barista··on The limits of Google’s openness
No wonder Google is pissed about that
barista··on The limits of Google’s openness
>It seems Google will allow them to build an HTML5 app

Isn't it more like Google is forcing them to write an HTML5 app by refusing to allow native app?

barista··on Push Notifications to Mobile Devices Using Amazon SNS
Anybody know what the comparable Azure service costs?
barista··on Push Notifications to Mobile Devices Using Amazon SNS
Windows phone has the app independent way of doing messaging in their messaging hub. Quite useful.
barista··on Push Notifications to Mobile Devices Using Amazon SNS
Looks like Azure introduced their own version the same day. http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2013/08/12/windows-az...
barista··on Google Latitude retired
What if I as a user don't want it? Why force me to get it?
barista··on Amazon's profits
Those are some good links. Thanks. He's very savvy guy. Interesting how he chose to conclude the interview which was very clearly targeted towards the "investors" of Amazon as this:

"And the reason that I'm doing this interview with you is I want customers to understand what makes us tick, how we operate, what our principles are. I think customers want to know who they're doing business with."

smart!

barista··on Russia's Massive Android Malware Industry Revealed
what makes this scary is this line:

"The report found the bulk of this Russian malware wasn't coming from lone individuals in basements, but well-oiled malware producing machines."

barista··on Microsoft's Surface sales figures are in, and they're hideous
iPad sales in a year were close to 7 million http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-ipad-estimat.... RT has sold close to 2 million in a year.
barista··on Microsoft's Surface sales figures are in, and they're hideous
They priced it competitively with the product they were fighting. But now its prices way less than iPad. iPad - $500 Surface RT - $350
barista··on Microsoft's Surface sales figures are in, and they're hideous
regarding comparison with iPad, the CPU GPU combination does not matter because Surface was/is still plenty fast with the hardware it has. Agree on the screen and Office though. Although office was updated a month or two after the release and fixed the performance issues in time. I wouldn't necessarily attribute the problems to that. Marketing seems to have come around and have started chaning the message and attacking the iPad more directly in adverts like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86JMcy5OqZA and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wE7AQY5Xk9w

plus the reduced price should help make it attractive. It's one very functional device though. Just today I read an article of how it was perfect for a student. Will update with a link if I find it.

barista··on An open letter to Jeff Bezos: A contract worker’s take on Amazon.com
Given the razor thin margins that Amazon runs with, I am not surprised. This is a company that is struggling to make any money even after people bought hundreds of Billions of dollars worth of stuff from them. They are bound to cut corners to stay alive.
barista··on Google Chromecast
What this is is another proprietary technology that Google has chosen to adopt over open standards such as WFD and Miracast. After tuning off support for jabber, deprioritizing rss, yet another step in that direction from a company that touts open standards for its own benefits. Shame!
barista··on Google Launches The Chromecast To Bring Chrome To The Living Room
With many TVs with built in youtube support and many other devices already connected to the TVs that have you tube, xbox, PCs, PS4, Wii, Roku, etc. Why would you buy it? Just so that I don't have to search what I am watching on my phone on my TV again? For the price this might still be worth enough to spend for that feature. But just trying to understand if there is anything else there is to it.
barista··on Google Launches The Chromecast To Bring Chrome To The Living Room
So this only works with browser? Can other apps stream to it as well?
barista··on Microsoft calls for transparency over security requests
Exactly the press seems to be overly happy to bash MS for this when pretty much every online property has complied with such requests.
barista··on Microsoft: U.S. Constitution is 'suffering' from NSA secrecy
I am surprised that Microsoft took as much flak for it as it did when pretty much every other online property including Google and Facebook has complied with these demand (as they are legally supposed to do). Besides it is also interesting to note that providers such as Google and Facebook probably have a lot more interesting data that the government is likely interested in. It is more likely that data from the likes of Google and Facebook that can be used to track an individual or can be detrimental to them as compared to the data that Microsoft has.

barista··on Elop explains: why Nokia didn't choose Android to replace Symbian
Open platform? BS! Google has milked the term to its benefit. There have been many discussions here that question the openness of android.
barista··on Elop explains: why Nokia didn't choose Android to replace Symbian
It was quite obvious even a couple of years ago that Samsung will basically dominate Android to the extent that android == Samsung given the market share. The whole open platform is a façade that Google has created.

One question, Why?

second that. If you are saying that after using Windows Phone then I respect it but I won't write off windows phone without giving it a shot. Take this from someone who has tried iPhone for a year before moving to Windows Phone.

You can always turn that speed warning off if it bothers you.

The "Windows Phone lacks apps" meme is getting old very quickly. But then again there is a grain of truth there. Most applications that you use day in and day out are probably already there natively or as a very good clone. The part that might hurt you is when the next hot application comes along it is likely that a native or clone for Windows Phone may not exist right away and you might have to wait for a few weeks to get it. Android also has this problem to some extent. If you are always chasing the new hot apps on your iPhone then you might stick to iPhones a bit longer until app makers warm up to Windows ecosystem.

That is definitely a thing that you don't appreciate until you have to use it. We were on road over the long weekend and were lost with no network connection. Thanks to offline maps on my Lumia 920 I was able to find the nearest road offline and get back on road to our destination.
