barclay··on An HTML5 app turned native in 10 minutes with PhoneGap Build?
> i agree that Google suck at developer tools and docs, absolutely (...) a lot of their tools I consider 'unshippable' they are so bug riddled and unusable

This absolutely mystifies me. Especially after coming in from the iOS development stack, the android sdk's, simulator, et al, are shockingly bad. And it's been YEARS now.

barclay··on OS X: About Mail Update for Mavericks
Nice idea (and having written an IMAP service, ugh, the spec is so bad...) But, remember: they have zero incentive for you to use a mail client. They WANT you use the web client, so they can sell you for advertising.
barclay··on Square open-sources its Vim repo, Maximum Awesome
This. I still do not understand why the OSX terminal is so damned slow.
barclay··on Bad as Shit
"Never let the truth stand in the way of a good story..."
barclay··on A New Look for Facebook
Sure, it does. But they're also overwhelmingly crappy for most "normal" folks: pixelated, blurry, poorly cropped.
barclay··on Achievement Unlocked
But that's looking at the big picture... something that clearly, the powers that be at big companies no longer do.
barclay··on Github Ruby Styleguide
Yes(!) Goddamn you kids and your Xcode.

Now get off my damned lawn.

barclay··on Instagram Photos Will No Longer Appear In Twitter Streams At All
Exactly. It'd be one thing if instagram was a popular independent service. But they're not. Let's not forget who their big brother is, peering over their shoulder.
barclay··on First clear evidence that dogs do not naturally distinguish objects by shape
Oooh. That would be a good test. Similar to the above comment, our guy has a number of toys and can distinguish by name. Totally going to the pet store this weekend to see if we can try that out.
barclay··on Trailer for Bravo's Start-Ups: Silicon Valley
I was squatting in the office hermine and her crew were in while some of this was filming, and it was absolutely fascinating to peer over the shoulder of the director and P/A's, and see just how much of this was scripted and the various re-takes and whatnot.

You always have this feeling about "reality TV" that it's fake, but it was rather eye opening to see it firsthand.

barclay··on Daring Fireball: App.net
Jesus. I hadn't realized it's $50 to sign up. May be awesome, but that's a high price to experiment with.
barclay··on Show HN: Collections, a fast multiple-account Google Docs client for Mac
Hmm. Dunno if it was syncing, or what, but it just sat there consuming CPU (170% across both cores) for a while. Finally killed it.
barclay··on Sergey Brin Demos Google Glass At I/O
These ones? No. These are ridiculous, (really) ugly, and pretty limited.

But make no mistake, this is absolutely the future.

barclay··on Don't wait for "DOM ready" for your app to start
> better to solve that problem than piss around with a half built page in my experience.

Seconded. This can cause far more bugs and timing problems than it's worth. Find out what's taking so long to fire, and fix (or defer) that.

barclay··on The Critical Security Flaws that Resulted in Last Friday's Hack
Make kevin cringe less by calling him a "graphic designer". That extra "s" makes them die inside. :)

Also, nice job, kevin.

barclay··on AT&T chief regrets offering unlimited data for iPhone
Didn't the 300 from sprint come with a bunch of crap apps (i.e. NFL mobile or whatever) installed on it?

I also had a Treo 300 (and a 180, a 600, and 750p)--so I maybe be confusing this with one of the later ones. The apps were easy enough to delete, IIRC, but there were some on there. And, as all crap apps, they were completely useless.

That said, sprint did offer unlimited data (and text) for far less than AT&T. I'm still bitter about that.

barclay··on Reddit takes a new direction
Youtube handles it via whack-a-mole. A friend of mine used to work in their community dept, and would tell horror stories about the things she'd see people put up.
barclay··on Most Popular jQuery Plugins of January 2012
Wow. This is pretty weak. Then again, they're the "most popular plugins of 1 month". Seems pretty faddish to me.
barclay··on Stripe blog: New webhooks
You guys seriously kick ass.
barclay··on $150K and up for Software Devs in Austin
> The weather is pretty much the only reason I don't regret moving here

You nailed it: we're paying for the weather.

It's December 11th, and we're still able to be outside. Yesterday I did a 80k bike ride and it was perfect out. Even at it's worst (Feb) it's still quite tolerable. Every time I think about moving to the east coast, I remember the ice and snow of the winters, and am quite happy to stay here.

Also, we're geographically ideal. Want to get into the hills? take a drive down 1 or skyline, and it's gorgeous. We have ocean access. Napa and Sonoma are an hour north. Skiing and the mountains are only a couple hours east.

It's far more than just san fransico proper.

barclay··on Arrington out at AOL (for real this time)
I'm glad I'm not the only skeptic. Something about this whole thing feels a little too contrived and over the top to me.
barclay··on Chocolat - the new editor
I love me some textmate, but the lack of split window editing makes me sad, every time I start really working in it.
barclay··on Fab.com does $1.3mm revenue in first 30 days
> I must say, since I was expecting things like plastic injection, aluminum milling, and circuit board construction

Must be the HN demographic. I thought the same thing, too.

barclay··on Y Combinator Partner Harj Taggar: "San Francisco is Becoming Silicon Valley"
The only hitch in that is caltrain stops running at midnight. Even if you're not out partying, but just having a later dinner, you always have to keep an eye on the time, and make sure you're in the cab (muni, etc) before 11:30 to get on that last train of the night.
barclay··on The most dangerous car in America is...
Couldn't agree more, and mine was "Le Mans Sunset".

How could people consistently miss a bright orange car in their mirrors?

barclay··on What do you want to know about a company to work there?
> Picture/video of the team together outside the office

I'm surprised at how much I like this idea. We're starting to see it more and more, and it really can give you a glimpse into the culture.

There's a level of authenticity that it needs though. Anything too shiny or produced looks it, and immediately raises my bullshit meter.

barclay··on Sometimes it pays to pay your web designer
Agreed. Just turn them off. Especially if you're also handling their email. That will get their attention far quicker, and more professionally.
barclay··on I Can Haz $$$: The Cheezburger Network Scores $30 Million in Funding
I personally find this absolutely bewildering. I like cat pictures as much as the next guy... but $30 million? That makes them, what a $300 mil valuation? For funny pictures of cats?

No, really, what bubble.

barclay··on Cork'd to Shut Down
Nah. It's just a rails site. Some interesting stuff but most of it pretty straight forward.
barclay··on Subtraction.com: Blu-Ray Blues
> Also no one is streaming 5.1 surround sound yet either.

While NF streaming is great, this is one thing that it's really missing.
