Where is “here”?
barfingclouds··on US strikes $1.2B deal to pay German firm to halt offshore wind projects
Offshore wind can power the data center too. Your dichotomy is not relevant
barfingclouds··on SpaceX, Other Mega IPOs Denied Fast Index Entry by S&P
Thank god
barfingclouds··on Gemini 3.1 Pro
I’m no tech expert like a lot of people here, but I find Gemini 3.0 insanely good for my regular daily questions. Hoping this one is great too. I’m kind of at the point where many answers are essentially perfect and I don’t know if I need much more
barfingclouds··on Gemini 2.5 Flash
I just need the Gemini app to allow push to talk :( Otherwise it’s not usable for me in the way I want it to be
barfingclouds··on How each pillar of the First Amendment is under attack
The left has been authoritarian. Rewind the clock to 2018, and speak your mind freely on a college campus and at some point you’ll say something that makes you lose your job. That’s one of many examples of the left being actually authoritarian.

I’m not saying two wrongs make a right and I’m not justifying the current administration. But if we look to how we got here, that’s a lot of why, if not mostly why.

barfingclouds··on Claude can now search the web
Yeah I have to manually hold it down every time I talk. I have a lot of pauses and simply would not be able to interface with that without that option. It’s why I essentially can’t use Gemini voice mode
barfingclouds··on GPT-4.5
There’s a grok app for iPhone that’s basically the same as ChatGPT/deepseek/mistral/gemini/claude
barfingclouds··on California bill would require bots to disclose that they are bots
Yes please
barfingclouds··on TikTok preparing for U.S. shut-off on Sunday
Yeah it’s about that algorithms could radicalize the population or turn them against each other
barfingclouds··on More men are addicted to the 'crack cocaine' of the stock market
Yep this is the craziest part. The answer has been known for a long time. S&P500. Literally that simple
barfingclouds··on FTC bans hidden junk fees in hotel, event ticket prices
Nice I might do this method too
barfingclouds··on Gukesh becomes the youngest chess world champion in history
So that’s it for Magnus Carlson’s perfect streak?
barfingclouds··on Car tires shed a quarter of all microplastics in the environment
As someone who lived in LA, the air quality is usually moderate or above, like all the time. I consider that not good
barfingclouds··on California's most neglected group of students: the gifted ones
I’m from Oregon suburbs right by Intel’s largest campus. I went to all public schools and I was really fortunate that for the most part I was able to intellectually explore and take advanced classes. I took full courseloads in high school instead of having empty periods like most of my peers. I entered college as a a junior credit wise. What I read about California often horrifies me
barfingclouds··on Starlink Direct to Cell
Well competitors are going to have to use SpaceX rockets to get their satellites up. So no matter what SpaceX is winning
barfingclouds··on Undergraduates with family income below $200k will be tuition-free at MIT
Very much this
barfingclouds··on Maybe Bluesky has "won"
I have bluesky and mastodon accounts and I’m always surprised at how people extreme people call them. I have them just as my music/photography accounts. So the people I add are doing the same stuff. My feed is just as extreme as Flickr aka zero extremeness. Just pictures of bridges and music and normal thoughts.
barfingclouds··on ChatGPT Search
Perplexity has already been doing this for a long time and it’s pretty excellent. I use it daily
barfingclouds··on New Mac Mini with M4
I bought a portable AC battery for my Mac mini for $65. Hard agree though that it would be a lot cooler if the conversion was in the cable so I could just do dc in.

The thing is, M chips run so efficiently that even with the power loss from conversion, it’s still pulling less power than a lot of PCs.

But yeah it running on a sleek dc battery would be a lot cooler

barfingclouds··on New Mac Mini with M4
If I’m someone who does not super high intensity photo and video work, is a usb 3.2 gen 2 aka ~1 GB/s speeds fine in a hard drive?
barfingclouds··on New Mac Mini with M4
I got the Mac mini m1 as my first Apple computer recently (used). It’s really cool. It never heats up ever
barfingclouds··on Jeff Bezos killed Washington Post endorsement of Kamala Harris
Weird, because in Trump’s last presidency he was pretty anti Jeff Bezos. But I guess however they feel about each other, the assumed business tax benefits of a trump presidency make him want trump
barfingclouds··on AI PCs Aren't Good at AI: The CPU Beats the NPU
Agreed. I use perplexity and chat gpt daily, but if I understand correctly that’s all done off device which is fine with me. I don’t need to generate weird images, or have my phone rewrite emails for me, or summarize stuff.
barfingclouds··on Patent troll Sable pays up, dedicates all its patents to the public
I think companies small and large should pay for an insurance that will obliterate patent trolls with legal fees. They often win by bullying individual small companies. But if there’s a collective response then maybe they can’t get so far?
barfingclouds··on SpaceX launches mission for 2 NASA astronauts who are stuck on the ISS
I’ve never heard of those people
barfingclouds··on macOS Sequoia is available today
Upon getting sequoia it asked if I wanted their new windows tiling or rectangle’s. Rectangle has been good to me, so I stuck with it
barfingclouds··on iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max
Yeah that’s how I feel. I feel like the iPhone 7 could handle all the daily use cases just fine. Every phone after is cool but doesn’t accomplish anything
barfingclouds··on Prevention of HIV
I think this study was just young African women in a high incidence area. They basically picked the most likely place in the world a person would get it
barfingclouds··on Prevention of HIV
They did this study in a high risk group, so that rate of infection was expected
