barkerja··on I created Perfect Wiki and reached $250k in annual revenue without investors
If you're in a company with a very top-down model/mentality, Teams is fine. Your comms are mostly in small groups or DMs, which Teams seems to really push users towards.

The whole channel experience is horrible and really degrades any attempt at having open communications in a company.

However, if you are a "flat" company that does everything in the open, Teams is going to work against you; this is one of the qualities that makes Slack great. Its whole approach pushes more things out into the open for more collaboration.

barkerja··on Google is illegally monopolizing online advertising tech, judge rules
Source? I don't see any mention of that here: https://help.kagi.com/kagi/search-details/search-sources.htm...
barkerja··on Google is illegally monopolizing online advertising tech, judge rules
I use Kagi ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
barkerja··on MLB says Yankees' new "torpedo bats" are legal and likely coming
Yes, because home runs still are not that regular of an occurrence. So they're still "special".

But if they become a lot more commonplace, then the allure will depreciate over time.

barkerja··on Apple says it will add 20k jobs, spend $500B, produce AI servers in US
That's not necessarily news, unless I am missing something. Craig made an indirect mention of this during last year's WWDC regarding the private cloud compute.

barkerja··on DOGE has 'god mode' access to government data
Your position is any citizen should be able to access the private information of any other citizen? Because that is in essence what "wiretapping the Federal government" would lead to.

Personal privacy aside, how are secrets imperative to national security protected if you allow full audits by any American citizen?

barkerja··on DOGE has 'god mode' access to government data
Therein lies the problem: it's not a government agency, at least not without Congressional approval.
barkerja··on An ad giant wants to control your next TV's OS
If you didn't accept the EULA, does it render the entire TV inoperable? Or just the "smart" features?
barkerja··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Theoretically, if changes were put into place to allow a run for a third term (which is highly unlikely given age), then that also opens the door for someone like Obama running again.
barkerja··on FIDO Alliance publishes new spec to let users move passkeys across providers
No, this is not guaranteed.
barkerja··on FIDO Alliance publishes new spec to let users move passkeys across providers
> Android 14 seems to allow changing the passkey provider in the android system as well

It's worth noting this is also supported in iOS and macOS.

barkerja··on Show HN: I built a Iridium/LTE satellite GPS tracker and took it to the Arctic
The opposite. Op would have preferred to work at Iridium, if only they offered higher pay compared to where they are currently.
barkerja··on Show HN: PostalAgent – Send Postcards online by circling areas on a Google Map
Are you using anything like Mapbox?
barkerja··on Californians can now add their mobile driver's license to Google Wallet
Apple's approach with Wallet is to allow the transmission of (selective) ID data without fully unlocking your phone. I believe it's the same as when you tap to pay using a credit card in your wallet. You must provide passcode/biometrics when requested, but that does not unlock your device.
barkerja··on Apple to update EU browser options, make more apps deletable
In the EU, different engines are allowed. If that's what you mean. There is an entitlement specifically for that, see: https://developer.apple.com/support/alternative-browser-engi...
barkerja··on Apple Pushes Ahead with Tabletop Home Device in Shift to Robotics
I have a Vision Pro, and have tried it in the kitchen. It's too cumbersome and too visually distorting.

Speaking for myself, I don't need something that follows me all over the kitchen, just something that adjusts to my movements in a somewhat confined space. Center Stage already does this fairly well when FaceTiming.

barkerja··on Apple Pushes Ahead with Tabletop Home Device in Shift to Robotics
> Where would a robot arm with an iPad on the end be a better solution than Vision Pro?

On my kitchen counter, where I currently have an iPad Pro that is stationary and I wish nearly every day it would follow me as I move about the kitchen whilst cooking.

barkerja··on Hackers may have leaked the Social Security Numbers of every American
What service are you using that provides a single "switch" for all 3 agencies?
barkerja··on On Front Porch Forum, politics is fair game but unkindness is prohibited
What sets this apart from Nextdoor?
barkerja··on Twitter kills its San Francisco headquarters, will relocate to South Bay
It appears they're trying to change the platform to be more of a media and payments platform. That requires talent.
barkerja··on Building a Local Perplexity Alternative with Perplexica, Ollama, and SearXNG
I do use it, because it's replaced the search engine and ChatGPT/Claude for me. It's an all-in-one service that delivers a generally great experience. Both its web and mobile apps are excellent, and they provide an OpenAI -compatible API that lets me do work against their supported models.
barkerja··on Building a Local Perplexity Alternative with Perplexica, Ollama, and SearXNG
That sounds cumbersome. And if that's your workflow, wouldn't a service like perplexity be a better fit for you?
barkerja··on Building a Local Perplexity Alternative with Perplexica, Ollama, and SearXNG
I've never seen it, but I don't think they support Safari, for whatever reason.
barkerja··on Building a Local Perplexity Alternative with Perplexica, Ollama, and SearXNG
The article is not correct. Perplexity has its own crawler and crawls sites directly.

The nice thing about Perplexity is its source annotation. It will show you in real time how it's arriving at its data capture(s), and then annotate the results accordingly.

It really is a lovely service. It has replaced the "normal" search engine for me, for most of my queries. And has completely replaced ChatGPT/Claude as it can fulfill those needs directly (and even let me choose to use one of those models).

They also have an OpenAI-compatible API. I use it in conjunction with https://github.com/thmsmlr/instructor_ex

barkerja··on Wild new Wi-Fi routers turn your home network into a security radar
I've wanted an applicable use of something like this from UWB (UltraWide Band). Apple is really well-positioned for this, but nothing has yet come to fruition.

If devices like HomePods — or ideally, something much more affordable — placed around your home can begin to triangulate you based on a wearable (phone, watch, tag on a collar, etc.), then some really cool possibilities become imaginable.

barkerja··on A look at Apple's technical approach to AI including core model performance etc.
> The whole thing comes down to - your request may get sent to ChatGPT for advanced features.

If that was your takeaway from the keynote/SOTU, then I would suggest you go back and watch it again. That's not even remotely close to being accurate.

barkerja··on Apple Intelligence for iPhone, iPad, and Mac
My understanding is that Apple's approach to this integration is adaptable; much like how you would change your browser's search engine, you'll be able to change which external AI model is utilized. ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, etc.
barkerja··on Stop Using Discord
> Out of curiosity, is any of that useful information on the Elixir Discord available to be searched for with Google or any other search engine?

It is not, and that is the one major knock against Discord. But see my response above about that.

barkerja··on Stop Using Discord
> On conventional forums on the other hand, I have learned so much from reading threads from the past.

I agree, this is a great value. I don't argue against forums, they need to exist.

I was just pointing out that Discord, in my experience, has not been a place of disdain like the original post claims.

Discord has done a lot of work to help foster a good community for all types, especially for the software development communities. If you haven't yet experienced Discord's forum feature, it's worth at least exploring. Here's an example from the Elixir community: https://share.barkerja.dev/4o8Ozk.png

If Discord ever did decide to make this content SEO, what then becomes the major point _against_ something like Discord and your traditional forum?

barkerja··on Stop Using Discord
I use Discord quite a bit in the Elixir community and find it quite useful. Messages are persisted. There's a wonderful forum feature now built into the platform; and it's all searchable with a pretty robust filtering mechanism.

And with an active server, there's typically always someone around to help you chat through a problem almost immediately.

I understand the sentiment, but it does seem misinformed.

Slack, on the other hand. Absolutely! Stay away for anything related to knowledge-base.
