what would happen. For the first week at $3.99, I actually had between 15-20 sales a day. Since then, my sales have never dropped below 8 sales per day.

By increasing my price, I actually had a net increase in both quantity sold and revenue.

As with most products, higher priced goods are perceived as having more value than their lower-priced counterparts - even in the AppStore.

barlo··on iPad wifi connectivity problems
Are you talking about the solder for the cap they mistakenly melted?

"Dont worry, the capacitor near the lower right corner of the Broadcom chip didn't come that way. The solder melted and it moved when we heated the steel casing to remove it."
